Phil’s Faves: Videos, February 10, 2013

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best videos currently available on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus mostly on current or recent videos. For this category, I am also going to include any live performances on talk or variety shows that I see during the week.

Dun, Dun, Dun:The Croods Trailer–I Can’t Help But Watch!

Look. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen this trailer, but I have to watch it until “Belt” goes, “Dun, Dun, Dun,” in that little, silly voice! (Hint: It’s at 1:33)

“Q” Bombs: February 10, 2013

A “Q” Bomb, like an “H” bomb, will be my term for a music video that I consider to be subpar in music, video, or both. This will be a recurring weekly list that will focus on the worst videos that are currently on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus on solely on current or recent videos.
I hate to be so negative about music, but when an artist takes a “bad” song and then brings more attention to it by creating a “bad” video to support it, it will appear on this list. I honestly hope, and it could happen, that this list will be less than 10 items, but I have serious doubts that that possibility will happen. We are, after all, talking about an industry that uses art for huge profits. The companies can’t help themselves.
However, at this point, I will not do a 10 worst music list. I see absolutely no reason to waste time reemphasizing bad music. Once is enough.

James Grant and “Urban Rock Radio” Remembered

It’s almost been a year since WHFR DJ James Grant suddenly passed away. He is in the “Theme Attic” Hall of Fame because of the vision that he had for music that he broadcast as “Urban Rock Radio.” It centered on “black” rock artists that didn’t quite fit the corporate world. Believe me, I don’t think any of these artists had a bigger fan than James, or “Jimi,” as he called himself.

I was a regular listener to his weekly show and learned about a whole other rock world that I wasn’t even aware existed. This is coming from someone who has obsessed about music my whole life and wasn’t aware of this alternate universe. Oh, sure, I was familiar with some of the bands, but not most of them. And James had a way of packaging the music to give you his own guided tour of that world. His world.

I miss James every time I run across something that I know he would have loved. When I was lucky enough to catch George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic at Detroit’s Concert of Colors (in primo seats!) I know me and James would probably still be smiling and talking about it.

I miss his laughter..and that great voice!

I hardly knew him, but we used to talk a lot when we were together. One year, if that much. I really didn’t know him at all, but I feel like I’ve known him my whole life because we connected through our musical interests.

This Wednesday, February 27, 2013, I will humbly fill his time slot, 10AM-Noon EST, at www.whfr.fm and do “Urban Rock Radio” again in his memory. I will play songs that he either played or didn’t get around to playing yet. Fortunately, James knew he was doing something special and left some of it around for us to enjoy!

If you have a memory to share or a request that I might be able to play, let me know by my facebook page, Phil Maq, or at phil@philmaq.com.

Let’s remember James and never let the memory die!

Peace!
Phil Maq

Phil’s Faves: Songs, February 3, 2013

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Jessica Dayle is now on youtube!

Since I have admired Jessica Dayle for almost a year now, I have been pleasantly surprised to find that she has begun posting videos on YouTube. This is fantastic! Now everybody can see for themselves how relaxed and down to earth she is. And, oh yeah. She also looks almost as beautiful as her pretty voice!

I also want to thank her for the kind words that she has said about me in her own blog. Check out her website at www.jessicadayle.com…and sign up for her newsletter!

Below is the ultra cute video that she sent out on Valentine’s Day:

#113 February 7th Mardi Gras “Theme Attic” Playlist!

Well, the Mardi Gras show really did turn out to be a “blast from the bayou,” as Wayne Toups might say! I made a lot of changes at the last minute and Johnette Downing, Dr.John, David Lindley, and “Firewater” were added, which I think made the show an even spicier gumbo!

I hope you got a kick out of the “Walkin’” theme. All of the songs are Fats Domino songs, and that one popped into my head the night before the show.

Beausoleil was picked the morning of the show, and it was so obvious I can’t figure out why I didn’t pick them sooner. Micharel Doucet and the rest of the band are staunch defenders of the Acadian culture. I luckily remembered “Acadian Driftwood when I added Beausoleil.

“Java” was a spur of the moment add. “Diggy Liggy Lo” was a phone request. “Obvious Child” was a last minute idea. I meant to play a different Weird Al medley, but I grabbed the wrong one.

It all worked splendidly!
