Phil’s Faves: Songs, August 16, 2020

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Prime Time Theme Attic,” currently on hiatus. (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET)

(Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu)

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, August 9, 2020

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

(Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu)) on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Summer Wind” by Frank Sinatra!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Here’s a link to have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”: https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

I love today’s song!

Although I like a ton of songs, I don’t say that about too many songs.

But “Summer Wind” by Frank Sinatra [Hall of Fame] is pretty much a perfect song!

The swirling organ, strings, and horns intro injected with bursts of staccato brass  sounds like a summer breeze to me, on one of those perfect summer days! You only get a few of those every year.

Frankie‘s reserved vocals sound youthful as he guides the listener on a journey through more seasons than just summer, almost reflectively.

But the ride always ends on a warm day!

love this song!

How ’bout  starting you weekend with some Friday Music Fun?

British Blues guitarist Mick Clarke has been playing legendary music with living legends for over five decades!

Freddie King himself selected his band to tour with him when he toured England–a high compliment indeed!

I’ve been playing Mick for as long as I’ve been at the station.

If I ever get around to checking total winners of my Philby Awards, he will either be at the top or close to it!

Every summer needs a hot instrumental for its soundtrack.

Today’s song is my pick for this year’s!

It’s a track from Clarke’s Diggin’ Down album called “Bluestring!”

His albums always feature great instrumentals, and this one has a nice “Green Onions” type groove that makes the listener want to snap their fingers!

And he plays all the instruments himself!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Bluestring” by Mick Clarke!!!

The moon looked beautiful last night!

Hopefully, tonight’s full moon will be visible, too!

Folklore says that the moon affects people in various ways, and some statistics back that up.

Nick Moss Band with Dennis Gruenling on harp, released a solid new album toward the end of last year called, “Lucky Guy!”

Nick, a whiz on guitar, and the rest of the band, can deliver that Chicago blues like it’s meant to be served up!

How about some Friday music fun?

Some songs just don’t need an explanation.

For those, you just get out of the way.

“Drive” by Kat Perkins is a four-on-the-floor 4×4 flat out rocker!

Pounding drums anchor the sound!

Love the “whoa-ohs!”

You let Kat take the wheel, strap the seatbelts on, roll down the windows, and let her take you for a “Drive” when that light turns green!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

I’m trying to fit in all of my favorite summer songs before it ends!

For a short span of time, probably longer than The Who, The Doors [Hall of Fame] were my favorite artists, ahead of The Beatles! [Hall of Fame]

“L.A. Woman” was a major reason for that!

The album sounded like it was mixed better than any album I owned at the time!

Back then–I don’t know if it’s any different now, the pressing of the album was better if it was the first press off the master. I figured I must have gotten one of those!

Besides the well known songs on “L.A. Woman,”  as usual, I always liked some of the “lesser” songs more!

Today’s selection is a song that I bonded with years ago on a hot summer day.

I was home by myself killing some time listening to “L.A. Woman.”

To be truthful, I initially never cared for “Cars Hiss By My Window.”

The Doors had always embraced the blues, but it had always been disguised as a rock song.

There was no separation from the blues on this one.

This was a slow walking blues including a John Lee Hooker like keeping time tapping foot!

Muted instruments including brushes on the drums, it was astonishing in its simplicity!

I remember the front kitchen window was open and the drapes were dancing softly in the sweltering breeze. I was lying down and listening to the music on the sofa.

The mood felt just like the song!

The blues. Raw. Just like it was intended.

I almost jumped out of my skin when I first heard Jim Morrison do that vocal impromptu guitar solo!

Here’s a shout out to a lesser known Doors song!

And I always think of it on a slow, hot, sunny afternoon!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Cars Hiss By My Window” by The Doors!!!
