Phil’s Faves: Songs, August 16, 2015

This will be a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Phil’s Faves; Videos and Performances, August 16, 2015

This will be a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best videos currently available on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus mostly on current or recent videos. For this category, I am also going to include any live performances on talk or variety shows that I see during the week.

Phil’s Faves: August 9, 2015

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category. It may also give some insight as to what I might be playing in the near future on my radio show, “Theme Attic.” Once again, it’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Annual Dance Party Pre Show: Michelle Hanlon, Kim Carnes, and Dire Straits!!!

I stumbled upon Michelle Hanlon on Facebook and thought she was great! This song combines a very soulful vocal with a steamy, gospel flavored, New Orleans band. The playing sounds loose, but they are incredibly tight! Great slide guitar and piano solos! Here is the title track of her latest album, “This Is My Day!”:

Singer/songwriter Jackie DeShannon had a birthday on August 21, and one of the bits of info that I ran across concerning her is that she was a writer on “Bette Davis Eyes.” She did her own version years before Kim Carnes had her hit, but that’s the one that we remember. With it’s electronic handclaps and haunting guitar lines, the song sounded way ahead of its time when it was released. It seemed like the perfect addition to today’s “Dance Party!”:

Maybe today isn’t the best day for it, but how about a little “Twisting By the Pool” from Dire Straits? This song was released on a 4 song EP when it came out, and it showed Mark Knopfler’s playful side for the first time. The band brings the surf rock for a fun song and video!:

These and plenty of other dance songs will be on today’s “Theme Attic” heard every Wednesday, from 10A-12 Noon EDT on WHFR, 89.3 FM around Detroit, or listen here:

Summer Heat: Wendy Webb, The Rolling Stones, and Hayley Williams, Rivers Cuomo and The Muppets!!!

Singer/songwriter Wendy Webb has released another video from her wonderful “This Is the Moment” album. This one features scenes filmed in Cartagena, Columbia–a long way from her usual Florida stomping grounds! The music and song recalls a hot summer afternoon, just relaxing and listening to music!:

Summer showers from summer heat often produce rainbows. One of my favorite [FSOAT] Rolling Stones [Hall of Fame] songs is “She’s a Rainbow.” I am infatuated by the children’s toy piano that Brian Jones used to play the tune. The middle instrumental section, enhanced by strings, may be the prettiest thing that The Rolling Stones ever recorded!:

To wrap up the rainbow theme, The Muppets are coming back to television. What better way to mark the event than this montage of Rivers Cuomo (Weezer) and Hayley Williams (Paramore) teaming up to cover the song that is so important in Muppet lore!:

Hear these songs and more on today’s, Wednesday, August 19, on my “Theme Attic” show 10A-12 Noon EDT!
