One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Show Me a Brick Wall” by Lindsay Lou and The Flatbellys!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

It will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

My radio show, “Prime Time Theme Attic,”  is on Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET but is on hiatus because of the pandemic.

Here’s the link for when the show returns: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu )

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

On days that I spotlight a greatest song, it will take the place of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey…at least sometimes!

I had forgotten about this song: “Show Me a Brick Wall” by Lindsay Lou and The Flatbellys.

I was reminded of it when I caught Philby Award winners,  The Sweet Water Warblers, a super group of of women artists: May Erlewine, Racheal Davis, and Lindsay Lou!

They were at The Magic Bag in Ferndale, and I think it was the last show I experienced before the pandemic hit.

It absolutely was going to be one of the best shows, if not the best, I would see this year, in a very active music calendar of really great shows up to that point!

Well, The Warblers rolled the song out and it sounded so fresh and awesome with their perfect three part harmonies!

“Dang!” I said, both to myself and to no one in particular!

So the question that needs to be asked and answered is, “How can somebody ever forget about One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded?”

I can think of a couple of reasons.

One is that multiple Philby Award winners Lindsay Lou and The Flatbellys have plenty of great songs that I was into at that time!

I have been playing them on my show since I started. They were also the first group that I ever wanted on my show!

(They worked it out and it was a blast!)

The other reason, if I remember correctly, is that I think it was a bonus track on the band’s Ionia” album. It kinda got lost in the shuffle of music I listen to.

“Brick Wall” is a cover of a Carl Smith song.

Lindsay Lou’s vocal is as beautiful as she looks in the video!

Joshua Rilko, plays a sweet mandolin solo!

PJ George III anchors the song with his acoustic bass!

And Mark Lavengood (“Huggybear’) smacks it all in line on the cajon!

Harmonies and dynamics are tight!

And for a bluegrass/Americana band, they lay down a pretty funky groove! (Funkgrass?)

I LOVE this song (and video)!!
