One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Cindy’s Birthday” by Johnny Crawford!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

How about a little Teenage Texas Twistin’ Tremolo Twang?

This is another story from when I was a kid.

I have a younger sister named Cindi.

One morning, while I was sleeping, I was awakened by my older sister blasting out “Cindy’s Birthday” by Johnny Crawford from his “A Young Man’s Fancy” album.

Johnny was a teenage TV idol who starred with Chuck Connors in the western, “The Rifleman.”

I had never heard the song before, but now I was being subjected to it being played over and over much like the Father’s Day story of Paul Petersen’s “My Dad.”

One thing that really bothered me, and I wouldn’t have known how to explain this at the time, was that the hole punch of the Del-Fi Record was just a touch off center, distorting the sound. Even then, I was aware of little technical things like that.

Regardless of that fact, “Cindy’s Birthday” was ingrained in my brain.

And that wasn’t a bad thing.

The song, although dated, has quite a bit going on within it.

Because Johnny needs to “write a symphony,” there is a truly wonderful string arrangement that is also used as a rare string instrumental break, that then shifts into a key change! It splits the song into halves!

The break includes some cascading guitar notes that make this section sound like a guitar concerto!

There is also a tympani drum that is used repeatedly for a nice effect.

Nice multi tracked lead and harmony vocals round out a fairly nice pop nugget!

And, hey! Today is Cindi’s Birthday!
