Phil’s Faves: Albums, June 14, 2015

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category. It may also give some insight as to what I might be playing in the near future on my radio show, “Theme Attic.” Once again, it’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, June 14, 2015

This will be a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Summer Sonics: Wendy Webb, Fever Tree, and Weird Al Yankovic!!!

Singer/Songwriter Wendy Webb composed a musical love poem to her adopted state, “Florida,” where for Michiganders has the weather of a perpetual summer. The video captures the feel of the song from her excellent album, “This is the Moment!”;

Fever Tree released a psychedelic blast of music in 1968 called “San Francisco Girls (Return of the Native).” The song was a trippy mixture of alternating driving guitar sections followed by mellow accordion segments. The song has a sweltering late night feel!:

In case you have a lot of summer home improvements to do, let Weird Al Yankovic [Hall of Fame] be your inspiration! From last year’s “Mandatory Fun,” Al does a very good take off on Iggy Azalea!:

This will be a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best videos currently available on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus mostly on current or recent videos. For this category, I am also going to include any live performances on talk or variety shows that I see during the week.

“Father’s Day Show” Fun: Trace Adkins, Jennifer Westwood and the Handsome Devils, and Weird Al Yankovic!!!

It’s so hard to believe that an artist like Trace Adkins, who has put out a string of “redneck” songs, can make such a touching song like “Just Fishin.'” I guess that’s what makes a true artist because the combination of the video and words can make a hardened person tear up. A great Father’s Day song!:

Speaking of “rednecks,” rockin’ country band Jennifer Westwood and The Handsome Devils–who put on one energetic live show, have a new release, “Greetings From This Town.” Appropriately enough for this post, a song on the album is called “Redneck Man” (Kind of a treat for Dad;))

And a perfect video that many people can relate to about their own dads, is Weird Al Yankovic’s [Hall of Fame] “Tacky” from “Mandatory Fun.”:
