Phil’s Faves: Songs, December 18, 2016

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio shows, “Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET, or “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8P-10P ET!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, December 11, 2016

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET) on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

They may also turn up on my “Theme Attic Show,” (Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET)

Here’s a link:
Listen live: www.whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.
I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Bob Dylan has been in the news a lot over the past several months, so it seems only fitting that one of his songs hits the top slot on the songs list. But this one is so different! It’s a cover version of “Blowing in the Wind” by Sultans of String featuring Chris McKhool’s clear vocal and Anwar Khurshid’s tasteful sitar. They combine to give the band their first #1 on the list!

Goodbye Grammys, Hello Philbys!!!

I was getting ready for my Wednesday morning show a couple of days ago when I ran across the complete list of Grammy nominees. As I was poring over all of the names and titles, I began the slow realization that there really wasn’t much for me to get excited about.

And that made me sad.

It made me sad for a lot of reasons. I’m sad because I can’t turn on the radio anymore and wait for something good to play—unless it’s old. I can’t wait breathlessly for a new song that I heard the other day for the first time, to play again. It’s just not there on commercial radio. And this year’s Grammy list reflects that wasteland.

Now, anyone who’s listened to either of my shows, would probably agree that while I like to hear an occasional classic—sometimes several of them in a row while I’m doing a “This Day in Music History” segment, I am all about new music by new artists. I continuously search for quality songs, albums, and musicians. I always have and it’s what drives me to do my shows!

So I don’t feel that I’m coming to this point acting like a big band guy complaining that beautiful music is being ruined by “this new rock n roll fad.” As a matter of fact, there are quite a few nominees that I like and listen to. I wish them luck. But there’s not enough of them.

So it is with a heavy heart that I now feel that I have outgrown The Grammys. I never thought I would. I have tried to hang on with a spirit of hope that music brings to me. I know that a lot of my friends have quit the current music scene years ago. I was the one holding on, refusing to let go.

But I have to because I know in my heart, what I play on my shows is tremendously better, in most instances, than what’s on those lists. I mean, I don’t mess with classical or opera as examples. I’m not trying to be “full of myself,” but I know that with the sheer volume of music that I listen to and play—and I’m guessing it’s more than most Grammy listeners or music reviewers do, that I can say these things.

Maybe this is just a bad year for Grammy music. Maybe next year will be better. I sure hope so because then that’s better for all music lovers and artists. But until then, it’s:

GOODBYE GRAMMYS, HELLO PHILBYS!!!!!!!!!

Oh, yeah. On a totally unrelated topic (Ha, ha!), The Philby “Hot 100 Songs of 2016” starts Monday night from 8PM-10 PM ET!

2016 Fall New Music Showcase, Pt.2!!!

Part 1 of my 2016 “Prime Time Fall New Music Showcase” was a lot of fun resulting in 24 new tracks being featured! I’m sure several will show up on future “Phil’s Faves” lists!

The next segment of my annual “Fall New Music Showcase Show, Pt.2” will be featured on “Theme Attic,” this Wednesday morning from 10AM-12PM ET! As I feel I have to explain, the music featured on this show isn’t so much “new” as it is music that I have not played on either of my shows. However, the goal of the show is to play as many songs and artists that I have not played yet to make the albums eligible for this year’s Philby Awards—which will start with next week’s “Hot 100 Songs of 2016!” This DOES NOT mean that they will appear on either of my year end lists. It only means that that the artists and their music can be considered for them.

Songs by artists on Wednesday morning’s show will include Nick Waterhouse, Teaheads, Voo Davis, Jo Philby, Sarah Blacker, Laura Rain and The Caesars, Sparrow Sleeps, , Michael Simmons, Paul Melancon and The New Insecurities, Eugene Hideaway Bridges, l, Peter Madcat Ruth, Zoe Muth, Toronzo Cannon, The Supplement, The Liquid Scene, The Pole Barn Rebels,  Clay Cambeck, The Rutles, and maybe more!

Let’s have even more fun exploring new music together!!!

Here’s a link for the show to listen to and share: http://www.whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html
