One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Our Winter Love” by The Lettermen/Bill Pursell!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Here’s a link to have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”: https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

I’ve been meaning to post  “Our Winter Love” for quite a while, but the weather needed to be just right: it had to be snowing!

The problem, though, is that every time I’m ready to do it, I’m too busy clearing snow!

At this point, this is my sixth update over the past year.

In my personal music history, I’ve probably been aware of The Lettermen for the same amount of time as The Beatles, thanks to an older sister. I’m fairly certain that she had all of their albums while we shared the same house.

However, I couldn’t stand The Lettermen!

They were dull and boring!

And I got to hear them a lot thanks to my sister.

What confused me as a non worldly child, was that The Lettermen were on the same label as………..The Beatles!!!!?????

How could that be?

Why would Capitol Records want both The Lettermen AND The Beatles?

Fortunately the record company had the good sense to have both groups on their roster. I mean, as a little kid, even I was aware that The Lettermen harmonies were exquisitely beautiful!

Possibly even better than The Beatles. (Did I just say that?)

Well, to avoid an argument, I’ll just say that both are superb!

And I’ve had enough musical knowledge for years to know that The Lettermen killed it on their best songs!

“Our Winter Love” started as an instrumental 1963 hit for Bill Pursell, who sadly passed away a few years ago.

In 1966, Bob Tubert added some lyrics to the song, and it became a minor hit for The Lettermen, too!

I like listening to either one, but nothing can beat hearing Bill Pursell’s downward plimk-plink-plink on the piano as the snow falls!

I’ve included both versions!
