One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “The Blob” by The Five Blobs!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 1PM-4PM ET.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Here’s a link to have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”: https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

One of the first group of songs that I wrote about in my blog was my favorite 13 Halloween Hauntings!

The posts are long in need of an upgrade.

They also deserve more attention!

Here’s my attempt to do both!

I really didn’t remember hearing this Halloween song as part of “The Blob” movie. I stumbled upon it as part of a Rhino Records collection. After listening to it for several years, I became aware of the song’s musical “royal lineage!”

“The Blob Theme Song” is a mostly instrumental one with a pretty awesome saxophone solo—and I am not even a big sax fan! I usually only like it when it’s right, and it’s right in a big way on this song!

It starts out with a nice acoustic guitar riff that pops up again later in the song. Then the sax and the rest of the band falls in, including a group of male singers who get to sing about such exciting things as a “splotch” and a “blotch.” The song has a kind of “Tequila” by The Champs feel to it, with an occasional break to tell you to “Beware of the Blob!”

The song also includes “pops” done before every chorus. The type of pop I’m describing is the kind where you put your finger in your mouth and pull it out to make that noise.

Many years ago, I saw Burt Bacharach [Hall of Fame] in concert, and he took great pleasure in making that sound—and he should have because he and Mack David (not Hal David) wrote the song! It was his first hit!

Hard to believe, huh! The guy who gave us great romantic songs like “(They Long to Be) Close To You” and such huge anthems as “What the World Needs Now” started out writing the ending credit song for “The Blob” (the one with Steve McQueen)! No one could have imagined Burt Bacharach would give the world such great music!

“The Blob Theme Song” usually makes me laugh if I haven’t heard it in a while, and it certainly wouldn’t be Halloween to me without it!
