Road Trippin’: Nemes, Steppenwolf, and Elmore James!!!

The Masachsettes band, Nemes, not only make catchy music, they also make creative videos! From their 2015 album, “I Carry Your Heart” comes this inventive video of their song, “Wrong!”:

I couldn’t resist the video for one of the greatest bike rider songs! For “Born to Be Wild,” Steppenwolf [Hall of Fame] uses scenes from the classic movie, “Easy Rider” to provide the visuals!:

Of course, if you’re on a road trip, ya gotta have some great music to listen to. Blues legend Elmore James’ “Dust My Broom” fills the bill!:

Phil’s Faves; Albums, July 26, 2015

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category. It may also give some insight as to what I might be playing in the near future on my radio show, “Theme Attic.” Once again, it’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, July 26, 2015

This will be a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Phil’s Faves: Videos and Performances, July 26, 2015

This will be a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best videos currently available on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus mostly on current or recent videos. For this category, I am also going to include any live performances on talk or variety shows that I see during the week.

Celestial Videos: Echosmith, Nanci Griffith, and David Bowie!!!

Surprisingly, one of my favorite songs AND videos for this year is Echosmith’s very sweet, “Bright.” The song contains many celestial observations and is probably the best song about young love since “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer! Doe eyed lead singer Sydney Sierota’s breathy vocal makes the song totally believable:

The first song and performance by Nanci Griffith [Hall of Fame] that I ever heard was “Once in a Very Blue Moon,” [a Favorite song of all time], and I have liked her ever since! The song is about a failed relationship that gets remembered every “blue moon.” Celestially speaking, that occurs about every two and a half years or so. One of those happens this Friday, and I look forward to playing this song every time. Here is an early clip of Nanci singing the song pretty much the way I saw her singing it the first time.:

David Bowie has a couple of new box sets on his early years ready for release so this new video of David Bowie singing “Space Oddity” has surfaced. There aren’t too many professions that are as exciting as being an astronaut as well as being the scariest and loneliest!

Tune in to today’s show at 10A EDT for more celestial songs!

“Theme Attic” Shuffle: Shania Twain, X, and Charlie Gracie!!!

Every show on “Theme Attic,” heard every Wednesday morning from 10A-12N EDT (http://www.whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html) has an eclectic range of music! Here’s a perfect example for today’s show!

On Shania Twain’s [Hall of Fame] first tour, I was lucky enough to get a second row seat and I haven’t been the same since. She is the most beautiful person I have ever seen in person! Looking at her was like trying not to look into the sun. I was afraid my eyes would burn out! Well, here she is probably her most famous video, “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” [Greatest Song Ever Recorded][Greatest Video}:

Coming to town on Friday at The Magic Bag in Ferndale is hard rockin’ post punk band from LA is the band known as “X.” They’ve been around for for 30+ years and always bring the energy. A favorite song of mine is their “Burning House of Love!”:

A recent story that took almost 60 years to materialize involves The Beatles [Hall of Fame] and Charlie Gracie. Charlie was a Philadelphia rockabilly cat, that was loved not only By Paul McCartney [Hall of Fame] and John Lennon [Hall of Fame] but also Graham Nash, Peter Noone, and others. Charlie has a new book about it, “Rock & Roll’s Hidden Giant,” but in honor of “Bugapalooza,” here’s one of his classic songs, “Butterfly!”:
