Phil’s Faves: Albums, June 25, 2017

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET) on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

They may also turn up on my “Theme Attic Show,” (Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET)

Here’s a link:

Listen live: www.whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, June 25, 2017

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio shows, “Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET, or “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8P-10P ET!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

Jean-Luc Ponty Interview Part 2 on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic,” with Phil Maq, 10AM-12 Noon EDT!!!

Image result for jean-luc ponty photos

I have put together another 20+ minute segment of my phone interview on June 10th with legendary violinist Jean-Luc Ponty!

It will air Wednesday, June 28th, on WHFR (89.3 FM) in the Dearborn-Detroit area as part of my annual “Almost All American Show!” Here’s a link to stream the show: http://whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html

In this section, which includes music to support his dialogue, Jean-Luc talks about his relationship with Frank Zappa, guesting on Elton John‘s “Honky Chateau,” and working on the classic Mahavishnu Orchestra’s albums with John McLaughlin!

Here’s one of the tracks, “Mellow” by Elton John, where Ponty supplies his distinctive sound:

The artist provides fascinating insights to his early career working with some of the biggest and innovative artists at the time that helped launch his own phenomenal career!

WHFR Blues Fundraiser, “Ladies Sing the Blues,” Has a “Smokin’ Hot” Lineup!!!

Image may contain: 2 people

The WHFR Fundraiser, “Ladies Sing the Blues,” happens this Sunday at the Hastings Street Ballroom! The lineup is one of the best you’re ever going to find this year!

Featuring Detroit’s own Queen of the Blues, Thornetta Davis, hot off of winning eight Detroit Music Awards last month, Eliza Neals–who has won many awards herself, appearing with special guest guitarist Howard Glazer, and emerging blues artist Alicia Marie, the event has talent that any promoter would drool over!

Money raised by this event goes to support Dearborn, Michigan radio station WHFR, an independent station that relies on listener support to keep things going for the all volunteer staff and plays all of these artists as well as so much more! This event takes place with the generous support of The Detroit Blues Society, since it takes place at their headquarters!

So, come on out and support local music and independent radio! Any other information that you might need is in the poster above!

David Roof, Judy Banker, and Bobby Pennock Present Music of The Resistance on Monday Night’s “Prime Time Theme Attic!!!”

It doesn’t take a genius to observe that there is a lot that is going wrong—not only in the United States, but in the world. So, how can someone make others aware of the situation and what to do to remedy things?

If you’re a musician, you might just turn to the tools of your trade and make some music about it. That is exactly what the artists collected on the “Michigan Music Resistance” have done. David Roof, multi-instrumentalist, Record Producer, and owner of Rooftop Recording is donating his time, and money to record artists and new songs that try to tackle this current political situation.

No automatic alt text available.

David, as well as Judy Banker, and Bobby Pennock, all well established musicians in their own right, will be visiting with me in the WHFR studios for my Monday night version of “Prime Time Theme Attic,” from 8PM-10PM EDT!!!

We will be playing songs from the album including a world premiere from John Dow Williams, owner of “Johnny’s Speakeasy” in Ann Arbor! In between tunes, we will be discussing the impact resistance music can have on everyday people as well as a historical look at music for movements.

Join us on Monday night for this thought provoking show!
