One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “For All We Know” by The Carpenters!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

It will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

I have always done two “Semi-Annual Theme Attic Hall of Fame Shows” a year on my Monday night show, “Prime Time Theme Attic.” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu )

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

On days that I spotlight a greatest song, it will take the place of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey…at least sometimes!

It took me a little while to warm up to The Carpenters.

The summer of “(They Long To Be) Close to You” was rough!

I felt the radio was purposely trying to torture me.

Then came “We’ve Only Just Begun.” I grew to like that one because at least it was up tempo.

So, my opinion was changing, with each radio play chipping away at my resistance.

It wasn’t until “For All We Know” that I fell for Karen Carpenter.

I can’t remember if I ever saw her before on TV, but I do remember seeing her in the video clip I’m posting.

It may be from The Dean Martin Show. That part I don’t exactly remember. All I know is that it was on a 10 PM variety show, and Dean was in that time slot.

I know I’d heard the song on the radio first. Once again, I wasn’t exactly sold on it.

But then I saw her.

She was sitting behind a beautiful large drum set!

Since I don’t remember ever seeing a female drummer before, this was stereotype shattering!

And…and…and she wasn’t even playing that beautiful set with all of those toms!

She was just…sitting there! Just keeping time with the bass drum and hi hat!

I had grown up watching Keith Moon of The Who smashing his drums (You animal!), and Carmen Appice pounding his drums to death!

Sitting and not playing on the drums was core value shattering!

I found out later that Karen was phenomenal on those drums!

And that voice! Singing like the most beautiful songbird I would ever hear!

And the harmonies!

The strings!

The piano trills by Richard Carpenter!

The oboes!

The voice and…that hair! I always thought she was older because her voice sounded older, and the style of music The Carpenters played.

I’m sure I felt weak at the knees with this heady experience!

If it was a cartoon, Cupid would have shot me in my heart!

The song was only two and a half minutes long, but I had another life changing event in those moments!

I eventually grew to like “Close to You,” especially once I saw Karen sing it. That doesn’t always happen with songs I don’t initially like.

I became a forever fan! I feel lucky that I was able to see them live three times!
