Phil’s Faves: Songs, August 3, 2014

This will be a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Women Rule Today’s Pre Show Fun: Jillian Rae, Janis Joplin, and Megan Trainor!!!

Jillian Rae and her band will be on my show today!!!!! It seems that the band has a preference for Led Zeppelin tunes. Not a bad choice. Here they are knocking off “The Ocean” in fine form!:

If you’d like to know a little more about Jillian Rae herself, here is an audition tape she made for the TV Show, “The Voice.” She sings a couple of nice ballads, “Breakaway” (Kelly Clarkson), and “I Can’t Make You Love Me” (Bonnie Raitt):

Summer is finally heating up. It’s also been 45 years since the Woodstock Festival.(Can ya believe it?) Here is a favorite of Jillian Rae’s, Janis Joplin [Hall of Fame], who was one of the performers, in a nice video montage of one of her staple songs: “Summertime”:

My favorite video at the moment is Megan Trainor’s “All About That Bass.” The video has a lot of pastels, but that wicked acoustic bass line and the “Girl Group” tribute have my attention!:

This will be a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best videos currently available on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus mostly on current or recent videos. For this category, I am also going to include any live performances on talk or variety shows that I see during the week.

Dance Party Pre Show:Elvis Presley, Laura Doherty, and George Bedard and The Kingpins!!!

The anniversary of Elvis Presley’s [Hall of Fame] death is soon approaching so as a tribute, here is one of his more infamous songs from “Fun in Acapulco!”:

Laura Doherty’s new album, “In a Heartbeat,” includes this peppy number that gets me going!:

George Bedard and The Kingpins close out the Ann Arbor Top of the Park every year. Here they are doing one of their signature songs and what happens if you don’t wear the proper clothing when you wanna “cut the rug!”:

Super Silly Pre Show Fun:Laura Doherty, Rowlf the Dog (The Muppets), and Paul McCartney!!!

Here is some special super silly “Animals” Pre Show Fun!:
Singer Laura Doherty has a new release of songs for youngsters and the young at heart. Here is an animated video of my favorite flamingo, Domingo, who likes to play drums like Ringo!:

I don’t think it was until I saw this video of “The Cat Came Back” from “The Muppets Show” sung by Rowlf the Dog that I became a fan. The cat who couldn’t even get “blowed up!” What’s not to like?!:

Of course, when you are hugely successful, you can do anything you like and get away with it. But that doesn’t mean it’s usually good! Here, Paul McCartney, gets his band Wings to do a charming version of “Mary Had a Little Lamb,”:

What a “Homecoming”: Johnny Winter, The MC5, and Kellie Pickler!!!

With guitar great Johnny Winter’s recent passing, it made me think that he is the person who got me started on the blues. I didn’t think of it as the blues back then. I just thought of it as “good music.” His “growl” and fluid slide guitar work are distinctive and unmatched! Here he is in his prime, from his Woodstock performance:

Detroit had a couple of birthdays recently–one good, one bad. Here the MC5 sing about the 1967 Detroit riots that started on July 23rd in “The Motor City Is Burning.” Check out those outfits!:

Kellie Pickler is the featured performer on Saturday at Dearborn’s Homecoming. She keeps evolving as an artist since her days on “American Idol.” Here she is kicking up her “Red High Heels!”:
