One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Take It Easy” by Savoy Brown!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

It will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

My radio show, “Prime Time Theme Attic,”  is on Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET but is on hiatus because of the pandemic.

Here’s the link for when the show returns: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu )

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey…at least sometimes!

Today is my wife’s birthday, so I thought I would go with a song that she likes, too.

I’ve stuck with Savoy Brown through its many roster changes.

Let’s face it, they are still bluesing after 55 years, and have won numerous awards including multiple Philbys!

Several years ago, my wife was feeling stressed about her work situation, or school, or both. I don’t really remember what was causing her anxiety.

I do remember that I suggested she listen to some music to calm down.

She asked me how that was going to help her. “How could music possibly settle my nerves?”

So I pulled out my vinyl copy of “Looking In” by Savoy Brown–which DOES NOT have a relaxing cover!, and dropped the needle down on side 2.

“Take It Easy” was the track I was looking for, a very slow, easy going blues.

It sounds like the kind of blues song that singer Perry Como might have done if he sold his soul to the devil.

Not really!

I just couldn’t resist saying that because “Take It Easy” is very “mellow” which he was known for!

There are plenty of breaks for guitarist Kim Simmonds to slip some quiet riffs in between lyrics, as well as a really nice solo!

Tone Stevens plays some melodic bass.

He and Roger Earl keep the song from totally falling apart, although there is no rush to get to the end.

The chorus keep repeating:

So take it easy baby/
There ain’t no need to worry/
The world won’t end tonight/
So tell me what’s the hurry?

The lyrics give plenty of positive examples that things will get done or happen without the extra stress.

Of course, “Take It Easy” is also one of the great seduction songs!

It works on many levels!

And it ends with Lonesome Dave almost whispering, “Take it easy, baby” several times as the song ends.

For a long time, it was my wife’s “go to” song when the walls seemed to be closing in.

If you don’t know it, I thought you should!
