The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “Rage, Remorse, and Reconciliation” by Territorial Chant!!!

Here’s a link to the complete list: https://philmaq.com/most-awesomest-songs/

I want to emphasize mostly, relatively newer music, just like on my Monday night show, “Prime Time Theme Attic.” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu )

But I can promise this: I will not force my selections. If something doesn’t hit me, I won’t post one.

Everything I do has always been about shining a spotlight on the artist and their music.

Now I will have the potential to shine 365 more spotlights if I want to!

Please share the post to help spread the word!

Regardless of everything going on in the world that is way more important than my daily post, I will continue, nonetheless, in case someone is looking for a few minutes of respite.

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Several years ago, I came up with an idea to celebrate Sweetest Day.

You know Sweetest Day: That extra Valentine ish Day where everyone is supposed to remember their significant other with some type of gesture, usually chocolates.

I’m not really a fan because I don’t like forced calendar holidays, even though I have participated in many myself. I mean, I’m not that stupid!

I just think it shouldn’t be mandatory, and it should be something that both parties do.

So, what does this have to do with music?

Well, I decided to call this annual show of mine a “Suitest Day” Show!

Rather than having a show similar to the Valentine’s Day one with an overdose of love songs, I wanted to emphasize some of the more creative and lengthy works of art at least one time a year.

A lot of time those works might be called a “suite,” but it didn’t have to be specifically called one.

And, of course, there would be a few “sweet” songs, too, for the official day.

Thus, that was the setup for “The Suitest Day Show.”

And on said show, I might play a song like today’s selection from Detroit area prog/rock Philby Award winning artists Territorial Chant, from their Territorial Chant 6album.

“Rage, Remorse, and Reconciliation” has all of the classic prog elements: creative arrangements, shifting rhythms, synthesizers, and plenty of space to spread out!

I particularly like the driving synth section, along with the dramatic vocals and big ending!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Rage, Remorse, and Reconciliation” by Territorial Chant!!!

Happy Suitest Day!

One of the Greatest Songs of All Time: “Dialogue (1 & 2)” by Chicago!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

It will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

My radio show, “Prime Time Theme Attic,”  is on Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET but is on hiatus because of the pandemic.

Here’s the link for when the show returns: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu )

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey…at least sometimes!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Every election, I would play “Dialogue (1 & 2)” by Chicago from their “Chicago V” album as my finale!

Featuring a conversation between a politically aware person sung by Terry Kath, and a naïve moronic college student voiced by Peter Cetera, the song was released in the heightened political world of 1972, when a vote by a young person could literally mean the difference between life and death with the Vietnam War still at peak engagement.

Terry’s character feels empathy for every injustice in the world:

   “Don’t it make you angry
The way war is dragging on?

and

Don’t you ever see the starvation/
In the city where you live,
All the needless hunger/
All the needless pain?”

Peter’s mind numbing, vapid responses center on his disconnection from the real world, and just trusts in the President-Nixon at the time:

“…the campus here is very, very free.

Well, I hope the President knows what he’s into,

I don’t know.
Oh, I just don’t know.”

I see “Dialogue’s”  theme alive and well today. The wrong thing to do is to blindly trust the President–any President. Or any person in power who continuously lies to you!

So many people on Facebook would rather avoid politics and think that, “everything is fine.”

How many times do you see “No politics.” “No covid.” “Pick a color”?

If you don’t want to talk about politics now, prior to an election, when would you?

Back to the song.

The next section of the conversation feels awkward, but maybe it was planned that way.

I can’t believe that Terry’s character would just drop the discussion after singing about it so passionately.

But he must have come to the conclusion, as in real life, that there wasn’t going to be a meeting of the minds, or that the conversation wasn’t worth continuing.

Then follows some nice, building instrumental sections where Terry Kath does a fine guitar solo as only he could do!

The horns kick in several times!

Danny Seraphine keeps driving everyone forward with his drumming!

“Dialogue 2” provides some worthy, positive, action phrases!:

“We can make it better!

We can change the world now!

We can save the children!

We can make it happen!”

The song slows and then breaks down completely into a harmonic, almost gospel, acapella section.

“Dialogue” ends on repeating the line, “We can make it happen!”

In fact, it stops in the middle of the word at “hap.”

This is fascinating!

And unusual!

I’m not sure if it was an editing mistake, and the band liked it, or if they decided to leave it up to the listener to “pick up the baton.”

Or maybe the causes need to carry on because they never can finish, or don’t always finish the way you want them to no matter how hard you try.

Regardless, the break off is both wonderful…and annoying!

I always like to believe that we can change the world and make thing better!

The song isn’t perfect, but it’s great!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded is “Dialogue (1 & 2)” by Chicago!!!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, October 11, 2020

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

(Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu)) on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Hand claps seem to have my attention recently, so I’ve chosen another song that has some.

But this time, the claps support a wicked guitar riff that sticks to the brain like Velcro!

“Can’t Go On Like This” by Folk/Rock duo Native Harrow (Devin Tuel and Stephen Harms) from last year’s “Happier Now” album, provides a wistful distraction on having to face adult responsibilities.

It was a fairly warm day today, so here’s a song that has a warm weather feel!

From his “Simple Life” album, singer/songwriter Nick Carter’s “Renegade Heart” gives a guy some love advice about his wandering girlfriend.

What takes the song above the normal cliché broken heart tune, are the Cajun fiddle, accordion, and upbeat rhythm!

Hand claps and a catchy sing-a-long chorus make you want to lose your dancing inhibitions!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, October 11, 2020

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Prime Time Theme Attic,” currently on hiatus. (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET)

I have another fitting Sunday Song!

Today’s selection is by Southeast Michigan’s Philby Award winning artists, Dave Boutette and Kristi Lynn Davis from their “Easy As Pie” album!

“Say a Prayer” is a full bore folkie toe tapper that features all of the elements that make a classic Folk song!

Tight harmonies from the ever masculine Dave Boutette and the always fetching Kristi Lynn Davis make the song even better!

It’s actually good for any day listening and might motivate you to say your own silent prayer of gratitude!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Heart Stops Beating” by Nick Piunti!!!

Detroit area and multi Philby Award winning artist, Nick Piunti, has been making pop/rock gems for many years now!

“Heart Stops Beating” from his “Beyond the Static” album is one of his best!

From the muted string guitar intro, to the thumping bass drum simulated heartbeat as the song ends, the song winds its way through a broken romance tale where the woman has her fingers around some poor guy’s heart.

It’s a tale full of crashing cymbals and loads of hand claps!

“Heart” has a catchy melody with a great sing-a-long call and response chorus!

My favorite section is the instrumental keyboards break!

The phrase is just fine on its own, but it gets a harmony line on the second pass through, and lifts the solo and the song to a higher level!

The song is arranged so well that it becomes a perfect piece of art!

I love it!

Eventually, even I have to admit that Summer is leaving.

There is that short stretch of colorful leaves against a beautiful azure sky that reduces the sting of colder temperatures.

However, that joyful experience is offset by having to rake up said colorful leaves.

Since I have absolutely zero control over any of these processes, I have decided to enjoy what I can about transitioning seasons, and that would mean, of course, the music!

Every year, I always try to play “The Leaves Are Changin'” by multiple Philby Award winner Lindsay Lou, nee Lindsay Lou and the Flatbellys, from their, “Release Your Shrouds!” album, as often as I can!

It’s a song that she wrote as a teacher to entertain her students.

Lindsay Lou likes to tell the story about how the kids would laugh at the line where she mentions “mother nature in her underwear!”

Yeah, that is a funny line!

It always got a chuckle out of my deceased mother-in-law, Helen!

And I almost always smile myself!

It’s a “feel good” song for me as we head towards Winter!

There isn’t a studio version of the song on youtube, but here’s Lindsay Lou and her husband Joshua Rilko performing as a cute duet!

This one goes out to Helen!
