The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “Slow Down the Moon” by Bill Edwards!!!

I have a feature to recognize a slice of good music: The Most Awesomest Song of the Day!

Here’s a link to the complete list: https://philmaq.com/most-awesomest-songs/

I want to emphasize mostly, relatively newer music, just like on my weekly “Theme Attic” show, Wednesdays, from 12PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

If you’d like to know what I think are even better than the awesome songs, have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”:https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

But I can promise this: I will not force my selections. If something doesn’t hit me, I won’t post one.

Everything I do has always been about shining a spotlight on the artist and their music.

Now I will have the potential to shine 365 more spotlights if I want to!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

This month’s Full Moon Tune, “Slow Down the Moon”  is just a small slice taken from a thirty song album written by Ann Arbor’s prolific singer/songwriter, Bill Edwards!

Not only does“Whole Cloth,” showcase Bill’s impressive and varied writing talents, he also played and recorded everything within the album!

It’s DIY to the nth degree, yet it sounds as sharp and polished as anything he’s recorded!

“Slow Down the Moon” is a song about a faltering relationship.

Like many of us, we look up at the nighttime sky and see that familiar shining orb and start to think of it as a friend.

The singer desperately feels that if he could just slow down that heavenly object, then he might be able to save the relationship.

However, we also know that’s impossible and the singer sadly needs a different strategy.

And a person has about the same chance of slowing down the moon as they do slowing down Bill Edwards’ songwriting pace!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Slow Down the Moon” by Bill Edwards!!!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, March 13, 2022

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my show on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

St. Patrick vs. Le Nain Rouge on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic,” 12PM-4PM EDT!!!

It was going to be only a St. Patrick’s Day show.
Then, thankfully, something popped into my brain about the Marche du Nain Rouge.
That’s the party that the people of French heritage of the Detroit area celebrate to chase away the evil spirit of the red dwarf. He is historically blamed for all of the bad things that have happened in Detroit from fires to bad politicians.
It’s the city’s own version of a Matdi Gras experience!
Two party celebrations in the same week?
That made it kinda easy for this week’s St. Patrick vs. Le Nain Rouge show on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 12PM-4PM EDT!!!
Gee, I wonder who’s going to win?
Some of the music even has some similarities and sometimes it’s even difficult to tell the difference!
However, there will be a nice variety of musical styles…because I can’t help myself!
But there will be a heaping helping of Irish/Celtic music!
There will be a “Top 9 at 2:09 Countdown of weekly Fave Albums!
And Fairport Convention Band gets inducted into the “Theme Attic Hall of Fame!”
The stats for this week are: 11 artist debuts, 11 new releases, 9 artists with Southeast Michigan ties!!!
Times for the artists on the playlist will be divided into two blocks and are only approximate. They are a mostly educated guess and they are not in sequential order.
Artists who have a song played between 12PM-2:09PM EDT should include Nell & Jim Band, The Corrs – Official page, Katherine Moller, brand new Trip McCool & The Old School (His album cover for “A Happy Old Man” is on the far left of the banner!), Skinny Lister, Ariane Lydon, brand new Beowulf Kingsley (His album cover for “The Word from the Swamp” is second from the left in the banner!), Strawbs, brand new David Lockwood, brand new Rose & The Bros, Tommy Sands, Jo Philby, Jay Stott, Ray Cashman, The Milligan Vaughan Project, The West Coast Feed, brand new Le Vent du Nord (Their album cover for “20 Printemps” is in the middle of the banner!), Fairport Convention Band, The Marcus King Band, Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers fan group, Gina Forsyth, brand new Search and Seizure, Adam Nordell and Johanna Davis, and more!!!
So grab your dancing shoes, a four leaf clover, and a fleur de lis, a friend or two to listen with, and come along for the ride Wednesday from 12PM-4PM EDT with Phil Maq!
OUR NEW ANTENNA MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO HEAR THE SHOW ALL OVER THE METRO DEARBORN-DETROIT AREA BY TUNING INTO 89.3 FM!!!
However, you can also stream the show from the “listen live button” on the www.WHFR.FM website, by the TuneIn App, download the 89.3 WHFR.FM android app from our website homepage, or ask Alexa to find it for you!
Here’s special halftheworld link to stream it : https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!!!

Where Have All the Philbys Gone?; Unofficial Philby Hot 100 Songs of 2021 #4!!!

The Philby Award

I haven’t posted anything about the Philbys in more than five weeks.

What’s that about?

Well, if one has been following along, I have decided to pay more attention to Themes this year!

Theme Attic” with host Phil Maq is a weekly radio show on  Wednesdays from            12PM-4PM ET!!!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

I feel pretty confident that the Philbys will return in April, but the date is still undecided.

When they return, the Philby shows will be every other week.

Since there are still six Philby shows remaining, those shows will take at least three months to complete.

I kinda like that!

As I’ve always stated, I’m not in to time.

But I’m very much into great music, and there will be plenty of great music each week until their completed…and then beyond!!!

Until then, I still think that I will give updates in groups of ten.

The updates will only appear once in a week, when they do appear and I personally have plenty on my plate. .

I would also like to state again that unless a song has appeared on a weekly Faves list, it will NOT show up on the final songs list.

I will also provide submission info at the end of each one of these updates!

Here’s a section on submissions:

I am accepting entries for Philby consideration!

The album selections are made from a sliding four year pool of music.

The pool for 2022 is 2019-2022.

One of the reasons that I use a multiple year submission scale is that just getting music out to the world is sometimes difficult for an artist.

A lot of them are not really wired for self promotion.

Making music is totally different than drumming up interest in it, especially for independent musicians.

Yes, there are promoters that can help with that. And nothing against promoters because they have a role to play. But they cost money, and the artist already had to pay to record the music, and may not be prepared for the process of promoting it.

After looking at how some other independent awards are handled, I figured a four year window allows me enough time to serendipitously run across someone’s music.

I have told this story several times, but I try very hard to listen to everything that is submitted.

Although I work on my list, starting literally on January 1st, using a four year sliding window, I carry over some of what would qualify from the prior years.

So, if you’ve made some music dating back as far as 2018, I will accept that music for consideration.

If you have something older than 2018, send that, too, but identify the release date. I’m always looking for GREAT music.

For the Philbys, I’m looking for full albums.

However, if you only have a single, I’ll accept that, too. Don’t forget that I also have a Philby Hot Songs list, and more artists are releasing singles these days.

But please don’t send me an incomplete album if you have one.

So, please don’t edit for me.

I dislike that and I might not even check out the item. I don’t know why anyone would only send selected songs instead of their whole work of art for consideration.

Please don’t send me links to listen to music. That’s not how I listen to music.  And I probably won’t listen to it if you send me a link to stream it. Either send me the album to download or request my mailing address to send a physical copy.

Every year I say that if your item came out later than May, it may not end up on this year’s list. So it’s possible that submissions entered now may only be considered for 2021. (It sounds so good to think of 2020 being finished!)

However, this year will be totally different than other years. I have not received any where near the amount of releases that I normally do.

It might be an excellent year to send a submission.

I will accept any genre of music. I like a variety of styles, even on the same album!

So, please e-mail your mp3s, and please make sure it is an mp3 only, to phil@philmaq.com.

If you want a physical address or have other questions, please e-mail me at the same address. Because selections will be considered for more than a single year, there isn’t an expiration date at the present.

If you want someone who will actually listen to your music, I am that person.

If you want some recognition for working hard and baring your soul, that might be me, too. I can’t make any promises, but I will listen to your music.

If you are reading this and are not a musician but know someone who is, please forward this to them.

Good luck to all who participate!

Phil’s Faves; Albums, March 6, 2022

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my “Theme Attic Show,” Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

One of The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Beautiful” by Karyn Oliver!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Here’s a link to have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”: https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

Today’s song is by Karyn Oliver from her 2019 Philby Award winning album, “A List of Names.”

Not only can she write powerful, melodic songs, but she can sing them in a way that can transport you to a celestial world!

She was my pick for “Best Female Vocals of 2019!”

“Beautiful” closes “A List of Names,” and Karyn saves the best for last, on an album full of “bests!”

I would never claim to know what a woman thinks (or anybody else) but I do try to pay attention. I feel this song speaks to all women, telling each and every one of them to never settle for anything, unless it’s what they want–not what someone else wants.

And that they’re Beautiful!

She sings it over and over, because it’s true!

Although it’s directed to empower women and boost self esteem, there are enough universals in the lyrics for anyone to pick up on the image building aspects of the song!

The arrangement is “beautiful,” too, featuring Jon Shain and FJ Ventre (who both make great music as a separate duo!), Doug Hammer, Kaitlin Grady, Jim Roberts, and                    Tom Prasado-Rao.

And as great as the arrangement is, Karyn Oliver‘s incredible vocal takes the song to a level that I’ve rarely ever heard…and enjoyed!

There are a few amazing singers out there that can do astounding vocal acrobatics, but it’s not always enjoyable. I can appreciate the vocals, but I don’t always like them.

Karyn‘s vocals go directly to my soul!

Now I don’t know this as a fact, but I’m pretty sure all of those exotic songbird trills were never written down! They couldn’t be! That is what makes the vocal so unbelievable!

And just as the song appears to be settling into a pattern, Karyn finds another gear and kicks things up even higher!

I finally figured out the best way to describe her vocal: She’s what angels sing along to when they’re warming up to sing!

So, from her soul to yours, The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Beautiful” by Karyn Oliver!!!

Chills, Baby!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, February 27, 2022

Phil’s Faves: Albums, February 27, 2022
