On the eve of the Philby Hot 100 Songs of 2016, I am busily working on the Philby Best Albums of 2016. I have been doing so since Thanksgiving. I calculate that I have listened to upwards of 2500 albums this year—and that is a conservative figure. I listened to 10 today without even trying.
Out of the 2500 or so, I had a running list of potential albums that reached 449. From those, I made a master list of 130. I know I can easily make a list of 200, but I like the idea, at this point, of keeping it at 100 because I can play a song from all of the artists on my shows, and make it a “living list.” A larger list, at the moment, makes it too cumbersome. At least for this year, anyway.
The list swelled again to 142 as I added some albums that I had forgotten. THAT IS THE HARDEST PART OF THIS LIST! No wait. Actually, putting the albums in order is THE HARDEST PART OF THE LIST! So it starts next week. I hate it…and I love it! Recognizing such incredible music and artists is always motivating. But I am deathly afraid that I will forget someone I wanted to reward!
