Phil’s Faves: Songs, September 30, 2018

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio shows, “Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET, or “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8P-10P ET!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

“Prime Time Theme Attic” Celebrates Three Years of Music, Monday Night, 8PM-10PM EDT!!!

I can’t believe it’s been three years since I started “Prime Time Theme Attic” with Phil Maq, Monday nights from 8PM-10PM EDT!!!
I had been doing my Wednesday morning “Theme Attic” for about four years at the time. I had been working to play drums in a band once a week, but it fell apart before it even started.
So, I was looking for something to take the place of a weekly practice.
Hey! I think there’s an opening on Monday night’s. I wonder what it would be like to do an evening show. I approached Lynn Grunst, who was the Program Director at the time. She told me to go ahead. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do for a show, but I figured there would be some similarities to the morning show.
I also wanted to mix things up a little bit, too.
I have almost always enjoyed listening to countdowns on the radio, and I always liked doing pretend countdowns on my recording equipment when I was a kid. I was already posting my “Phil’s Faves” lists so I thought I could make the lists come to life. Throw in a catchy little name like the “Top 9 at 9:09” and a weekly countdown was born!
The whole idea of an extra show, in my eyes, was to play more good, unknown music that should be “known!” I think, in that respect, I succeeded with what I wanted to do.
Having an additional night time show has made it easier to have guests on since most musicians are available and awake in the evening. But I’m not sure if I developed the audience I was hoping for. However, I will keep moving forward.
Sometimes, listeners who catch both shows tell me that I “rock” more at night. Since it’s a different time of day, I guess that might make sense. But I see “Prime Time Theme Attic” as “Theme Attic” with a countdown. I approach both shows the same way.
Regardless, It’s my third anniversary, and I plan to celebrate with selected artists for the show!
Songs will feature new music from Allan Thomas (Album cover for “Two Sides to Every Story” in the banner on the right!), The Accidentals, new music from The Turnback (Album cover for “Spinning the Earth in Reverse” in the banner above!), Ed Dupas, Kate Jablonski, Best Behavior, new music from Wyves, Balkun Brothers, Muriel Anderson, Angela Perley & The Howlin’ Moons, John Barron, Royal Wood, Deni Bonet, Katy Guillen and The Girls, new music from Eric Gnezda – Songwriter and Speaker, Love Axe and Andy Freeman (Futureman Records), Steve Elci and Friends, The Beatles, Maria Muldaur, and more!!!
Today is also Cub Koda‘s birthday (pictured in the banner)! He was part of that Detroit rock and roll history as part of Brownsville Station! It’s the perfect time to put them both into the “Theme Attic Hall of Fame!”

Phil’s Faves: Albums, September 23, 2018

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET) on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

They may also turn up on my “Theme Attic Show,” (Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET)

Here’s a link:

https://whfr.fm/streamer/

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

It’s the Annual Peace Show On “Prime Time Theme Attic,” Monday Night, 8PM-10PM EDT!!!

It would be wonderful to not have to do another show about peace.

Everybody living in harmony!

But alas, it’s not happening this year. Maybe it’s just too big to do. We think that we can’t have an impact that would or could have an affect.

Well, let’s look at trying to have peace in our own lives. So on tonight’s “Prime Time Theme Attic” from 8PM-10PM EDT with Phil Maq, I’ll play some songs that will help us focus on peace a little closer to home. There will also be a “Top 9 at 9:09” of this week’s Fave Albums!

Songs by artists on the show will include Annie & Rod Capps, Southern Avenue, Merlot Embargo, Nick Piunti & The Complicated Men, Angela Perley & The Howlin’ Moons, DON ARBOR, the liquid scene, Nora Jane Struthers and The Party Line, Sheryl Crow, The Brigadier, MAGNUM, The Bayonets, Dave Caruso Music, Billy Brandt & Sarana VerLin, Seth Bernard (His album cover for “Eggtones For Peace” in the banner above), Marcia Ball, Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials, Bob Marley, Tosha Owens, Jason Hawk Harris, Allan Thomas, Charley & Jesi, Muriel Anderson, Stepladders, and more!!!

Phil Maq and Jaqbeard Together Again!

This show already happened on Wednesday, September 19, 2018. I’m just trying to catch up.

More computer issues. Maybe it would just be better to be a pirate.

It’s time for the annual appearance of Jaqbeard the pirate. Probably against my better judgment, I’ve arranged for him to appear without any brute force being used. On his end. I’m not sure what time he’ll show up because he’s not very reliable. But I have picked some songs to play while he’s here.

They will not be your great-great-great-great-great grandfather’s pirate music!

Of course, there will be other songs, too. Songs by other artists on the show will include Michael Stephens, Deni Bonet, Boo Ray, Annie & Rod Capps, The Hangabouts, Ye Banished Privateers, Bill Grogan’s Goat, Gann Brewer, John Ginty and @Aster, Paddy And The Rats, The O’Reillys and the Paddyhats, Sarah Jane Scouten, Michael Jonathon, and many more!!!

Come on along for the ride and tune in to 89.3 FM (89.3 WHFR.FM) in the Dearborn-Detroit area, stream it anywhere in the world with this special link : https://whfr.fm/streamer/ (Press the “Listen Live Now” button), or use Tune In Player to stream it.
