For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

It will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

I haven’t seen too many mosquitoes this year, but I think they’re just getting started.

I certainly have plenty of memories of them.

Like that time my family and I took the trolley to Tahquamenon Falls in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

I am not a fan of using bug spray, especially on the kids.

By the time we got off the ride to walk to the falls, the floor of the trolley must have had an 1/8 of an inch of dead mosquitoes. It’s a fond memory in my family!

Another time, we were hiking in the Ouchita Mountains of Arkansas.

The skeeters were getting very heavy as we ventured into a dense forest area.

However, I was the only one getting bitten.

I was getting frustrated and I finally said something about it.

My son, who was only three, remembers what I said to this day:

“I guess the mosquitoes are finding me to be a tasty meal!”

It was very British sounding and my son found this to be quite hilarious!

Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights have the perfect song for a swatting summer night!

I’ve played Joanie for as long as I’ve been doing radio. She is a multiple Philby Award winner, and is one of my favorite vocalists!

She also has a catalog of great music, and has written children books!

Joanie is categorized as a “Kindie” artist, which is the generic name for music made for children.

Well, the music may be made for young listeners or the young at heart, however, her approach to it is anything but childlike!

From her superb “What a Zoo!” album, Joanie lays down in the lyrics what we probably all feel about a pretty annoying insect.

A nice rock beat, plenty of hand claps (when they’re not swatting bugs), and a melody that is pretty hard to get out of your noggin!

Opossum plays some pretty mean drums, and Skeeto is pretty good on the keyboards, too!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Mosquitoes” by ” Joanie Leeds and The Nightlights!!!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, August 23, 2020

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Prime Time Theme Attic,” currently on hiatus. (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET)

(Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu)

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

“Firefly” by Southern Culture on the Skids is one song that everybody in my family likes!

“Firefly” is one song that pretty much anyone I play it for likes!

This is one song that I myself liked the first time I heard it–a rarity!

I play this song several times every summer, sometimes many times in a row, and it never grows old!

From the album “Dirt Track Date,” the song takes off from the opening riff and doesn’t stop until the surprise ending!

The setting is a dark moonless night and potential hookup chances with a couple of “ugly girls.”

The twangy guitars combine with choppy, swampy drumming (Yes! I’ve never said that before!), to provide an infectious drumbeat that preachers have been warning us about for decades, because it makes you want to dance and move along and “do things!”

When the singer asks said firefly to shed some of its bioluminescence onto the situation so he can see, “Firefly” brightens into a fun chorus!

We  all sing along!

“I say firefly won’t you shine some light/

Firefly!

Let me see what’s happening tonight/

Firefly!

Firefly won’t you shine some light/

Firefly!

Let me see what’s happening tonight”

Just as an aside, I find it interesting that the singer is asking for help on a romantic encounter from a bug that uses its light for mating.

I have seen a lot of fireflies this summer!

The crashing cymbals sound amazing!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “Sunday Ferry” by Coral Creek!!!

Here’s a link to the complete list: https://philmaq.com/most-awesomest-songs/

I want to emphasize mostly, relatively newer music, just like on my Monday night show, “Prime Time Theme Attic.” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu )

But I can promise this: I will not force my selections. If something doesn’t hit me, I won’t post one.

Everything I do has always been about shining a spotlight on the artist and their music.

Now I will have the potential to shine 365 more spotlights if I want to!

Please share the post to help spread the word!

Regardless of everything going on in the world that is way more important than my daily post, I will continue, nonetheless, in case someone is looking for a few minutes of respite.

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

It’s time for a Sunday Song…and maybe catch a ferry!

Coral Creek are a multi-faceted band centered in Colorado.

They are able to live in several styles of music and do all of them well!

The thing that confuses me about “Sunday Ferry” from their “Free Dog” album released last year, is I can’t thing of a single one for the times I’ve been to Colorado.

So, I’m going to guess that maybe the band was on tour in the Seattle area, which has the best ferries I’ve ever been on, and wrote a song about it.

No matter the reason, I have enjoyed every one I’ve been on, and riding one on a Sunday excursion is a fine way to spend the day!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Music on the Wind” by Suzy Bogguss!!!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

It’s the perfect time to listen to “Music on the Wind” by Theme Attic Hall of Fame member and multiple Philby Award winning artist, Suzy Bogguss!

A little breeze would be nice, because it wouldn’t feel so hot and it could also carry her music.

Growing up over the years, it was always a nice thing when you could go for a walk and hear a good song floating through the air from a car or a house.

Trying not to sound like an old curmudgeon but as a realist, the only thing you might hear on a walk today is a distorted death wave bass line.

Fracking probably produces less vibrations!

How sad!

So let’s get back to Suzy Bogguss!

From the ringing notes of the opening riff, you know this is going to be a fun ride because it’s followed by guitar strums and the even more important hand claps provided by “The Gay Caballeros!”

The song has a wonderful shifting Latin rhythm with superb syncopation and accents!

The arrangement weaves instruments in and out, and everybody gets a spotlight!

Featured on accordion is Joey Miskulin, otherwise known as “Joey the CowPolka King” from the legendary Cowboy group, “Riders in the Sky!”

There’s never been a few empty bars that Joey couldn’t fill!

Other notable mentions include Concertmaster Sid Page for his caliente flavored strings, and the late Tom Roady for his always inventive percussion!

“Music,” from Suzy’s award winning “Aces” album, was written by Andy Byrd, Victoria Shaw, and Jana Stanfield. Jana contributes to the fun by singing back up on the song!

Four songs from the album were hits!

When so much attention is focused on so many other tunes, it’s easy to have another gem overlooked–like when George Harrison was with The Beatles!

Another reason I like “Music on the Wind” is its romantic playfulness!

“How Can You Resist A Moonlit Night/
When There’s Music On The Wind/
You And I Could Listen Side By Side/
To The Music On The Wind?”

And then soaring above everything else, but gently nudged by a breeze, is Suzy‘s warm vocal!

Suzy Bogguss has one of the greatest voices!

Ever!

“Won’t You Come Outside And Dance With Me/
To The Music On The Wind?

I’ll be right there! You don’t have to ask me twice!

I suggest everyone else join us, too!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, August 16, 2020

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

(Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu)) on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Summer Wind” by Frank Sinatra!!!

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Here’s a link to have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”: https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

I love today’s song!

Although I like a ton of songs, I don’t say that about too many songs.

But “Summer Wind” by Frank Sinatra [Hall of Fame] is pretty much a perfect song!

The swirling organ, strings, and horns intro injected with bursts of staccato brass  sounds like a summer breeze to me, on one of those perfect summer days! You only get a few of those every year.

Frankie‘s reserved vocals sound youthful as he guides the listener on a journey through more seasons than just summer, almost reflectively.

But the ride always ends on a warm day!

love this song!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded is “Summer Breeze” by Frank Sinatra!!!
