Phil’s Faves, Songs, December 2, 2012

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Phil’s Faves: Videos, December 2, 2012

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best videos currently available on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus mostly on current or recent videos. For this category, I am also going to include any live performances on talk or variety shows that I see during the week.

“Q” Bombs: December 2, 2012

A “Q” Bomb, like an “H” bomb, will be my term for a music video that I consider to be subpar in music, video, or both. This will be a recurring weekly list that will focus on the worst videos that are currently on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus on solely on current or recent videos.
I hate to be so negative about music, but when an artist takes a “bad” song and then brings more attention to it by creating a “bad” video to support it, it will appear on this list. I honestly hope, and it could happen, that this list will be less than 10 items, but I have serious doubts that that possibility will happen. We are, after all, talking about an industry that uses art for huge profits. The companies can’t help themselves.
However, at this point, I will not do a 10 worst music list. I see absolutely no reason to waste time reemphasizing bad music. Once is enough.

Easton Corbin hangs on for an incredible sixth week! Just like with Jessica Dayle’s song on my other fave’s list, I know that when these songs disappear, this year’s summer will be gone for good………….

Top 10 Videos and Performances for the week of November 18, 2012

1. Lovin’ You Is Fun—Easton Corbin
2. Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye—Luke Bryan
3. Tornado—Little Big Town
4. Cruise—Florida Georgia Line
5. Beer Money—Kip Moore
6. I Like Girls That Drink Beer—Toby Keith
7. Take a Little Ride—Jason Aldean
8. Begin Again—Taylor Swift
9. Between the Raindrops—Lifehouse and Natasha Bedingfield
10. Fastest Girl in Town—Miranda Lambert

1) “Lovin’ You Is Fun”–This might be the last “hurrah” for Easton Corbin’s underappreciated gem of a video and song! I feel like if I hear this song years from now, this silly little video will instantly come to mind!
2) “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye”–Luke Bryan’s straight ahead 4X4 song provides the right backdrop for his hot video!
3) “Tornado”–I have a feeling that no one is going to blow away Little Big Town’s rugged video for quite awhile! I hope it catches on………………
4) “Cruise”–Florida Georgia Line keep a grand old tradition of video eye candy alive on their powerhouse video and song!
5) “Beer Money”–Kip Moore proves that sometimes it doesn’t take much to make a good video. Just a little, (gulp) “beer money”…………………….
6) “I Like Girls That Drink Beer”–Toby Keith has built a career around “everyman” songs, so the song isn’t covering any brand new territory, but it’s a formula that he does almost better than anyone else!
7) “Take a Little Ride”–Jason Aldean just makes us all experience what it might be like if you were an observer on a date of his. It works!
8) “Begin Again”–It looks like another long run for Taylor Swift is about to “begin
again!”
9) “Between the Raindrops”–This is a really nice collaboration between Lifehouse and Natasha Bedingfield. I lean towards Natasha because she has such a GREAT voice and is so incredibly pretty for any video!
10) “The Fastest Girl in Town”–Miranda Lambert is definitely slowing down on this video ride……………..

Phil’s Faves: A Banjo, A Boat, A Book and A Ballad (sort of)

I’m still thinking about some of my favorite songs of 2012. There was so much good music last year. Here are music videos of four of my top, best songs of the year. What were your favorites?

Banjo by Rascal Flatts is one of my favorite videos in what I like to call “The Year of The Banjo.” Of course, the talented and beautiful Ashley Campbell, Glen Campbell’s daughter, on banjo had a lot to do with that!;)

And, who doesn’t love Pontoon by Little Big Town?

Jimmy Fallon‘s version of The Doors’ Reading Rainbow is off the charts!

And, last but not least, Angel Eyes by Love and Theft, another great tune!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ
I really dislike the videos and songs on this list—particularly the first five. If I could have five #1 “Q” Bombs I would do it. Maybe things will start to change………..

Worst Videos for the week of November 18, 2012

1. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together—Taylor Swift
2. Blown Away—Carrie Underwood
3. Cowboys and Angels—Dustin Lynch
4. Ho Hey—The Lumineers
5. Come Wake Me Up—Rascal Flatts
6. Too Close—Alex Clare
7. Locked Out of Heaven—Bruno Mars
8. What Could Have Been Love—Aerosmith
9. As Long As You Love Me—Justin Bieber and Big Sean
10. Good Time—Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen

1) “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”—Taylor Swift continues her huge kickoff for her album “Red.” But for me, the good Taylor Swift news is that this video fell off of CMT’s countdown, was replaced by a better video and song (“Begin Again”),
and fell from the top spot on VH1. Those are all steps in the right direction………………
2) “Blown Away”—As I stated in a previous “Q” Bomb article, Carrie Underwood finally makes it to the top on CMT. Hopefully, it can finally start to move down the list………….
3) “Cowboys and Angels”—Who likes this video? It moved back up to #2 on CMT. ODWITS!
4) “Ho Hey”—So lay….m (lame)……………………..
5) “Come Wake Me Up”—So many other videos and songs are annoying me more than this video, so Rascal Flatts gets a pass…for now…………………
6) “Too Close”—Alex Clare is #3 on VH1. Way “too close”…………………
7) “Locked Out of Heaven”—Bruno Mars has admitted that Michael Jackson is an idol of his and this video and song looks and sounds just like him. This is one of the few times that that isn’t a good thing……….
8) “What Could Have Been Love”—OK. I’m at a loss for words…
9) “As Long As You Love Me”—Justin Bieber keeps leveling off and not falling. Canadian youth, apparently, just don’t understand gravity…………..
10) “Good Time”—Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen fall a lot on VH1. Well, now, that’s a good time………………………
