Phil’s Faves: Songs, February 22, 2015

This will be a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Two Hot Concert Bands:Nora Jane Struthers and The Party Line, and The Steepwater Band!!!

If you missed Nora Jane Struthers and The Party Line when they played several shows around the state, you missed an incredible band (band in the truest sense of the word) that can tackle any style of music! Here they are in a house party setting offering up a little country dance music, “In a Crowd!”

Coming to town this Friday, March 20th at Hop Cat in Detroit, MI, is the rockin’ blues of The Steepwater Band! (Jeff Massey–Vocals and guitars, Joe Winters–Drums, Todd Bowers–Bass, and Eric Saylors–guitars) Here they are riffing through a celestial observation song, “The Stars Look Good Tonight!”

The Return of Pre Show Fun: Shania Twain, Shakira, and Annoying Dad!!!

Shania Twain [Hall of Fame] announced last week that she would be going out this year on her Farewell Tour. I’m taking her at her word thinking about Grace Slick and not Cher in the process. So I thought taking a look at Shania’s first video, “What Made You Say That,” and one of my favorite songs by her, would be worth a visit!

One of the song’s on today’s show is in Spanish. Shakira often releases songs in Spanish and this is the video for “Loba.” (“She Wolf”) I might be better off not saying anything else and just letting the video speak for itself!

This video makes me laugh because I could see me doing this with my kids. I don’t think I would have recorded it and placed it on you tube, but since this “annoying dad” did, let’s go with it!

Phil’s Faves: Videos, February 22, 2015

This will be a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best videos currently available on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus mostly on current or recent videos. For this category, I am also going to include any live performances on talk or variety shows that I see during the week.

Phil’s Faves: Albums, February 15, 2015

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category. It may also give some insight as to what I might be playing in the near future on my radio show, “Theme Attic.” Once again, it’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.
