One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “I’ll Be There” by Gerry and The Pacemakers!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 1PM-4PM ET.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Here’s a link to have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”: https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

It’s been one year since Gerry Marsden, lead singer of Gerry and The Pacemakers sadly passed away.

Many people like to choose one of their bigger hits to remember him by.

But I’ve noticed, from all of the songs that people post about the death of Gerry Marsden of the British Invasion band, Gerry and The Pacemakers, I usually don’t see my favorite song of theirs.

He may have been vertically challenged, but the stature of his music and hits stood tall!

Gerry and The Pacemakers had a similar Liverpool heritage that produced The Beatles.

They were even part of the roster of artists that Beatles manager Brian Epstein [Hall of Fame] managed.

I certainly liked them as they rolled out several hits in the 60s.

Gerry always came across as a very likeable guy!

I liked the unique way that he played his guitar, often smiling as he did so.

The song I’m stuck on, though, is a song that even I’d forgotten about years ago.

And it was a Top 15 hit!

It wasn’t until I heard it on Honey Radio that I realized how great it was!

“I’ll Be There” is a bittersweet song, written by Bobby Darin, about a lover holding a torch for his girlfriend who is moving on to a new relationship.

Gerry Marsden nails the vocal!: the intricate triplets on the “I’ll”s, the range of notes, the power in the middle eight, and the yearning for his soulmate!

“I’ll Be There” also has One of the Greatest String Arrangements!

The melody is hauntingly beautiful, and the piano on the instrumental section is heart tugging!

“So if your new love/
Isn’t your true love/
Don’t you worry darlin’/
I’ll be there.”

I truly believe he would be!
