Phil’s Faves: Songs, April 29, 2012

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Carrie Underwood tops both of my “fave” lists this week. And now the top six songs are the same on both lists! There’s also a couple of really songs about radio to round out the list…………………

Top Ten Songs for the Week of April 29, 2012

1. Good Girl—Carrie Underwood
2. Banjo—Rascal Flatts
3. Sweeter—Gavin DeGraw
4. Endless Love—Lionel Richie & Shania Twain
5. Dancin’ Away With My Heart—Lady Antebellum
6. Over You—Miranda Lambert
7. Ballad of a Thin Man—Arlen Roth (Levon Helms on Drums)
8. Who Listens to the Radio?—The Sports
9. Radio Radio—Elvis Costello & The Attractions
10. Money (That’s What I Want)—Josie & The Pussycats

1) “Good Girl”—The best “rock” song that Carrie Underwood has done so far!
2) “Banjo”—The second best “rock” song on the list this week!
3) “Sweeter”—It’s nice to have a “real” rock song represented here!
4) “Endless Love”—The best “pop” song on the country charts today!
5) “Over You”—This song would be #1 almost any other time if it were on a weak list!
6) “Dancin’ Away with My Heart”—I’m not sure if this one will be dancing away soon. It depends what comes along to knock it off………….
7) “Ballad of a Thin Man”—I heard this song on the day that Levon Helm passed away. It is a remake of a Bob Dylan song and it is GREAT! It is moody, atmospheric, and very tight! It is one of the best instrumentals I’ve heard in years!
8) “Who Listens to the Radio?”—This song is so much fun! The Sports came out at the height of the “new wave” movement. That explains the quirky vocals. It’s just a fun song about something I’ve been listening to all of my life!
9) “Radio Radio”—Another powerful blast of fun! The band sounds tight and that farfisa organ pulls everything through at breakneck speed! This might be my favorite Elvis Costello song! He sings that he “wants to bite the hand that feeds him.” He built his career on that philosophy and never depended upon commercial radio to make his living. Man that takes big uh, nerves!
10) “Money (That’s What I Want)”—I like this power pop version of the Barrett Strong song! It sounds good with a straight ahead rock beat!
