Happy Thanksgiving: Joanie Leeds and The Nightlights, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Grohl, and Zac Brown, and Paul Thorn!!!

In honor of Thanksgiving Day, and the fact that I am not a fan of eating turkey, here’s a song for all of the vegetarians out there who must be going crazy out there today. Here’s Joanie Leeds and The Nightlights doing “Tofurky Song”

Bruce Springsteen [Hall of Fame] caused a bit of a stir–not of his own making, when he sang “Fortunate Son,” a John Fogerty, Creedence Clearwater Revival song with Dave Grohl, and Zack Brown at this year’s “Concert of Valor.” He’s been covering this song since it came out some 45 years ago, but for some reason uninformed commentators–who know nothing about music, decided to make an issue of it. This video is for people that you have to sit next to at Thanksgiving Day dinners whose brains are smaller than the one that was in the turkey!:

Continuing the previous description, it’s not a Thanksgiving Day without hearing Paul Thorn doing “I Don’t Like Half the Folks I Love.” (But ya gotta love them!) HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!!

Another “Theme Attic” Hall of Fame Show:Homer Simpson, “Weird Al” Yankovic, and Glen Campbell!!!

If you aren’t a big kid who will never grow up like me, you may not have caught the latest episode of The Simpsons. Homer Simpson forms a cover band with some of the other dads on the show. The band, “Covercraft,” becomes a big hit at a lot of “cabbage festivals.” Homer’s instrument of choice is the bass. Who knew he could be so funky! The whole episode isn’t available yet, but here’s the show’s opening sequence complete with Homer’s musical observations!:

While I’m in a silly mood, why not check out what “Weird Al” Yankovic is up to. This summer, Al released his contract ending 14th(?) album(!!!), and scored his first #1 on that chart! (Take that all you haters who thought he wasn’t making music anymore! Obviously, you haven’t been listening to my “Theme Attic” show where Al routinely pops up. He not only does covers, but he also writes some good originals! Anyway, back to the story.)
He says it will probably be his last official album. That doesn’t mean he’s hanging up his accordion (or his curly hair). It just means that for someone who does musical satire, there are faster ways to put out topical music. Here, Al riffs on Lorde’s “Royals”…and other things.:

To turn serious for a half second, Glen Campbell put out somewhat of a comeback album about six years ago, called “Meet Glen Campbell.” The album brought Glen back into the music world after being neglected for a number of years. It was followed up a few years later by another solid album. (“Ghost on the Canvas”) Glen wasn’t punching a clock or playing memories. He was being creative again. Here’s the video for “Sing” from that album. (Thanks for the request, Bill!):

Alright back to the silly! Here’s a deleted scene (for obvious reasons), of that bass man Homer Simpson:

Happy Thanksgiving!

Attack of the “Ands”: Billy Brandt and The Sugaree’s, Jason Didner and Jungle Gym Jam and Suzi Shelton, Grace and Tony!!!

Billy Brandt joins me on my “Theme Attic” show today for a “raw” interview we taped last month. His latest album has a classic “folk rock” sound that we discuss in depth. Here’s Billy and the rest of The Sugaree’s (I see Jason Dennie and Chris Degnore) touching your heart with the title track, “The Time Is Now!”:

Jason Didner and Jungle Gym Jam along with Suzi Shelton have just released a brand new version of a 70s classic with a super sized arrangement! It includes many musical elements–too many to count here, but you might want to make sure that your kitchen sink is still attached! It all works, so check out the boisterously happy “Free to Be, You and Me!”:

Next is the perfect song for a cold, gray November day. Grace and Tony, a powerful musical duo, capture a mood on their video for “November”:

Los Lobos, Real Estate, and Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Bands Provide the Heat on This Whiplash Autumn Day!!!

I saw Los Lobos [Hall of Fame] on Austin City Limits last weekend and I can’t get “Chuco’s Cumbia” out of my head! The band does a fundraiser for The Ark in Ann Arbor in a couple of weeks, too. It’s cold outside with early winter like temperatures, so why not heat things up with this muy caliente song! This is not an official video for it, but I feel it captures the spirit!:

The band Real Estate put out one of the best albums of the year with “Atlas!” It’s full of melodic melodies, cascading harmonies, jangly guitars, and hooks, and hooks, and hooks…………………… It’s been on my mp3 player since it came out! Let the warmth of the music enfold you in these freezing weather conditions. Here’s their video for “Talking Backwards”:

Bruce Springsteen [Hall of Fame] started writing legendary songs right from the start! 4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy) was one of the first ones that caught my attention. It was one of the greatest songs ever recorded [GSER] every time he does it! It’s so ironic that the boardwalk that he described was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy!!! Here’s a clip of Bruce and The E Street Band remembering warm summer days from their 1975 Hammersmith Odeon concert!:

Phil’s Faves: Videos, November 2, 2014

This will be a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best videos currently available on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus mostly on current or recent videos. For this category, I am also going to include any live performances on talk or variety shows that I see during the week.

Phil’s Faves: Albums, October 26, 2014

I’m starting a new list. Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category. It may also give some insight as to what I might be playing in the near future on my radio show, “Theme Attic.” Once again, it’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I’m going to leave this particular intro at the beginning of this list up for awhile because my first few listings will be unfair to some of the albums on my list. Many of the albums on here would have had a pretty good run at the top for a good part of the year, but they are still on my mp3 player because they are far better than almost anything out there. I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, October 26, 2014

This will be a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Pre Show Fun?!!: Huey Lewis & The News, Travis Tritt, and Paul Revere and The Raiders!!!

Post election day videos (Congratulations, if you’re happy!):
Huey Lewis and The News reworked a Dave Edmunds song, “Bad Is Bad,” into this bluesy version:

This Travis Tritt song might be more than 20 years old, but it still rings true today, even more so. Unfortunately. The title says it all: “Lord Have Mercy on the Working Man”:

Moving on to a different subject, this week’s new Hall of Fame entry battled British invasion artists quite successfully– even though they sometimes sounded British themselves! With the recent passing of “Paul Revere,” it’s time to place Paul Revere and The Raiders where they belong as probably the greatest garage bands of all time! Here they are delivering an early hit, “Steppin’ Out!:
