Phil’s Faves: Albums, April 10, 2016

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-11P ET) on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

They may also turn up on my “Theme Attic Show,” (Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET)

Here’s a link:

Listen live: www.whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, April 10, 2016

This will be a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.
Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio shows, “Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET, or “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8P-11P ET!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

Happy 5th Anniversary www.philmaq.com!!!!!

From a very humble beginning, I started a web site based upon my DJ name. I had been doing my College Radio show, “Theme Attic” on WHFR in Dearborn, Michigan for almost 4 months at that point. I have always had opinions about music and my family as well as a couple of friends suggested I quit bending their ears and try to find an audience that had the same fervor for music that I had and still do.

So I did.

I didn’t exactly have a high concept about what that would mean, but I jumped in and got started. My first couple of entries were just random thoughts or essays that may have been OK for some college class. But writing about music instead of talking about music is very different from each other. I don’t want to rehash my “About Me” page because it’s still there in its original format. But I thought I knew a lot about music. Now I would never say that as a brag. I only mean that in the sense of my exposure to the variety and volume of music as well as the books I had read as well as magazines.

But, in general, I continue to learn about all kinds of music and artists. And I’m smart enough to know that if someone really knows they’re “stuff” about a certain artist or era, I will always back down and defer to their expertise. That doesn’t mean I don’t have an opinion on the subject in question, but I don’t consider myself a “specialist” in a music style. Now, I may be when compared to others and just don’t know it. But I consider myself more as a “general practitioner” of music. I know just enough about a lot of things to be dangerous to myself!

I have always been interested in new music. I get irritated when I hear someone say that there isn’t any good “new music” to listen to. It’s that new music that drives my music obsession. So my familiarity and desire to stay up on new music has allowed me to establish my Philby awards! I continue to work on my brand and many changes and updates will take place in the next year.

So I went from “nothing” and one web site to two sites now with www.beatlebits.com and the original site that has 870 entries and tens of thousands of views. I will continue to develop new ideas and ways to display my love of music. And if you have ever looked at any of my blogs, I sincerely “Thank You!” But I have plenty more ideas to act upon! I invite you to stick with me as I do.

Peace
–Phil Maq

The Moon + Havana = Intoxicating Music from Wendy Webb and Santana!!!

Two events this week pointed me in a direction to combine them as a subject for this week’s “Theme Attic” Show. (Wednesdays, 10a-12N ET and “Prime Time Theme Attic,” Mondays from 8PM-11PM ET. Stream both at www.whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html) President Obama became the first U.S. President to visit Havana, Cuba since Calvin Coolidge almost one hundred years ago. His diplomatic trip is another step towards normalizing relations between the two countries.

March 23rd is the first full moon of spring known as the “worm moon.” It goes right along as the initial step for warmer weather, April showers, and May flowers. The moon is often a muse for many artists. There’s something mystical and mysterious about it as it “shines” in full splendor!

I chose to focus on two songs whose videos capture the other worldliness of an island that is all too familiar in our history.

Both songs are the title tracks of their albums. Wendy Webb, (2015 Philby Song of the Year Winner), captures the feeling perfectly with “Moon on Havana.” The video is further enhanced by the cinematography of Raul Corrales and Randy Wayne White:

The second video is another album title track, this time by Santana. The band did a cover version of Chuck Berry’s classic “Havana Moon” with a very Cuban flavor! The slide show for this song is filled with classic images!:
