Phil’s Faves:Songs, July 8, 2012

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

The pontoon took on some water. Little Big Town bailed out enough to keep it afloat at #4. Torpedoed by some very powerful “Angel Eyes”…………………..

Top Ten Songs for the Week of July 8, 2012

1. Angel Eyes—Love and Theft
2. The Doors Sing “Reading Rainbow”— Jimmy Fallon
3. Sunglasses—Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights
4. Pontoon—Little Big Town
5. Summertime—Jessica Dayle
6. Never Go Back—Grace Potter & the Nocturnals
7. Wild Weekend—Tinsley Ellis & The Heartfixers
8. Give Your Heart a Break—Demi Lovato
9. The Sun Is Shining—The Fireman (Paul McCartney)
10. Witchi Tao To—Everything Is Everything

1) “Angel Eyes”—The chorus on this song is so good and catchy! The harmony is so tight! I am now a fan!
2) “The Doors Sing ‘Reading Rainbow’”—Look, I’ve listened to Jimmy Fallon after Jim Morrison and I have to say that Fallon’s imitation might actually be better! What am I saying!!!??? I think I’ll go lie down now…but “Reading Rainbow” is phenomenal!
3) “Sunglasses”—Every time I reach for my sunglasses I think of this Joanie Leeds song!
4) “Pontoon”—You probably never will hear a more sexy song about a pontoon, but I think its control on this list may be over..
5) “Summertime”—My feelings for this Jessica Dayle song keep getting stronger! “Summertime” has a relaxed country/folk feel to it and I really like the way the tempo of the song speeds up and slows down as if a gentle, warm, breeze rises up to occasionally move it along! You have to check this song out! Watch out everyone else at the top of the list!
6) “Never Go Back”—I don’t know why, but this song reminds me of The Motels’ “Suddenly Last Summer.” It might be the tempo. Either way, I like this song way better than that one!
7) “Wild Weekend”—I’m still not tired of this song and I’m not sure if I ever will!
8) “Give Your Heart a Break”—OK. Demi Lovato’s song is starting to get a little old for me. Still good, but fading a little……………….
9) “The Sun Is Shining”—I really like the subtle hooks on this Paul McCartney song! Things just seem to weave in and out effortlessly!
10) “Witchi Tao To”—I have no idea who Everything Is Everything are (What did I just say??), but for some reason this song, which I hadn’t heard in years, worked its way from my subconscious to my conscious and I had to hear it again!!! It’s mostly a Native American chant to a water spirit. There’s a nice subdued sax solo on it. The bass is pulsing and when combined with the words is very hypnotic. I really like this song and wish more things like it would come along!
