Phil’s Faves: Songs, July 1, 2012

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Just like the banjo, the pontoon is getting the most beautiful attention that it has gotten in a long, long time. Little Big Town breathes new life into what was considered senior citizen territory for a second week at the top! But beware. Almost every other song on this list has the potential to sink the pontoon……………..

Top Ten Songs for the Week of July 1, 2012

1. Pontoon—Little Big Town
2. Angel Eyes—Love and Theft
3. Sunglasses—Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights
4. Wild Weekend—Tinsley Ellis & The Heartfixers
5. Never Go Back—Grace Potter & the Nocturnals
6. Give Your Heart a Break—Demi Lovato
7. The Doors Sing “Reading Rainbow”—Jimmy Fallon
8. Banjo—Rascal Flatts
9. The Sun Is Shining—The Fireman (Paul McCartney)
10. Summertime—Jessica Dayle

1) “Pontoon”—So far this summer, the best spot to be is floating around on a pontoon. Little Big Town provides the perfect experience!
2) “Angel Eyes”—I like this Love and Theft song much better than the video. I feel that that feeling carries over to the video. So what?!
3) “Sunglasses”—Another perfect Joanie Leeds and The Nightlights summer song that translates well to younger and older!
4) “Wild Weekend”—Summer feelings continue on this Tinsley Ellis & The Heartfixers classic cover!
5) “Never Go Back”Grace Potter and The Nocturnals return to form on this worthy attempt!
6) “Give Your Heart a Break”—This oh-so-catchy Demi Lovato song is starting to drive me crazy!
7) “The Doors Sing ‘Reading Rainbow'”—Sometimes things that are done in one media don’t always translate well to other forms of media. This Jimmy Fallon visual extravaganza as well as others on his new “Blow Your Pants Off” album does not have that problem. This song is true classic The Doors in their prime!
8) “Banjo”Rascal Flatts are probably saying goodbye this week……………….
9) “The Sun Is Shining”Paul McCartney released this song as a side project that he called The Fireman. I dug it out after hearing him play a song from it at Comerica Park in Detroit last year. It has since continued to get under my skin from time to time. The extremely warm summer this year has caused it to sprout onto one of my faves lists!
10) “Summertime”—This Jessica Dayle country/folk tune is one of the most pleasant surprises that I’ve run across this year! This young blond aspiring singer/songwriter hails from British Columbia and Alberta—an area that you think wouldn’t have much to say about summertime. You would be way wrong! This song has so many interesting hooks in it that I don’t want to write about them all at one time. All I will tell you for now is that I can almost smell the cocoa butter sunscreen that she describes in the song! I don’t know, but I may be rethinking that favorite song of summer. Awesome job, Jessica!
