Phil’s Faves: Songs, November 11, 2012

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Jessica Dayle stays on top into the middle of November, but the winds of change may be coming in the form of Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys and Annie Haslam and Renaissance……..

Top Ten Songs for the Week of November 11, 2012

1. Summertime—Jessica Dayle
2. The Leaves Are Changing—Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys
3. Day of the Dreamer—Renaissance
4. Little Misunderstood—Barbara Lynn Doran
5. Tell Me Why—Frijid Pink
6. Lovin’ You Is Fun—Easton Corbin
7. Begin Again—Taylor Swift
8. What a Shame (Single Version)—George Bedard
9. Thirsty Monkey—Rock and Roll Monkey and The Robots
10. Love’s Gone Bad—The Underdogs

1) “Summertime”—Jessica Dayle’s song is still #1 on my list, and still #1 in my heart…for another week!
2) “The Leaves Are Changing”—I have a tree in front of my house that has a core batch of leaves that never fall off until the spring even though they’ve changed colors. Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys are just like those leaves with this song about…leaves! So catchy!
3) “Day of the Dreamer”—Man, am I getting hooked on this song again…and I’ve been hooked on it before! The song features many incredible piano and synthesizer sections that tie together the verse and chorus sections. I don’t really understand what all of the lyrics mean. I guess that’s pretty normal for a lot of prog—rock songs, but it’s the overall presentation of the song that makes it “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded! (GSER)
4) “Little Misunderstood”—I’m not happy that Barbara Lynn Doran wasn’t understood when she was young…But I am happy that she made a GREAT song out of the experience!
5) “Tell Me Why”—A fuzzed out psychedelic romp from a forgotten Detroit rock band best known for their version of “House of the Rising Sun.” That one is great, too, but this one is my favorite. The song sounds like it’s ready to fall apart any second. There are several breaks. But the wah-wah guitars and ear splitting drums keep the funky song moving in the right direction! Parrot Records knew what they were doing when they signed this band!
6) “Lovin’ You Is Fun”—I think Easton’s run is coming to an end, but I’m glad he showed up…twice!
7) “Begin Again”—I guess I am falling into the hypnotic Taylor Swift trap as I keep replaying that line in my mind, “watched it begin again.” I don’t even want to. It’s not like it’s great or anything. It just pulls you in…………. Aaargh! I can’t stop it!!!!
8) “What a Shame” (Single Version)—I have always liked this George Bedard classic. It’s really cool to run across this early version of a song that would end up as the opening track on George Bedard and The Kingpins highly touted “Upside” album! georgebedard.com
9) “Thirsty Monkey”—A mostly instrumental track (except for a very cute often repeated “Thirsty”) featuring a nice twangy guitar line that would make Duane Eddy proud! Another rock band in the Detroit tradition!
10) “Love’s Gone Bad”—A Detroit area band from the mid-60s that released one of the best blue-eyed soul singles of the decade that no one knows about—or remembers. Using a very hooky hi-hat (the cymbals that the drummer mashes together) technique, The Underdogs moan through lines like, “Ice cold water running through my veins/Take me back to earth again.” The pain sounds so real…and danceable. An incredible single!

Phil’s Faves:Videos, November 11, 2012

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best videos currently available on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus mostly on current or recent videos. For this category, I am also going to include any live performances on talk or variety shows that I see during the week.

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ
Five straight weeks on top for Easton Corbin, but Luke Bryan is giving him some serious competition……………….
QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Top 10 Videos and Performances for the week of November 11, 2012

1. Lovin’ You Is Fun—Easton Corbin
2. Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye—Luke Bryan
3. Beer Money—Kip Moore
4. I Like Girls That Drink Beer—Toby Keith
5. Take a Little Ride—Jason Aldean
6. Tornado—Little Big Town
7. Cruise—Florida Georgia Line
8. Fastest Girl in Town—Miranda Lambert
9. Between the Raindrops—Lifehouse and Natasha Bedingfield
10. Begin Again—Taylor Swift

1) “Lovin’ You Is Fun”—There’s really not a lot more to say about Easton Corbin’s  video that I haven’t already said, but I’ll keep picking it as #1 until I get tired of it or something better comes along!
2) “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye”—Luke Bryan’s video and song continue to keep my attention!
3) “Beer Money”—I think Kip Moore has peaked for me, but it still is a good video!
4) “I Like Girls That Drink Beer”—Hey, this isn’t any “Red Solo Cup” but Toby Keith gets the job done again with a catchy melody!
5) “Take a Little Ride”—I’m glad Jason Aldean allows us to go with him on his “little ride!”
6) “Tornado”—Little Big Town do a lot of walking around with a purpose like they did in “Little White Church.” I would not want to cross the women in this group to make them angry……….
7) “Cruise”—The Florida Georgia Line moved a little further south this week. I think I’m getting a little tired from all of the rides on some of the songs higher up on the list………..
8) “Fastest Girl in Town”—Speaking of rides…At least Miranda Lambert is smart enough to ride shotgun with Danica Patrick!
9) “Between the Raindrops”—Natasha Bedingfield is like a chameleon, constantly changing her looks in her videos. I originally didn’t recognize her, but you can’t disguise that killer voice of hers! Lifehouse were smart enough to get her onto both the video and song!
10) “Begin Again”—Taylor Swift romps around Paris in clothes resembling outfits Shania Twain wore in “From This Moment.” I would still take Shania first, but Taylor does a good enough job!

“Q” Bombs: November 11, 2012

A “Q” Bomb, like an “H” bomb, will be my term for a music video that I consider to be subpar in music, video, or both. This will be a recurring weekly list that will focus on the worst videos that are currently on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus on solely on current or recent videos.
I hate to be so negative about music, but when an artist takes a “bad” song and then brings more attention to it by creating a “bad” video to support it, it will appear on this list. I honestly hope, and it could happen, that this list will be less than 10 items, but I have serious doubts that that possibility will happen. We are, after all, talking about an industry that uses art for huge profits. The companies can’t help themselves.
However, at this point, I will not do a 10 worst music list. I see absolutely no reason to waste time reemphasizing bad music. Once is enough.

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ
Taylor Swift stays at the top spot on the bad list for a second—and hopefully, last time……………

Worst Videos for the week of November 11, 2012

1. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together—Taylor Swift
2. Blown Away—Carrie Underwood
3. Cowboys and Angels—Dustin Lynch
4. Ho Hey—The Lumineers
5. Come Wake Me Up—Rascal Flatts
6. Too Close—Alex Clare
7. Locked Out of Heaven—Bruno Mars
8. What Could Have Been Love—Aerosmith
9. As Long As You Love Me—Justin Bieber and Big Sean
10. Good Time—Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen

1) “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”—Oh, no. It happened again. Taylor Swift moved back on top of VH1’s countdown. ODWITS!
2) “Blown Away”—Carrie Underwood anchors the top spot again on CMT. No chance of it getting “blown away” this week…………….
3) “Cowboys and Angels”—Dustin Lynch’s video is still hanging around way too long but at least he ran into Carrie Underwood’s buzzsaw………
4) “Ho Hey”—The Lumineers continue to defy gravity moving up to number 4 on VH1…………
5) “Come Wake Me Up”—Rascal Flatts appear to be running out of steam. I hope that’s true…………..
6) “Too Close”—Alex Clare looks like he may have gotten as close to the top as he’s going to get on VH1………………….
7) “Locked Out of Heaven”—Nothing particularly new or interesting here from Bruno Mars…………..
8) “What Could Have Been”—You’ve got to be kidding me! Seriously, is this how Aerosmith is planning to make a comeback with this retread of “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” but fourteen years later—as if they hadn’t had a new musical thought in that time span……………
9) “As Long As You Love Me”—Justin Bieber keeps hanging on even after splitting up with Selena Gomez………………
10) “Good Time”—Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen fell but have now leveled off. Not such a good time anymore………………………

Fourteen weeks and counting for Jessica Dayle! I guess global warming really is happening since “Summertime” refuses to release its hold on the number one spot……………

Top Ten Songs for the Week of November 4, 2012

1. Summertime—Jessica Dayle
2. The Leaves Are Changing—Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys
3. Little Misunderstood—Barbara Lynn Doran
4. 4th of July (Sandy)—Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
5. I’m Mitt—Elliot Astur
6. Dance in the Graveyards—Delta Rae
7. It’s Hard to Be a Saint in the City—Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
8. Day of the Dreamer–Renaissance
9. Sweet Cider—Gathering Time
10. Political Science—Randy Newman

1) “Summertime”—When will the run end for this Jessica Dayle gem? I certainly wish it would stay “Summertime” forever, but I feel winds of change starting to blow…………
2) “The Leaves Are Changing”—It appears that there are conflicting weather patterns at the top. Heading into winter, one would think that fall will win. Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys will provide the music!
3) “Little Misunderstood”—Barbara Lynn Doran sticks around with her impressive semi—autobiographical music gem!
4) “4th of July (Sandy)”—I hunted this song down as Hurricane Sandy wreaked devastation on the East Coast—including the same areas that Bruce Springsteen sang about in this song! It is a beautiful but unpolished slice-of-life about the Jersey boardwalk. My favorite part of the song is Bruce’s noncommital “I promise I’ll love you…forever?” And then the confidence comes back strong with “Oh, I mean it Sandy girl!” The late Danny Federici’s strolling accordion gives the song just the right touch of ambience, too!
5) “I’m Mitt”—Elliot Astur, a singer/songwriter who balances political songs as well as “secular” songs, sums up the person known as Mitt Romney with biting lyrical precision.
And it’s so darn catchy!
6) “Dance in the Graveyards”—Delta Rae take a creepy sounding title and turn it into a funky groove of resurrection. The song is extremely catchy with a “wicked” hypnotic drumbeat!
7) “It’s Hard to Be a Saint in the City”—One of my favorite Springsteen songs—and that’s saying a lot. Starting with acoustic guitar chords and then Dave Sancious’ funky piano riffs, Bruce slithers through street scenes where the beggars cry out, “Nickels for your pity” and the downtown girls “sure do talk gritty.” It’s like the best Tom Waits song he never wrote. The song is really more jazz than rock and but it flows amorphously from section to section. You can hear the rain and sweat on the bell of Vinny Lopez’ cymbals and you can feel and smell the heat that Bruce mostly raps about —not sing, as the street poet character he used to be. It’s incredible to think that he and the band would even get better after this song!
8) “Day of the Dreamer”—One of the greatest songs ever recorded! (GSER) Renaissance had already done their classic best work when they nailed this one, but that doesn’t mean that there wasn’t anything left in the tank. The album featuring this song, “A Song for All Seasons,” was overproduced and way too busy with the orchestral/pops arrangements. “Day of the Dreamer”–even with everything that was thrown into the mix, is the pinnacle of the album! I have been hooked on it from time to time, and man, I am hooked on it now!
9) “Sweet Cider”—A gloriously happy folk throwback that shows a heavy Peter, Paul, & Mary influence! It recalls wistful memories of cider mills and donuts. If you’re drinking cider while listening to the song, the experience is even more intense! The rest of their album, “Red Apples and Gold” continues the apple theme!
10) “Political Science”—A wickedly acerbic tongue-in-cheek take on the stereotypical way that Americans view the rest of the world that is now out of date since the song was written over 40 years ago. Or is it? Very few musicians can get away describing militarily attacking other countries in the world by singing, “Boom! goes London/And Boom! Paris/More room for you/And more room for me.” Gee, and he wonders why everyone hates “us.” Brilliant satire!

So What’s Up with Phil Maq?

Hello everybody!

I hope your holidays turned out the way you wanted them. I know that mine were better than last year.

So that brings us to the big question:Why did the postings stop?

Well, there were a few reasons.

First, I got sick around Thanksgiving and that took me out for close to two weeks.

Then there was the furnace problem. It’s really difficult to write something when you live in a cold climate and the furnace has been off for a few days at a time. The problem is now solved.

Throw in the fact that the holidays are just busier than most fat guys and elves can handle, and that brings us up-to-date.

I am going to fill in the missing pieces for last year. I’m not sure how long that will take, but there was a flood of really good music in the last quarter of 2012.

Once that’s done, then I’ll reassess how I want to continue. But believe me, I’m not going anywhere because my obsession with music isn’t getting any smaller.

So that’s my update for the moment.

Let the writing commence!

Peace,
Phil Maq

Phil’s Faves: Videos – Best Music Videos of the Year

Here’s my vote for best music video of the year, In Your Arms by Kina Grannis. It was made using 288,000 Jelly Belly jelly beans to create the stop motion animation with jelly bean art.

Here’s a video on the making of the In Your Arms video. Very cool.

Another favorite of mine this year is A Thousand Years by Christina Perri from the movie, Breaking Dawn: Part I.

Videos: Some Fun and Amusing Christmas Videos

As we head into the last weekend before the Christmas holiday, here are four videos that I find fun to watch!

This cover of a Holly Jolly Christmas by Lady Antebellum brings a smile to my face.

Stan Freberg thinks he’s getting Nuttin’ for Christmas.

Here’s an out of this world video for the holidays, Chiron Beta Prime by Jonathan Coulton.

And, what would Christmas be like without Christmas at Ground Zero by Weird Al Yankovic.

Video: Mariah Carey and Jimmy Fallon – All I want for Christmas is You

Mariah Carey’s version of All I Want for Christmas is You has become a holiday classic. Here she is, jamming with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots, backstage before her recent appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. All the instruments were ones that could be found in an elementary school classroom, proving that it doesn’t take millions of dollars to make great music!

Well, our obsession with Psy and his hit song, Sexy Lady, and Korean dance craze, Gangnam style, continues into the holidays. Here’s a great video with Christmas lights set to Sexy Lady.

Enjoy!

And, here’s how they do it in Perth, Australia:

A Thanksgiving Treat

After you’ve eaten your fill of turkey and stuffing, enjoy my special Thanksgiving Treat, just for you.

Thanksgiving is the start of the holiday shopping season, and from a musical standpoint, it’s when we begin to hear Christmas music on a daily basis. Thanksgiving in and of itself is a bit shy on songs, but I’ve found some I’d like you to hear.

First off is the new “Thanksgiving Song” by Nicole Westbrook.

This next one has Christmas in the title, but it will bring a smile to your face this Thanksgiving. It’s called, “Henry Had a Merry Christmas” by Walter Brennan.

And, last but not least, “Fat Man’s Prayer.” I give you two versions, one by TV Seller and the original, Victor Bouno.
