Phil’s Faves: Videos, July 1, 2012

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best videos currently available on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus mostly on current or recent videos. For this category, I am also going to include any live performances on talk or variety shows that I see during the week.

“Pontoon” lazily goes for a second spin around the lake while resting at the top!

Top 10 Videos and Performances for the week of July 1, 2012

1. Pontoon—Little Big Town
2. Angel Eyes—Love and Theft
3. Give Your Heart a Break—Demi Lovato
4. Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck—Kip Moore
5. (Kissed You) Good Night—Gloriana
6. Banjo—Rascal Flatts
7. FRONT ROW CENTER: T-Bone Burnett Presents: The Secret Sisters with Elvis Costello and Jakob Dylan
8. Wide Awake—Katy Perry
9. Call Me Maybe—Carly Rae Jepsen
10. Lights—Ellie Goulding

1) “Pontoon”—This Little Big Town video and song were just made for floating lazily around a lake on a sunny summer afternoon!
2) “Angel Eyes”—Half of the reason I like this Love and Theft video is that there’s Just a little bit of devil/In those angel eyes!
3) “Give Your Heart a Break”Demi Lovato even looks good in this video! I wish her good luck! Maybe her past is finally behind her.
4) “Somethin’ ‘Bout a Truck”—I guess the timing on this Kip Moore video has everything to do with summer fun!
5) “(Kissed You) Good Night”—I’m not sure but I might like the song better than the video of Gloriana’s latest hit….
6) “Banjo”—I think Rascal Flatts is poised to fall off. So long old friend. I will miss you……….
7) “FRONT ROW CENTER: T-Bone Burnett Presents: The Secret Sisters with Elvis Costello and Jakob Dylan”—I was fascinated watching this PBS show! The Secret Sisters, with their Everly Brothers’ type harmonies, come off as such a naïve and retro innocent throwback to a time when Ricky Nelson ruled the TV musical airwaves every week. The Elvis Costello and Jakob Dylan segments complemented T-Bone Burnett’s packaging of the sisters.
8) “Wide Awake”Katy Perry reappears with this semi-autobiographical video with “Alice in Wonderland” and other fairytale references. It’s good!
9) “Call Me Maybe”—Sorry Carly Rae, but your vid time will soon be up for this one…
10) “Lights”—#1 on VH1 after such a long road to the top. Very good, Ellie!
