Phil’s Faves: Albums, July 3, 2022

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my “Theme Attic Show,” Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, July 3, 2022

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

It’s the 21st Semi-Annual Theme Attic Hall of Fame Show, Wednesday, 12PM-4PM EDT!!!

The Semi-Annual Theme Attic Hall of Fame Show has come of age!
Er. Not really because it happens twice a year!
But that’s ok!
It’s one of two times I allow myself to roam through the archives of the legends in the Theme Attic Hall of Fame and it’s on Wednesday from 12PM-4PM EDT with host Phil Maq!!!
Since each show I do includes new music AND artist debuts, I will lay it out that the opener is Gordonville, USA, and the grand finale is by Victorius!!!
Everything in between will include a super wide variety of artists (one song only!) from The Kingston Trio to The Go-Go’s!
From The Mills Brothers, Mahalia Jackson and Mary Chapin Carpenter to Classic Rock artists like Steppenwolf – Band, Ten Years After – Band, Humble Pie, The Zombies, Carlos Santana, and a batch of classic Detroit rockers like The Frost, MC5, Savage Grace, SRC, and Iggy And The Stooges!!!
I like to dig deep so there might be plenty of songs you haven’t heard before, but there should be enough to keep any avid fan of the legends engaged!!!
So turn the lava lamp on, get a friend or two to listen or share with, and come along for the ride on this special show Wednesday from 12PM-4PM EDT with Phil Maq!
OUR NEW ANTENNA MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO HEAR THE SHOW ALL OVER THE METRO DEARBORN-DETROIT AREA BY TUNING INTO 89.3 WHFR.FM!
However, you can also stream the show from the “listen live button” on the www.WHFR.FM website, by the TuneIn App, Simple Radio App, download the 89.3 WHFR.FM android app from our website homepage, or ask Alexa to find it for you!

Summer and Chris Broski of Barker & Broski on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic,” 12PM-4PM EDT!!!

It’s the first full day of Summer!
It’s hot!
Yuccas are blooming! (My favorite flower!)
It’s just the right time to enjoy the start of the season on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 12PM-4PM EDT!!!
And the changing seasons seem to have created an opportunity to have talented-yet sometimes silly, Chris Broski to show up as a special guest!!!
It’s been almost three years since Michael Snyder-Barker and Broski, collaborating as Barker & Broski, unleashed the then unknown character and legend, “Billy Bob,” on an unsuspecting and naive music world!
Since then, another album, “The Legend of Billy Bob, Sr.” was released last year. (Or was it the year before? Time is distorted in a pandemic world!)
And not to fret, a new collection of songs has appeared as, “The Coal Country Heartbreakers!”
Huh?
I have to think Billy Bob has some connection.
But maybe not.
Either way, Chris will be here to present the brand new material!
Will he answer all questions, or just create more?
Tune in after 3PM EDT to find out!
There will also be a “Top 9 at 2:09” weekly album countdown!
Stats for the week: 4 artist debuts, 8 new to newish releases, 14 artists with Southeast Michigan ties!!!
I will divide the tags into sections, but they will only be an estimate. I can’t guarantee that everything will fit into those slots, but I will try very hard to stick to them!
Songs by artists between 12PM-2:09PM should include Annie & Rod Capps (Happy Birthday Annie Capps!), Bob Hausler, Roger Ponder, Annie Fitzgerald (Annie Fitzgerald), The Chills, Janie Next Door – Jane Christison (Jane Christison), brand new Christopher Shayne, Ron St.Germain Music (Ron St Germain), Bobby Pennock (He’s playing YpsiAlehouse in Ypsilanti with Michael Snyder-Barker on Saturday, June 25), Carl Caballero and The Wreckage (Carl Caballero), John Holk & the Sequins (John Holkeboer) (playing “Top of the Park” in Ann Arbor today!), brand new Muruga Cosmic Boogie (They are playing The Token Lounge in Westland this Sunday, June 26), DAVY KNOWLES (He is playing The Token Lounge in Westland on Saturday, June 25!), Matt Harlan (Matt Harlan) with Rachel Jones, Elliot Schneider, Brady Clampitt (Brady Clampitt), brand new Ben Harper, Jehova Waitresses, and more!!!
Songs from 2:09-3:00 EDT should include Tom Alter Music (Tom Alter), The Forty Nineteens, Donna Herula (Donna Herula), Bill Edwards, The Joedai Warriors (Joe Peters & Friends, Joe Peters), The Armoires, Matthew French, Rod Johnson (Rod Johnson), Jay Elle, and Marty (Martin Kohn) and Laura Kohn!!!
From 3PM-4PM EDT will be the aforementioned Barker & Broski, as well as brand new Cave In!!!
So grab some sunscreen and a water bottle, get a friend or two to listen or share with, and come along for the ride on this special show Wednesday from 12PM-4PM EDT with Phil Maq!

Phil Maq Gets Interviewed (It Includes an Eggheads Reference!) on Barker & Broski’s “Making It Small in Music!!!

Making it Small in Music

Several months ago, I got together with Michael Snyder-Barker and Chris Broski–two guys that perform together as the duo, Barker & Broski. (Michael also performs solo and as other performing entities.)

They also do a podcast called, “Making It Small in Music!” It’s a show to focus on musicians and others who are adjacent to the music business, a somewhat amusing platform to pass on info to those in similar situations.

Now, I understand that I easily fit according to the title–not by weight class, but I hesitated to do the show. I’m actually a fairly private person and I’m comfortable asking the questions–not answering the questions!

Well, after some thought, I decided to allow Barker & Broski to have at it with me.

They were very professional and it was a pleasant time!

They were even very patient when I rambled on for awhile, which seemed to happen frequently.

I agreed to do it, because I felt that if my words could help someone else making it small, then it was worth doing!

Somewhere in the interview, I brought up a Beatles sound alike band called, The Eggheads. They’re a band that is etched in my memory, yet I can barely find a mention of them.

As luck would have it, the concersation motivated me to do a search and I found not 1, but 2 clips of The Eggheads!

This was like hitting a mother lode for me!

Regardless, if you listen to the intderview, you will hear a couple of quirky things that affected how I turned out!

This is the promo blurb I wrote for the episode:

This month Mike and Chris talk with Phil Maq, host of “Theme Attic,” a radio show on Wednesdays from 12PM-4PM ET. It can be heard at WHFR, 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Metro Detroit area, or streamed in the rest of the world https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/. We learn about Phil’s lifelong love of music, radio, and songs—both appreciating others as well as making his own. We also ponder other musical conundrums: How long should songs be?, Are there correct chord progressions?, Are drummers actually musicians? Those are just a few of the fun loving stories you’ll hear on this episode!
