One of the greatest musical acts from Texas, a state known for its great musical acts, has reformed to put out another album of great Tex-Mex songs! Joe “King” Carrasco continues to put out solid, mostly fun, music, that makes you want to dance! Before Augie Myers was in the Texas Tornados, he rocked his Vox organ as a different “molino” with Joe. Check out “Rucca”:

One of my favorite signs of spring are daffodils. Here’s an odd dramatic duet by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood from a special she did called “Movin’ With Nancy.” The song references daffodils many times:

A weekly program that featured hot new artists was called “Hullabaloo.” Here’s a clip of Gerry & The Pacemakers doing their song “I’ll Be There.” I like the clip because it has Brian Epstein introducing one of his “discoveries”:

Phil’s Faves: Songs, February 2, 2014

This will be a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, and Linda Ronstadt:Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Pt.2!!!

Very few songs can be identified by just one chord. “A Hard Day’s Night” by The Beatles is one of them! The song and video are still just as amazing after 50 years!:

If you didn’t know Bruce Springsteen was the future of Rock and Roll by 1978, the music world had passed you by. Bruce built his reputation by monumental live performances! This video clip of “Rosalita” features the band at its most frenetic with saxman Clarence Clemons actually spinning like a top–cords and all! The highlights are Bruce fighting off the girls that keep attacking him during the song!:

Cat Stevens, Linda Ronstadt, and Dr. John All in One Very Special 1973 Concert!!!

ABC TV used to have a weekly 90 minute anthology show featuring several bands that was run on Friday nights from 11:30PM-1:00AM. Since concert audio and video were developing at the same time, (these were the early days of FM’s heyday), the shows were often simulcast on local rock radio stations.

This concert was unprecedented at the time! Cat Stevens exploded as an incredible talent and ABC gave him the full hour and a half to showcase himself! He brought along a very young Linda Ronstadt, who was on the verge of super-stardom herself, and Dr. John, who was still fresh from his “Right Place, Wrong Time” hit. They both performed Cat Stevens songs, making a special evening even more so!

Now they are all in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but this amazing concert is still something to marvel at:

Cinco de Mayo Fun With Los Lobos, Texas Tornados, and Uno, Dos, Tres, Con Andres!!!!!

In the mid 80’s, there was a sudden interest in roots and world music which has continued to the present. One of the first bands to be in the right place at the right time was Los Lobos, from East LA. Here they are playing their signature song from their first EP, “Let’s Say Goodnight”:

By the end of the decade, The “Mexican Beatles”–Texas Tornados appeared on the scene. Freddy Fender, Flaco Jimenez, Augie Myers, and Doug Sahm do a super catchy song from their self titled debut album, “Who Were You Thinkin’ Of”:

Just recently, a new “kindie” album was released with an obvious flair for all things Latin. Here’s “If I Had a Mariachi” from “Uno, Dos, Tres Con Andres”:
