Phil’s Faves: Albums, January 15, 2017

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET) on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

They may also turn up on my “Theme Attic Show,” (Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET)

Here’s a link:

Listen live: www.whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves, Songs, January 15, 2017

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.
Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio shows, “Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET, or “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8P-10P ET!

Philby Best Albums of 2016, Pt. 3!!!

I’ve been working on this year’s Philby list since Thanksgiving weekend. Truth be told, I’m always working on my year end lists. It just becomes more intense after Thanksgiving. I always have a list going for the year, and I add potential “nominees” as I hear them.

Most of the post Thanksgiving work centers around making sure I didn’t leave an album off the list that I felt should have been included. (It happens every year, and so far I have caught it.)

But I like to keep time frames “loose.” A lot of albums are released towards the end of the year –especially big name acts. Who even seriously has time to listen to them as the holidays get closer?

One of my requirements is that I have to play at least one track off of the album to be considered for eligibility. Since I do two shows a week now, that has become a lot easier to do. But I don’t feel that it’s fair to me or my listeners or to the artists themselves to bump someone I’ve been playing all year just to be replaced by something “new and shiny.”

This even works in the case of “should be big name acts.” Some of the artists on the list have had a more recent release. Although it would appear that I’m “off my game” by posting an older album, I would prefer to list the one I’ve been playing rather than the one I haven’t even touched. There’s always next year for the newer release.

I’m not trying to bore you with details. I’m just trying to explain a little more of my selection process. As I’ve said before, I work on this process year round. I would hate, at this moment, to have time specific parameters like “January 1—December 31.” Music doesn’t even arrive at the station from promoters and artists on that time frame.

Music should be fun and have a serendipitous sense of magical discovery for the listener, just like it does for the musicians making it. Adhering to a strict time limit would be the equivalent of punching a clock. In other words, actual work. And anyone who listens to my show or knows me, knows that “I ain’t into time, man!”

Philby Best Albums of 2016, Pt.2!!!

Twenty great albums into the list with the second set of twenty ready to be revealed on Monday night’s “Prime Time Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 8PM-10PM ET!

Putting the albums into numerical order is kind of painful in a way, because I like them all. That’s why they’re on the list in the first place. But, even though any list is subjective, when the list is finally complete, it feels pretty satisfying. But it’s definitely open to discussion.

Having said that, Songs by artists on the show include Si Kahn, Activist, Organizer & Folk Singer/Songwriter and The Looping Brothers, Great Caesar’s Ghost, Pousette-Dart Band (Jon Pousette-Dart), Sigrid Christiansen, Whistler’s Father, Christa Gniadek, The Vaude Villains, Raina Randolph, JEN HOUSTON MUSIC, Best Coast, The Midnight Madcat Blues Journey featuring Peter Madcat Ruth, Drew Howard Music, Michael Shimmin, and Mark R Schrock recorded live at Salt of the Earth, Xposed 4Heads, Best Behavior, Shemekia Copeland, The Grave Jinglers, The Secrets (DetroitSecrets), Arjun, Linda McRae, Detroit Johnny-O, and Space Heater!!!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, January 1, 2017

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, January 1, 2017!!!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!
