The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “They Don’t Scare Me!” by Mickey Mouse and Goofy!!!

I have a feature to recognize a slice of good music: The Most Awesomest Song of the Day!

Here’s a link to the complete list: https://philmaq.com/most-awesomest-songs/

I want to emphasize mostly, relatively newer music, just like on my weekly “Theme Attic” show, Wednesdays, from 1PM-4PM ET!

But I can promise this: I will not force my selections. If something doesn’t hit me, I won’t post one.

Everything I do has always been about shining a spotlight on the artist and their music.

Now I will have the potential to shine 365 more spotlights if I want to!

One of the first group of songs that I wrote about in my blog was my favorite 13 Halloween Hauntings!

The posts are long in need of an upgrade.

They also deserve more attention!

Here’s my attempt to do both!

There are a lot of bad or repetitive children’s Halloween collections that are available (I won’t name names but most of them rhyme with “Drew’s”), so it would make perfect sense that Walt Disney Records has put out several good ones over the years.

My only complaint is that their releases are usually split equally between a handful of songs and sound effects.

I picked a song that I think is one of their best: “They Don’t Scare Me!”

It’s a duet between Mickey and a Dr. John sound alike. Mickey bravely stands up tall to all of the spooky things that his singing partner throws at him by chuckling that “They don’t scare me!” Behind all of this is a nice background of piano and backup singers done in a New Orleans swing style.

At the end, it is obvious that all of Mickey’s responses were actually a false front as the other singer drops out. And when he doesn’t respond, Mickey starts to sheepishly ask if that noise he’s hearing is Goofy. A spooky majestic organ

I think Mickey survived.)

Phil’s Faves: Albums, October 24, 2021

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my “Theme Attic Show,” Wednesdays 1PM-4PM ET on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves; Songs, October 24, 2021

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 1PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

Halloween looms closer, but there’s still several days to go.

At least seven artists will be from Southeast Michigan!!!
I’ll also include a weekly Top 9 at 2:09 Faves Song Countdown that will feature several worthy Halloween type entries!
Don’t worry. Most of the usual characters will materialize–in one form or another!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “Mr. Halloween” by The Brickbats!!!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Today’s choice is a frenetically rockin’ indie song bordering on punk or metal!

I don’t know anything about The Brickbats, but I can tell you that the song is from their“Monster Party” CD. It starts out with a nice tom-tom beat/shuffle intro and then kicks in to the verses. It has a lot of breaks and should be played LOUD!!!

I kind of like the thought about a character known as Mr. Halloween who goes around“dancing on unmarked graves.”

As I said before: PLAY IT LOUD!!!!!!!!!!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Mr. Halloween” by The Brickbats!!!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult!!! Plus “More Cowbell”!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 1PM-4PM ET.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Here’s a link to have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”: https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

To start off my “Halloween Hauntings,” I have picked a classic rock selection from the 70’s, “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult.

The song is very atmospheric, and uses dynamics to great effect.

Almost acting like a chorus, the hypnotic guitar riff finally gets the opportunity to explode for an extended solo in the middle instrumental section.

The words are very descriptive and visual as the reaper tries to seduce the maiden to go with him.

What better way to start the holiday list than with this gem!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded is “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult!!!

Oh, and before I go, I almost forgot to tell you, “I have a fever, baby. And the only  prescription is more cowbell!”

The song, of course, was immortalized with hilarious performances by Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken on a Saturday Night Live satire of VH1 Behind the Scenes!

And you know, you can never, ever, have enough cowbell!

It’s time for another salute to my favorite nighttime celestial orb!

“Moonlight” by Said the Whale from their “Cascadia” album, made a powserful impression on me the first time I heard it!

I was moonstruck! (Hee-hee!)

Weaving an hypnotic keyboard phrase along with multi layered harmonies over a dreamlike background throughout the chorus, I instantly bonded with a beautiful melodic tune!

In particular, the phrase reminds me of a similar one from the dungeon area soundtrack of the first Zelda adventure by Nintendo. It brought back memories of my young son calling it the ooh-de-larry song.

I could listen to “Moonlight” all night long and not lose interest in it!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Moonlight” by Said the Whale!!!
