Phil’s Faves: Videos, June 15, 2014

This will be a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best videos currently available on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus mostly on current or recent videos. For this category, I am also going to include any live performances on talk or variety shows that I see during the week.

Pre Show Fun:Casey Kasem, Carmen Miranda, and Lucille Ball!!!

Casey Kasem passed away recently and there have been many excellent tributes to the man and the legend. I had a roommate who used to listen to American Top 40 every week and that’s how I was introduced to Casey. My influences as a DJ started earlier than that with DJs from WKNR, CKLW, and WABX, but you cannot minimize the influence that Casey had on the music, radio, and basically all media. Any one who does any kind of countdown owed a royalty to him. It was said that “he was the one who taught the world to count–backwards.” So as he officially joins my Hall of Fame, just notice how he could make something sound exciting even on something as silly as this David Letterman Top 10 Countdown:

Carmen Miranda was another original who was often imitated from Bugs Bunny cartoons to movies to TV Shows. She brought her sultry culture from Brazil to the US and the world. Here’s “The Brazilian Bombshell,” “the lady with the fruit on her head,” in a clip from the movie, “Down Argentine Way” doing her signature song, “Mama Eu Quero” (I Want My Mama):

When I was a kid, I never quite understood what Lucille Ball was doing on the show, but I knew it was funny! Here’s Lucy doing her comedy tribute to Carmen Miranda!:

This will be a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Father’s Day, World Cup, and a Full Moon with Friday the 13th: Paul McCartney, Air Miami, and Walter Egan!!!

Paul McCartney recorded a beautiful musical tribute to his father on his “Flowers in the Dirt” album. It’s based on a little cliche that his dad would say before shaking hands when they met. It’s perfect Father’s Day sentiment:

The quest for The World Cup starts tomorrow, June 12. Although there never was an official video for Air Miami’s “World Cup Fever” song, I kinda like this tribute to the 2011 Women’s World Cup:

This Friday is both a full moon plus a Friday the 13th calendar crossing. Oooh! Scary! So, I thought of Walter Egan’s slight monster movie homage, “Full Moon Fire.”:
