Phil’s Faves: Songs, December 4, 2011

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

“Paradise” by Coldplay ends up topping both the video “faves” as well as this week’s song “faves!” The Black Keys enter with a really cool song, and even a Christmas “cover” makes its way on. Of course, it’s the time of year when things like that can happen……………

Top Ten Songs for the Week of December 4, 2011

1. Paradise–Coldplay
2. We Owned the Night–Lady Antebellum
3. A Thousand Years—Christina Perri from “Breaking Dawn, Part One”
4. (I Want To) Come Home–Paul McCartney (From the movie “Everybody’s Fine”)
5. Sparks Fly–Taylor Swift
6. The Trouble With Girls—Scotty McCreery
7. Lonely Boy—The Black Keys
8. Long Hot Summer-Keith Urban
9. Santa You Can Drive My Sled—The Fab (Beatles tribute band from Las Vegas)
10. Down at the Plaza–Pat Bergeson (featuring Dan Anderson, Tom Roady, and Steve Shapiro)

1) “Paradise”—This is such a great “simbie!” It goes through my head a lot even when I don’t want it to!
2) “We Owned the Night”—A solid song that didn’t seem like it had the legs to hang around this long!
3) “A Thousand Years”—One of the best haunting melodies of the year!
4) (“I Want To) Come Home”—Paul drops from the top spot. Let’s see if I hear it enough to hang around………
5) “Sparks Fly”—Taylor moves up another notch again! You just can’t count her out at any time………
6) “The Trouble With Girls”—This song has a solid chorus that gets under your skin! (Scotty had a little problem, though, with his Thanksgiving Day parade performance. The dude can’t even lip synch?!!!!)
7) “Lonely Boy”—Oh, yeah! The first single from “El Camino” is another solid smash from the boys that brought you the gritty “Tighten Up!”
8) “Long Hot Summer”—Keeping me warm as the weather gets colder!
9) “Santa You Can Drive My Sled”—Not only is this an incredible spot on cover of The Beatles’ “Drive My Car,” but it’s one of the best entries ever of a Beatles song being used as a Christmas song! I heard this one on “Dennis Mitchell’s Breakfast with The Beatles,” and it will stick around on my list—but only if I get to hear it some more. After all, those are the rules………..
10) “Down at the Plaza”Tom Roady was laid to rest, and unfortunately, this song is also ending its run. I personally hope that Tom is up in heaven playing drums in the best band ever! What would you expect for one of the best?!

Phil’s Faves: Videos, December 4, 2011

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best videos currently available on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus mostly on current or recent videos. For this category, I am also going to include any live performances on talk or variety shows that I see during the week.

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ
Coldplay leapfrogs into the top spot this week, Britney Spears drops fast, and there were some great live TV moments!
QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Top 10 Videos for the week of December 4, 2011

1. Paradise–Coldplay
2. Sparks Fly—Taylor Swift
3. A Thousand Years–Christina Perri from “Breaking Dawn, Part One
4. The One That Got Away–Katy Perry
5. Red Solo Cup–Toby Keith
6. Criminal–Britney Spears
7. Reading Rainbow–Jimmy Fallon on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon”
8. Home—Dierks Bentley on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon”
9. Baggage Claim—Miranda Lambert live on “CMA Awards”
10. Taylor Swift Interview—“60 Minutes”

1) “Paradise”—How can you not like this video? The elephant reunion is so sweet!
2) “Sparks Fly”—All of the recent attention on Taylor Swift is keeping this video hot!
3) “A Thousand Years”—I watch this video every time it’s on! Bruno Mars’ “It Will Rain” shows up in the “Breaking Dawn” movie while people are still in the theater. Christina’s song plays after it when everyone’s in their car so no one really hears the song! I guess timing really is everything.
4) “The One That Got Away”—I like the drama in the video. This is one time when it works well!
5) “Red Solo Cup”—The parade of cameos start off with Craig Ferguson and Geoff and continue from there! It’s a good place to start! I probably saw this video more than any other video during the week!
6) “Criminal”—This one’s dropping fast. I don’t think it will be around much longer….
7) “Reading Rainbow”—This was the best thing I saw all week! Jimmy’s impersonation of Jim Morrison was so incredible, it amazed and confused anybody I showed it to. It was a recreation of The Doors performing “Light My Fire” on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” The Fallon performance kind of morphed into a combination “The End” and “When the Music’s Over.” It was so good, it almost wasn’t funny, but the ridiculous lyrics and the actual thought of Morrison singing “Good Night Moon” or “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” made a surreal moment side splittingly hilarious! This one is worth hunting down!
8) “Home”—Dierks’ live rendition of this song about war veterans returning home made it even more stirring than the very good studio version!
9) “Baggage Claim”—This live version also captured the song better than the studio version particularly as the stage catches fire! Miranda makes a better angry ex-lover than almost anyone else out there!
10) “Taylor Swift Interview”—Although this isn’t a music video, it showed some interesting behind the scenes footage of what happens at one of her concerts. A comment that I found particularly poignant was when a columnist at Billboard Magazine was asked about her ability as a songwriter because of her youth and beauty. He said that to the contrary, that if she wasn’t so young and pretty that she would be considered an even better songwriter! I wholeheartedly agree!

“Q” Bombs: December 4, 2011

A “Q” bomb, like an “H” bomb, will be my term for a music video that I consider to be subpar in music, video, or both. This will be a recurring weekly list that will focus on the worst videos that are currently on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus on solely on current or recent videos.
I hate to be so negative about music, but when an artist takes a “bad” song and then brings more attention to it by creating a “bad” video to support it, it will appear on this list. I honestly hope, and it could happen, that this list will be less than 10 items, but I have serious doubts that that possibility will happen. We are, after all, talking about an industry that uses art for huge profits. The companies can’t help themselves.
However, at this point, I will not do a 10 worst music list. I see absolutely no reason to waste time reemphasizing bad music. Once is enough.

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ
“Footloose” stays on top of the junk pile for another week. The good news is that it doesn’t appear to be going much higher. On the other hand, “It Will Rain” keeps moving up. Things may have to switch next week. Three new entries on the list, but I don’t feel that they are all that terrible. I could actually change my opinion about two of them, and the third one, I like the song but not the video. All of this is bad for “Q” Bombs but good for viewers…………….
QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Worst Videos for the week of December 4, 2011

1. Footloose–Blake Shelton
2. It Will Rain—Bruno Mars from “Breaking Dawn, Part One”
3. God Gave Me You–Blake Shelton
4. Remind Me—Brad Paisley with Carrie Underwood
5. It Girl–Jason Derulo
6. Easy–Rascal Flatts with Natasha Bedingfield
7. Shake It Off–Florence + The Machine
8. I’m Gonna Love You Through It—Martina McBride
9. Tonight Is the Night-Outasight
10. Let Go-Safetysuit

1) “Footloose”—Out of all of the songs that could have been dredged up from the past, why did it have to be this one……………………………..
2) “It Will Rain”—I’d “toss a grenade” at this one if I could. Figuratively, speaking, of course………………………
3) “God Gave Me You”—At least it looks like this one has “plateaued”……….or “planked”, if you prefer………………………………
4) “Remind Me” —Still top 10…….Still annoying………………
5) “It Girl”—Not falling fast enough…………………….
6) “Easy”— Falling, falling, but oh, so slowly……………………….Same as last week……………..
7) “Shake It Off”—This one actually went up this week on VH1. Why??????
8] “I’m Gonna Love You Through It”—The song is fine. I just don’t like it being interrupted by its pseudo documentary style video. I feel bad for just having said that considering the subject of the video is recovering from breast cancer. Sorry…………………………….But it should have been better………………
9) “Tonight Is the Night”—There seems to be a lot of these songs this year……….
10) “Let Go”–Kind of a spastic video….The kind I don’t like………………

Not much action this week as my current favorites continue on as my favorites! Paul McCartney stays at the top for another week.  Keith Urban is the only new entry as he nudges onto the list………………
QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Top Ten Songs for the Week of November 27, 2011

1. (I Want To) Come Home–Paul McCartney (From the movie “Everybody’s Fine”)
2. We Owned the Night–Lady Antebellum
3. Blood Pressure–Mutemath
4. A Thousand Years—Christina Perri from “Breaking Dawn, Part One”
5. Paradise–Coldplay
6. Sparks Fly–Taylor Swift
7. Down at the Plaza–Pat Bergeson (featuring Dan Anderson, Tom Roady, and Steve Shapiro)
8. The Trouble With Girls—Scotty McCreery
9. Long Hot Summer-Keith Urban
10. Red Solo Cup–Toby Keith

1) (“I Want To) Come Home”—This song seemed so appropriate for the Thanksgiving weekend!
2) “We Owned the Night”—I think this one is continuing to grow on me!
3) “Blood Pressure”—I don’t think this one is getting the recognition it deserves! Sadly, maybe no one wants to “rock out” like they used to…………
4) “A Thousand Years”—Still strong and growing as one of my favorites!
5) “Paradise”—This one is really getting to me! Watch out!
6) “Sparks Fly”Taylor moves up a notch again! It’s like an “old reliable” song!
7) “Down at the Plaza”—I’m sorry to say that Tom Roady, the drummer on “Hippy Dance,” the CD that this song is from, passed away this week. He played for so many artists on so many records (everyone from James Brown to Bob Seeger), that you know him even if you don’t “know” him. I was just starting to know him and I will miss him every time I discover something that he played on but never knew it……………………..
8) “The Trouble With Girls”—Nice dreamy melody! See, I don’t dislike him. He even gets a smiley face this week………………………….
9) “Long Hot Summer”—This song has been around for quite awhile, and it finally got to me this week!
10) “Red Solo Cup”—A nice little ditty about a man and his cup fixation………………………

This week, Britney Spears makes it to the top and Taylor Swift drops to the second slot. Ah, isn’t that what videos are for…………………………………………..

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Top 10 Videos for the week of November 27, 2011

1. Criminal–Britney Spears
2. Sparks Fly—Taylor Swift
3. Paradise–Coldplay
4. Red Solo Cup–Toby Keith
5. A Thousand Years–Christina Perri from “Breaking Dawn, Part One
6. The One That Got Away–Katy Perry
7. In Performance at the White House: The Motown Sound featuring Sheryl Crow, Seal, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Natasha Bedingfield, Gloriana, John Legend, Jordin Sparks, Ledisi, Nick Jonas, Jamie Foxx, Martha Reeves, and Greg Phillanganes
8. (It’s Not My) Baby—Jimmy Fallon as Justin Bieber from Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
9. Mr. Know It All–Kelly Clarkson on the American Music Awards
10. Why Can’t We “Unfriend”—War on Jimmy Kimmel Live

1) “Criminal”—I think this one is a “bear song” and the only thing moving it up is the video. I really hate it when they show a shortened version because I enjoy seeing Britney kick her boyfriend in the “nads” after he slaps her! I would prefer not seeing the slap ever, against any woman, but the kick makes me laugh every time!
2) “Sparks Fly”—What can I say about this one that I haven’t already said? I like it! OK?
3) “Paradise”—I like the impeccable timing of the giraffe in the video!
4) “Red Solo Cup”“Red Solo Cup/You’re not just a cup/You’re my…friend!”
5) “A Thousand Years”—Still only a countdown contender on VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown. I’m tired of waiting for everyone to catch on—if they ever will. I’m moving this one up because I like it a lot!
6) “The One That Got Away”—It seems a drag that the guy loses his life after Katy throws paint on his painting after he rejects her input. A steep price to pay, but a good video anyway!
7) “In Performance at the White House: The Motown Sound—I thought this show was going to be passable karaoke versions of Motown hits and boy was I surprised! This isn’t new and I happened to stumble upon it when I couldn’t sleep at 5AM. I have seen it three times now and I would watch it again!
8) “(It’s Not My) Baby”Jimmy Fallon’s impressions are sometimes a hit or miss proposition, but this one is incredibly funny! Fallon does a spot-on Justin Bieber— including dancing, as he parodies Bieber’s “Baby” song while denying that he’s the father from the paternity claim brought against him!
9) “Mr. Know It All”Kelly Clarkson boldly takes a jab at those who try to force her to do things “for the good of her career” by performing her hot new single as a swing variation of Benny Goodman’s “Swing, Swing, Swing!” I usually like Kelly and I even have more respect for her now!
10) “Why Can’t We ‘Unfriend?’”—Another hilarious spoof for Jimmy Kimmel’s National Unfriend Day,” this one performed by War! They do a nice job using their own “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” as the base song!

Worst Videos for the week of November 27, 2011

1. Footloose–Blake Shelton
2. Blood Pressure–Mutemath
3. God Gave Me You–Blake Shelton
4. It Will Rain—Bruno Mars from “Breaking Dawn, Part One”
5. Remind Me—Brad Paisley with Carrie Underwood
6. Easy–Rascal Flatts with Natasha Bedingfield
7. It Girl–Jason Derulo
8. The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie–Red Hot Chili Peppers
9. A Thousand Years-Christina Perri on Jimmy Kimmel Live
10. Shake It Off–Florence + The Machine

1) “Footloose”—It’s really difficult for me to even sit through this one…………….
2) “Blood Pressure”Jim Shearer, the host of VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown, said that the band did this video all in one day. Really. That long………………..
3) “God Gave Me You”—I still feel like this one’s going to be around for a while…
4) “It Will Rain”—I can’t believe that this is the song that people like from the Twilight movie……
5) “Remind Me” —I still watch this one trying to get something meaningful out of it. Nope. It never happens……………………
6) “Easy”— Falling, falling, but oh, so slowly……………………….
7) “It Girl”—Jason goes and rhymes it with “shhh” (sic?). That’s not being good. That’s just being lazy dude………………….
8] “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie”—Oh, if only something interesting happened during this video. You know. Like a video……………….
9) “A Thousand Years”—I was really looking forward to this performance when I heard about it but was disappointed after watching it. Christina seemed very uneasy singing the song and even seemed relieved once it was over. This won’t help the song…….
10) “Shake It Off”—Still hanging onto the list for another week. It won’t be long now….

Paul McCartney stays at the top for a second week in front of a strong group of contenders! Oh, and Scotty McCreery redeems himself……

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Top Ten Songs for the Week of November 20, 2011

1. (I Want To) Come Home–Paul McCartney (From the movie “Everybody’s Fine”)
2. We Owned the Night–Lady Antebellum

4. A Thousand Years—Christina Perri from “Breaking Dawn, Part One”

7. Sparks Fly–Taylor Swift
8. Paradise–Coldplay
9. Stereo Hearts–Gym Class Heroes with Travie McCoy and Adam Levine
10. The Trouble With Girls—Scotty McCreery

1) (“I Want To) Come Home”—Another week at the top! The string arrangement really makes it sound so Beatlesque!
2) “We Owned the Night”—Right now, Lady A owns the Number 2 spot!
3) “Blood Pressure”—One of the best rock songs of the year!
4) “A Thousand Years”—OK, I don’t know what everybody is waiting for on this one, but you’re missing out on a good one! I mean, she’s waited for a thousand years………
5) “Red Solo Cup”—The song isn’t as good as the video, so this one might be peaking….
6) “Down at the Plaza”—The “plaza” might be closing soon…..
7) “Sparks Fly”—Watch out for this one. It’s kind of tricky and has a tendency to sneak up on you when you’re not paying attention………………
8) “Paradise”—A really good “simbie” chorus!
9) “Stereo Hearts”—Fading after a decent run……….
10) “The Trouble With Girls”—I actually like this one, especially the chorus line, “The trouble with girls is nobody loves trouble as much as me.” A GREAT line!

Well, Lady Antebellum didn’t stay at the top too long. So there’s a new Number 1 this week! (Not really. It’s just Taylor Swift again……….)
Jimmy Kimmel Live seemed to be the best place for live performances this past week…

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Top 10 Videos for the week of November 20, 2011

1. Sparks Fly—Taylor Swift
2. Red Solo Cup–Toby Keith
3. Criminal–Britney Spears
4. We Owned the Night–Lady Antebellum
5. Paradise–Coldplay
6. A Thousand Years–Christina Perri from “Breaking Dawn, Part One”
7. The One That Got Away-Katy Perry
8. To All the Friends I’ve “Unned” Before-Brad Paisley and Darius Rucker on Jimmy Kimmel Live
9. Without You-David Guetta & Usher
10. I Got You-Thompson Square on Jimmy Kimmel Live

1) “Sparks Fly”—Out of all the best videos out there right now, even though I’ve watched this one so many times, I like it better than any the other ones! Taylor climbs back to the top spot! (However, I do think “Mean” is the better video………….)
2) “Red Solo Cup”—Oh, come on now! How can you not like a video where a guy urinates into a cup and then passes it on to his buddy to drink?!!!
3) “Criminal”—Whoooo! Let’s hear it for showers!!!
4) “We Owned the Night”—I still like the video, but the song is definitely better….
5) “Paradise”—The African scenery in the video is so beautiful!
6) “A Thousand Years”—Alright. I’m starting to worry about this one. Where are all the “twihards” that should push this one to the top……………………………
7)”The One That Got Away”—Oh, gosh. It took Katy all day to put on the make up for this video. Boo hoo! Yeah, like I believe that one. However, having said that, it’s an interesting video with a catchy song……….
8) “To All the Friends I’ve ‘Unned’ Before”—Brad Paisley, a master of satirical songs, pulls his buddy Darius Rucker in for a spot on cover of Willie Nelson & Julio Iglesias’ “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before” for Jimmy Kimmel’s “National Unfriend Day” or “NUD” for short!
9) “Without You”—A cool video and song of Pangea in reverse!
10) “I Got You”—A very confident and rocking performance of this song since I last saw them perform it live in May at the Hoedown! Of course, it wasn’t 40 degrees either……..

I didn’t think this would have happened so fast, but there’s a new number one bomb. And Blake Shelton has two of the worst videos in the top 10 “Q’ Bomb list. What happened to all of the karma built up from “Honey Bee”…………………..
QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Worst Videos for the week of November 20, 2011

1. Footloose–Blake Shelton
2. Blood Pressure–Mutemath
3. Someone Like You–Adele
4. God Gave Me You–Blake Shelton
5. Remind Me—Brad Paisley with Carrie Underwood
6. Easy–Rascal Flatts with Natasha Bedingfield
7. It Girl–Jason Derulo
8. The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie–Red Hot Chili Peppers
9. You Make Me Feel–Cobra Starship and Sabi
10. Shake It Off–Florence + The Machine

1) “Footloose”—This is probably the only video out right now that could knock the awful Mutemath video from the top of my bad list…….
2) “Blood Pressure”—A reprieve for the moment. If this song does not do as well as it should, it’ll be because of this lousy video…………………..
3) “Someone Like You”—Adele actually looks better than Paris in this video… and that’s not easy to do.
4) “God Gave Me You”—Sentimental and sterile—not a good combination…
5) “Remind Me” —I’m losing interest in dissing this video. Please fall off…..
6) “Easy”— The bar was set pretty low for this video. Maybe they should have made it “harder”……………….
7) “It Girl”—My daughter says she doesn’t like this song because it sounds like something Justin Bieber would do. Need I say more……………………
8] “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie”—Something a video should never be—boring…………….
9) “You Make Me Feel”—I really don’t feel anything watching this video………….
10) “Shake It Off”—There’s a room full of people with masks on. A séance is taking place in another room. Florence, wearing a bright red dress appears to be possessed. Yeah. Whatever…………..

Phil’s Faves: Songs, November 13, 2011

Paul McCartney rises to the top dethroning Paul Bergeson! Hey, it’s happened to the best many times over the years! I think this Top Ten has a very good mixture of styles!
