Phil’s Faves: Albums, January 14, 2024

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my “Theme Attic Show,” Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

There’s plenty of other musical things to browse!

A list that you might find interesting is my list for “The Most Awesomest Songs of the Day”: https://philmaq.com/most-awesomest-songs/!

If you’d like to know what I think are even better than the awesome songs, have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”:https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

My somewhat unusual Hall of Fame can be explored here: https://philmaq.com/hall-of-fame/!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, January 14, 2024

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

Winter Invades “Theme Attic” This Wednesday, 12PM-4PM EST!!!

Timing is everything, and I picked the winteriest weather in two years for Southeast Michigan to highlight music about it on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 12PM-4PM EST!!!
A Top 9 at 2:09 Countdown of this week’s Phil’s Faves Albums will give us a respite from the cold! (Or will it…………?)
There will also be a new Theme Attic Hall of Fame inductee this week: Fleetwood Mac!
Stats for this week’s show are ok, but have been obviously slowed down by the cold weather: 4 new artists, 3 new releases, 10 artists with Southeast Michigan ties, and 2 singles!
I will divide the tags into sections, but they will only be an estimate.
I can’t guarantee that everything will fit into those slots, but I will try very hard to stick to them!
However…they are NOT in sequential order. (I often make changes during the show!)
Songs by artists between 12PM-209 PM EST should include No More Blue Tomorrows (Their new album is in the banner!), Aaron Lee Tasjan, Sue Radner Horowitz, The Decemberists, Nanowar Of Steel with Madeleine Liljestam (Madeleine Liljestam) and ELEINE (Their album cover for “Dislike to False Metal” is in the banner!), Jaspar Lepak (Jaspar Lepak), The Rubinoos, Rob Kneisler (His album cover for “Lift Me Up” is in the banner!), Cary Morin (Cary Morin, Celeste Di Iorio Morin), The Regulators, and more!!!
Songs by artists from 2PM-4PM EST should include Kathy Johnson (Kathy’s “Small Town Girl” album cover is in the banner!), Joe Peters & Friends, Djangophonique, *Djangophonique are playing The Ark – Ann Arbor, Michigan on Friday, DIRK KROLL BAND (Dirk Kroll is playing DIRK KROLL BAND live! @ Trinity House Theatre in Livonia, Michigan this Saturday!), Jim Allchin, Billy Brandt and the Sugaree’s (Billy Brandt), Kathleen DeViewmusic, Donna Herula (Donna Herula), Carrie Westbay (Carrie Westbay), Tom Alter Music (Tom Alter), After Blue (Their “What Is Now, What Is Real” album cover is in the banner!)(Katie Williamson) John Finan (John Finan), Teenage Joans, Jon English (Jenny English), Uncle Bonsai, and more!!!
So, bundle up, hot beverages are allowed and recommended!), get a friend to listen with, and come along for Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” from 12PM-4PM EST with Phil Maq!!!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “New Year’s Eve Waltz” by Marty Kohn!!!

Free New Years Clip Art | New year clipart, Happy new year png, Happy new year pictures

I have a feature to recognize a slice of good music: The Most Awesomest Song of the Day!

Here’s a link to the complete list: https://philmaq.com/most-awesomest-songs/

I want to emphasize mostly, relatively newer music, just like on my weekly “Theme Attic” show, Wednesdays, from 12PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

If you’d like to know what I think are even better than the awesome songs, have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”:https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

But I can promise this: I will not force my selections. If something doesn’t hit me, I won’t post one.

Everything I do has always been about shining a spotlight on the artist and their music.

Now I will have the potential to shine 365 more spotlights if I want to!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

This year ends on a promising little tune–the title track from Marty Kohn’s New Year’s Eve Waltz album released a few months ago.

I’m not sure where the inspiration came from, but it is an ingenious song that takes the numerical calendar figures, 12-31-23, which, when the dashes are removed, turns out to be a waltz tempo: one two three, one two three!

It’s a once in a century occurrence!

And the narrator takes stock of his own faults in a resolutiony (I’m not sure if Marty, a former journalist, will appreciate this word!) kind of way!

He’s looking for forgiveness–not only for himself, but everybody, so that we can leave behind the mental weight of our past failures.

That way everyone starts out with a blank slate for the New Year!

The final verse contains the most important lines, as they are his wishes for the year that are both humble and equitable:

“May there be health and money/

Enough to get by/

Of love and affection/

On endless supply/

Then he moves on to large, altruistic wishes:

May there be no more hunger/

And be no more war/

And finally, a little honest hope for the future:

May we be here to see/

One two three, one two four!

Just beautiful!
