Phil’s Faves: Albums, July 23, 2023

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my “Theme Attic Show,” Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, July 23, 2023

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my show on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

The Sun Demands Attention…and Gets It on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic,” 12PM-4PM EDT!!!

It’s time for my annual visit with my frenemy–the sun.
He expects it, so I’m going to give him my attention on this Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 12PM-4PM EDT!!!
As with any of my annual shows, I have plenty of songs I have never played as part of my sun shows, but a few perennial favorites will return!
A couple of bonus features to today’s playlist is the Top 9 at 2:09 EDT Fave Albums Countdown, and a new Theme Attic Hall of Fame Inductee, The Jam, in hour number 2!!!
Stats are pretty good: 8 artist debuts, 8 new releases, 1 unreleased, 13 artists with Southeast Michigan ties, and 2 singles!
I will divide the tags into sections, but they will only be an estimate.
I can’t guarantee that everything will fit into those slots, but I will try very hard to stick to them!
However…they are NOT in chronological order. (I often make changes during the show!)
Songs by artists between 12PM-209 PM EDT should include Roger Ponder, Ten02 Music, hoTel, Future Cowboys, Flaming Lips, Babe Rainbow (Their album cover for “Fresh As a Head of Lettuce” is in the lower right corner of the banner!), Gary Browe, Adler & Hearne, Peach & Quiet, The Wag, Ben Levin Piano (Ben Levin, Aron Levin), Shaun Murphy, sparkle*jets u.k., The Joedai Warriors (Joe Peters & Friends), Coral Creek Music, and plenty more!!!
Songs by artists between 2:09PM-4PM EDT should include Ceolsige (Her self titled album cover is on the upper left of the banner! She is playing a Songwriter Scramble with Memphis Hawk and Tom Alter Wednesday, tonight, at Berkley Coffee & Oak Park Dry in Oak Park, Michigan!) ,(Kelsey Detering), The Wildwoods (They are playing The Ark – Ann Arbor, Michigan this Sunday!) (Chloe Pinkman Gose, Noah Gose), After Blue (Katie Williamson), John Barron and Rob Emanuel, Ilene Springer, Joedai Trobairitz and Troubadours with Christopher Gipson, Bill Price (His new album cover for “Kicking Angels” is third from the right in the banner!), The Belle Curves, Phil Lee, Judy Banker, The Flashcubes (Their soon to be released “Pop Masters” album cover is second from the left in the banner!, Big Stir Records), Mark Jewett Mark is playing in downtown Detroit, Michigan this Friday at noon!), Carolyn Striho (The Carolyn Striho Group returns to The Whitney Garden Party! on Thursday in Detroit, Michigan!), Wendy Webb, Declan McKenna (He is playing the The Majestic Wednesday, tonight!, in Detroit, Michigan!), Billy Brandt (Billy is playing Oak City Grille in Royal Oak, Michigan, Wednesday, tonight!), Phil Yates & The Affiliates, and more!!!
So, bring some sunscreen, get a friend to listen with, and come along for Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” from 12PM-4PM EDT with Phil Maq!!!
The STATION’S NEW ANTENNA AND TRANSMITTER MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO HEAR THE SHOW ALL OVER THE METRO DEARBORN-DETROIT AREA BY TUNING INTO 89.3 WHFR.FM!
However, you can also stream the show from the “listen live button” on the www.WHFR.FM website, by the TuneIn App, Simple Radio App, download the 89.3 WHFR.FM android app from our website homepage, or ask Alexa to find it for you!

What Does 2023 Look Like So Far?: Unofficial Philby Hot 100 Songs of 2022 Countdown #6!!!

The Philby Award

________________________________________________________

2023 is more than half over, and that makes me think of the Philby Best Albums of 2023.

Yes, I understand that I still haven’t completed the 2022 list yet.

True, but I always start the following year’s search on January 1st. The sheet lists get made and I start to work on them.

For me, it’s a constant process that never ends.

Having worked on an “official” list for a decade or so now, the pattern has pretty much stayed the same: About a month or two into the year, I run across an album that captures my ears and my heart as being something truly “special.”

I then lovingly place it at the top of my working list for that year, and see how it stands up as the year goes on.

It has happened every year so far.

As much as I am always hoping that I hear something even better, it hasn’t happened yet.

However, this year is way different.

More than halfway through the year, I have yet to hear that “special” album.

Now, I’m not knocking what I’ve listened to so far this year.

I have heard many stellar albums up to this point–possibly even more than any other year.

But I haven’t heard the one!

And I’m reaching my own, sort of, self imposed deadline where I start focusing on the ones that will be on the ’23 list.

I find it more difficult to whittle the list down when I have what I think are enough albums.

Now, I always keep determining whether a release should be allowed until December 31st.

But that album would more than likely knock another one off to then be considered for  next year’s list.

This may be a bunch of hooey to anyone reading this, but I’m just describing this observation of mine.

And that album may already be in my possession.

It just may not have revealed it’s “brilliance” yet.

Or……….

It may still be out there!

Here’s a section on submissions:

I am accepting entries for Philby consideration!

The album selections are made from a sliding four year pool of music.

The pool for 2023 is 2021-2024.

One of the reasons that I use a multiple year submission scale is that just getting music out to the world is sometimes difficult for an artist.

A lot of them are not really wired for self promotion.

Making music is totally different than drumming up interest in it, especially for independent musicians.

Yes, there are promoters that can help with that. And nothing against promoters because they have a role to play. But they cost money, and the artist already had to pay to record the music, and may not be prepared for the process of promoting it.

After looking at how some other independent awards are handled, I figured a four year window allows me enough time to serendipitously run across someone’s music.

I have told this story several times, but I try very hard to listen to everything that is submitted.

Although I work on my list, starting literally on January 1st, using a four year sliding window, I carry over some of what would qualify from the prior years.

So, if you’ve made some music dating back as far as 2019, I will accept that music for consideration.

If you have something older than 2019, send that, too, but identify the release date. I’m always looking for GREAT music.

For the Philbys, I’m looking for full albums.

However, if you only have a single, I’ll accept that, too. Don’t forget that I also have a Philby Hot Songs list, and more artists are releasing singles these days.

But please don’t send me an incomplete album if you have one.

So, please don’t edit for me.

I dislike that and I might not even check out the item. I don’t know why anyone would only send selected songs instead of their whole work of art for consideration.

Please don’t send me links to listen to music. That’s not how I listen to music.  And I probably won’t listen to it if you send me a link to stream it. Either send me the album to download or request my mailing address to send a physical copy.

Every year I say that if your item came out later than May, it may not end up on this year’s list. So it’s possible that submissions entered now may only be considered for 2021. (It sounds so good to think of 2020 being finished!)

However, this year will be totally different than other years. I have not received any where near the amount of releases that I normally do.

It might be an excellent year to send a submission.

I will accept any genre of music. I like a variety of styles, even on the same album!

So, please e-mail your mp3s, and please make sure it is an mp3 only, to phil@philmaq.com.

If you want a physical address or have other questions, please e-mail me at the same address. Because selections will be considered for more than a single year, there isn’t an expiration date at the present.

If you want someone who will actually listen to your music, I am that person.

If you want some recognition for working hard and baring your soul, that might be me, too. I can’t make any promises, but I will listen to your music.

If you are reading this and are not a musician but know someone who is, please forward this to them.

Good luck to all who participate!

Bugapalooza 2023, Colors, and Some Afternoon Jazz, Wednesday, 12PM-5:30PM EDT!!!

I have said it several times over the years, but although we think we have dominion over all of the earth’s creatures, the world actually belongs to its major inhabitors: bugs!

So, that just another way of saying it’s time for this year’s edition of “Bugapalooza” with host Phil Maq on this week’s “Theme Attic” on Wednesday, 12PM-5:30 PM EDT!!!
That’s right, I will be going until 5:30 today, shifting over to Jazz around 4PM, and a new Theme Attic Hall of Fame artist will be inducted during that part of the show: The Modern Jazz Quartet!
Since I have more themes than weeks this year, I will also be spicing things up with some songs that feature colors in honor of this weekend’s free Concert of Colors in Detroit, Michigan!
A Top 9 at 2:09 PM EDT album countdown will add to the fun!
Stats are pretty good: 6 artist debuts, 3 new releases, 1 unreleased, 16 artists with Southeast Michigan ties, 2 singles!
I will divide the tags into sections, but they will only be an estimate.
I can’t guarantee that everything will fit into those slots, but I will try very hard to stick to them!
However…they are NOT in chronological order. (I often make changes during the show!)
Songs by artists from 2:09PM-4PM EDT should include Tom Curless, The Belle Curves, Roger Ponder (His album cover for “Blues to Gray” is second from the left in the banner!), Barker & Broski (Michael Snyder-Barker, Chris Broski), Dog Latin (Chris McGorey), Voxanna (Their brand new self-titled album cover is in the center of the banner! Voxanna (Album Release Party) is Saturday at Berkley Coffee & Oak Park Dry in Oak Park, Michigan!)(Elaine Schoendorf), After Blue, The Wildwoods (Chloe Pinkman Gose), Phil Lee, The Accidentals, Grrrl Gang, Carolyn Wonderland (Her album cover for “Tempting Fate” is on the left corner of the banner!), Joe Peters & Friends, Joanie Leeds, Phil Yates & The Affiliates (Phil Yates), John Barron and Rob Emanuel, Ron Rosco Selley, Michael J. Miles, Negativland, Dog Sisters, and more!!!
I’ll post some artists for the jazz part of the show in the comments section!
So, bring some natural bug repellent, get a friend to listen with, and come along for Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” from 12PM-5:30 PM EDT with Phil Maq!!!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, July 9, 2023

Phil’s Faves: Songs, July 9, 2023

2023 Summer New Music Showcase #1 on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic,” 12PM-4PM EDT!!!

I’m in several Facebook groups that are music oriented.
Occasionally, there is a post to welcome new members.
Today’s 2023 Summer New Music Showcase #1 on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 12PM-4PM EDT is just that kind of show!
I typically bury this info later in the post, but I decided to follow the pattern that the Facebook groups do and put it right up front:
30 artist debuts, 32 new releases, 3 unreleased, 2 world premieres, 13 artists with Southeast Michigan ties, and 8 singles!!!
Welcome to the “club!”
And it is an eclectic batch of mostly new music!
Of course, as per tradition, everything else I play on the show I’ve never played before, thus making it “new,” too!
There will be a Top 9 at 2:09 EDT album countdown to add to the mix! (And a batch I refer to as “Older Music Rescue,” which is a group of songs and artists that I have “overlooked” for various reasons!)
I will divide the tags into sections, but they will only be an estimate.
I can’t guarantee that everything will fit into those slots, but I will try very hard to stick to them!
However…they are NOT in chronological order. (I often make changes during the show!)
Songs by artists between 12PM-209 PM EDT should include A Beacon School, Jess Williamson, Now Ghosts, Quantic Music with Andreya Triana, SUPER 8 Music (Their new album cover for “Hoopla” is on the top, second from the right in the banner!), Phony Ppl, Orions Belte, Innerlove., Abby K (Her album cover for “Where We’re At” is on the bottom, second from the right in the banner!),(Abby Karp) Dean Ford, John and Sheila Ludgate, Oberon Rose, Lanterns On The Lake, Billy The Kid & The Regulators, James and the Giants, B. B. & The Blues Shacks, . Byrd, AeB, Creep Show and John Grant (John Grant), Texas, and more!!!
Songs by artists between 2:09PM-4PM EDT should include Tom Curless & the 46% (Their new album “Speaking in Codes” is on the far right of the banner!), Voxanna (Elaine Schoendorf), Annie & Rod Capps (Their new album, “Love and Rain” is on the far left of the banner!), Bill Edwards, After Blue (Kate Hinote & the Disasters, Anthony Retka, and After Blue are playing Berkley Coffee & Oak Park Drive in Oak Park, Michigan this Friday!), Jc & The Disciples, Carolyn Striho and Erin Zindle (Their cover for “The Bridge” is third from the left in the banner!), Tom Curless, The Wildwoods (Chloe Pinkman Gose), Nick Z’s Boss Super Summer (Nick Zeigler), Mike Ward, Barker & Broski, Ilene Springer, Arthur Alexander (His album cover for “Steppin’ Out” is in the middle of the banner!)(Big Stir Records), Al Staehely (His album cover for “Somewhere in West Texas” is second from the left in the banner!) Phil Lee, Last Giant, Jennifer Cutting‘s Ocean Orchestra, and more!!!
So bring along some paper and a writing implement to jot down notes, get a friend to listen with, and come along for Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” from 12PM-4PM EDT with Phil Maq!!!
OUR NEW ANTENNA AND TRANSMITTER MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO HEAR THE SHOW ALL OVER THE METRO DEARBORN-DETROIT AREA BY TUNING INTO 89.3 WHFR.FM!
