Phil’s Faves: Songs, December 2, 2018

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio shows, “Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET, or “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8P-10P ET!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

It’s the Fall New Music Showcase Pt. 2, Wednesday Morning, 10AM-12PM EST!!!

Part two of any of my new music showcases is always the more difficult one because I’ve pretty much used up most of my picks on part one and then I have to fill another two hours two days later with even more debuts! But that’s OK. I welcome the challenge. So, Wednesday morning’s 2018 Fall New Music Showcase Part 2 on “Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 10AM-12PM EST will feature plenty of music that might literally even be new to me! As with Part 1 of the Fall Showcase, new will be a relative term, many being from 2015 to make albums Philby eligible. A song has to be played on one of my shows to make it or an album open to consideration. But I will have new, too!

Songs by artists on the show should include The Cerny BrothersMike Gentry Music (The cover of Mike Gentry Music‘s album is in the upper left corner of the banner.), Greg NagyLatvian Radio (Album cover for “Pick Your Poison, Pick Your Blues” in the lower left corner of the banner.), Sam Corbin, brand new Car City (Album cover for “Car City” in the upper right corner of the banner.), Dede and the Dreamers, brand new Bob MaloneJo Serrapere & the LaFawndas (sorta)(Johnny’s Speakeasy)(Album cover for “Gotcha Covered: The Songs of John Williams” in the lower right corner of banner.), unreleased THE DIRK KROLL BAND for their upcoming performance Thursday night at Willis Show Bar, brand new Michael Stephens song by The Pennock/Stephens Project, Chris Dorman, Jesse Xavier band, and plenty more!!! Come on along for the ride and tune in to 89.3 FM (89.3 WHFR.FM) in the Dearborn-Detroit area, stream it anywhere in the world with this special Fall showcase link : https://whfr.fm/streamer/ (Press the “Listen Live Now” button), or use TuneIn Player or RadioFMto stream it.

It’s the 2018 Fall New Music Showcase Pt. 1 on “Prime Time Theme Attic,” Monday Night, 8PM-10PM EST!!!

My “Fall New Music Showcase” always has several goals:

Feature songs from several albums that I have not played anything from, yet, and, more importantly,

it’s the final push to make albums eligible for Philby awards should I choose to place them.

It’s also the last Faves “Top 9 at 9:09” Album Countdown before the Philby Countdowns start next week!

So Part 1 of the 2018 Fall New Music happens Monday night on “Prime Time Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 8 PM-10 PM EST!!! It’s two hours of music that I have never played before!

Songs by artists should include Steve Leaf & The Ex PatsCoral CreekYour Gracious Host (Album cover for “Boomerang” in the lower left corner of the banner), THE DIRK KROLL BANDMallory KnoxDarlingside, brand new song from Craig Moreau Music (His album cover for “A Different Kind of Train” second from right in the banner.), Jesse CookMay ErlewineKaren Nash (Her album cover for “Love and Justice” in the lower right corner of the banner.), The Bankesters, Joe Peters doing a Michael Stephens song, Joe Kidd & Sheila BurkeJesse Xavier bandKaty Guillen and The GirlsLaura Rain and The CaesarsGrant Maloy SmithStrawberry Heritage, a new song from Dave Boutette and Kristi Lynn Davis (Their album cover for “Easy As Pie” in the upper left corner of banner.), The Go RoundsTerritorial ChantMarshall Young BandDeb Ryder BluesCaroline Cotter, and maybe more!!! So Long 2018…and 2015!!!

The Philby Award

As 2018 follows its inevitable path to 2019, many DJs, reviewers, and bloggers will put together their “Top 10” lists for the year. This is where they get to show how hip or smart they are.

I have nothing against them personally. In fact, I’m a sucker for looking at as many lists as I can. For me, it’s like going through someone’s record collection and I get to make some theories on what that person might be like. But if you look at a lot of them, you’ll see a lot of overlap. It’s almost like a game of poker where everybody wants to see if they picked a “winning hand” by picking the penultimate list. I’ll even speculate that Father John Misty will be on most of them.

That’s not what I’m looking for.

The Philbys is about brilliant musical achievement. It’s not about only listening to albums during a specific time frame.  I have a voracious appetite for finding what I consider to be “good” music.

Therefore, I have decided on trying to maintain a four year window. That’s why 2018 may be going away soon, but 2015 is definitely expiring. I might even give preference to something from 2015, because I can always consider the one from 2018 for next year’s list.

I’m only stating this, because if you expected to see something on my list but didn’t, that may be the reason why.

Although I wouldn’t have the first clue on how to be “hip,” I’m pretty sure that a four window would make me a musical dinosaur.

But that’s OK. I’m here as much for myself as I am for the musician’s that makes the music and the listener who is starved for “good” music.

So here’s another attempt from a recent post to request music to be considered for this year’s Philbys:

If you have not yet submitted something for Philby consideration, I would think of doing so. If I were a musician out there, I would want someone like me to be there for them in the media.

So, if you’ve made some music dating back as far as 2015, I will accept that music for consideration. When it comes to independent self-released projects, an artist may not know how to get their product marketed or recognized. It may take a couple of years to figure that part of it out.

If you have something older than 2015, send that, too, but identify the release date. I’m always looking for GREAT music.

For the Philbys, I’m looking for full albums, however, if you only have a good single, send me that, too. Don’t forget that I also have a Philby Hot Songs list. But don’t send me an incomplete album.

Don’t edit for me.

I hate that, and I would probably disqualify the selection.

Don’t send me links to listen to music. That’s not how I listen to music and I probably won’t listen if you send me a link to stream it. Either send me the album to download or request my mailing address for a physical copy.

More than likely, if your music came out later than May, it may not show up on the 2018 list. It’s not impossible, but I’m just being honest. I like to have music on my lists that I’ve been playing all year and not knock something off my list for something that I haven’t played. I hate it that many year-end lists by music magazines or other sources will often include several selections that were released in late November and early December. How convenient for those artists. An album is a piece of art that has to survive several listens to see if it should qualify as viable.

I will accept any genre of music. I like a variety of styles, even on the same album!

At the least, your music will either be your last chance for this year’s Philby lists, or a first call for next year’s.

Regardless, please e-mail your mp3s, and please make sure it is an mp3 only, to phil@philmaq.com.

If you want a physical address or have other questions, please e-mail me at the same address. Because selections will be considered for more than a single year, there isn’t an expiration date at the present.

If you want someone who will actually listen to your music, I am that person.

If you want some recognition for working hard and baring your soul, that might be me, too. I can’t make any promises, but I will listen to your music.

If you are reading this and are not a musician but know someone who is, please forward this to them.

Good luck to all who participate!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, November 25, 2018

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET) on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

They may also turn up on my “Theme Attic Show,” (Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET)

Here’s a link:

https://whfr.fm/streamer/

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.
