This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best videos currently available on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus mostly on current or recent videos. For this category, I am also going to include any live performances on talk or variety shows that I see during the week.

1) “Lovin’ You Is Fun”—I still smile when I see Easton Corbin’s video! It’s almost like you can vicariously live the experience!
2) “Beer Money”—Not a great song or video, but it rings true to Kip Moore’s nature!
3) “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye”—Luke Bryan’s good sleazy song and video—without all of the dramatics, seems to ring true!
4) “Cruise”—It’s a good thing that Florida Georgia Line decided to film one of their joyrides! 😉
5) “I Like Girls That Drink Beer”—As much as I think that there isn’t anything new here from Toby Keith, it’s starting to grow on me!
6) “Take a Little Ride”—Jason Aldean paints the right picture even up to the point of having the girl put her “pretty pink toes on the dash!” Nice alliteration and a very hot little detail!
7) “Tornado”—Little Big Town’s video of their title track is a powerful one! It looks more like a movie than a video, and I hope that CMT continues to show it unedited.
8) “Fastest Girl in Town”—Yes, Miranda Lambert and Danica Patrick pal around a la “Thelma and Louise,” but the video or song doesn’t really grab me like it should, which is why I haven’t mentioned it for the long time that it’s been out. I do think it’s better than most things that are out there now, so it finally made the list. Maybe it’s just that I’m a guy, but I don’t think so. I don’t mind seeing a loser guy get burned by a couple of fast chicks. I just don’t feel that there’s enough excitement……..
9) “Merry Go ‘Round”—A nice, new entry from Kacey Chambers. I only saw it once, but it really caught my attention of its depiction of small town life. I hope I get to see it again…………
10) “Begin Again”—Taylor Swift’s new video and song are so much better than her first release. I’m sure this one will be around for awhile!

“Q” Bombs: November 4, 2012

A “Q” Bomb, like an “H” bomb, will be my term for a music video that I consider to be subpar in music, video, or both. This will be a recurring weekly list that will focus on the worst videos that are currently on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus on solely on current or recent videos.
I hate to be so negative about music, but when an artist takes a “bad” song and then brings more attention to it by creating a “bad” video to support it, it will appear on this list. I honestly hope, and it could happen, that this list will be less than 10 items, but I have serious doubts that that possibility will happen. We are, after all, talking about an industry that uses art for huge profits. The companies can’t help themselves.
However, at this point, I will not do a 10 worst music list. I see absolutely no reason to waste time reemphasizing bad music. Once is enough.

I really dislike the videos and songs on this list—particularly the first five. If I could have five #1 “Q” Bombs I would do it. Maybe things will start to change………..

2. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together—Taylor Swift

1) “Cowboys and Angels”—Who likes this video? It moved back up to #2 on CMT. ODWITS!
2) “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”—Taylor Swift continues her huge kickoff for her album “Red.” But for me, the good Taylor Swift news is that this video fell off of CMT’s countdown, was replaced by a better video and song (“Begin Again”),
and fell from the top spot on VH1. Those are all steps in the right direction………………
3) “Come Wake Me Up”—So many other videos and songs are annoying me more than this video, so Rascal Flatts gets a pass…for now…………………
4) “Blown Away”—As I stated in a previous “Q” Bomb article, Carrie Underwood finally makes it to the top on CMT. Hopefully, it can finally start to move down the list………….
5) “Too Close”—Alex Clare is #3 on VH1. Way “too close”…………………
6) “Ho Hey”—So lay….m (lame)……………………..
7) “Locked Out of Heaven”—Bruno Mars has admitted that Michael Jackson is an idol of his and this video and song looks and sounds just like him. This is one of the few times that that isn’t a good thing……….
8) “Hall of Fame”—OK. I’m getting the feeling that the song is better than the video……
9) “As Long As You Love Me”—Justin Bieber keeps leveling off and not falling. Canadian youth, apparently, just don’t understand gravity…………..
10) “Good Time”—Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen fall a lot on VH1. Well, now, that’s a good time………………………

Phil’s Faves: Songs, October 28, 2012

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

1) “Summertime”—I’m getting the feeling I may just have to retire Jessica Dayle’s GREAT song! I still go out of my way to listen to this song. It picks my spirits up! Go to jessicadayle.com and order it!
2) “The Leaves Are Changing”—The leaves have changed and pretty much fallen off the trees, but Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys have staying power!
3) “Haunted Castle”—Probably the last week for this lost instrumental. I just really like all of the stops and starts that allow the band members to take little solo turns!
4) “The Spider & the Fly”—This Halloween themed song—and it wasn’t made as one – is a tight, jazzy look at the encounter between a male fly and a female spider. The chorus of silly sounding voices singing, “Poor fly/Bye bye” is too cute and hilarious! This is another one of those songs that can lift a Halloween party, because no one else knows about it!
5) “All Hallow’s Eve”—Mannheim Steamroller at their spookiest best! The synthesizers sound really sinister!
6) “Sweet Cider”—Gathering Time is a folk trio that put out a collection of songs emphasizing apples. Sounding a lot like a reunited Peter, Paul, & Mary, this song is as sweet as the cider that they are singing about!
7) “Hillbillies in a Haunted House”—This Austin Lounge Lizards song is way out of left field. There is a plot describing what happens when a group of hillbillies meet horrible deaths as they party in a haunted house! The song is a total black comedy classic, including how the situation resolves itself. What else would you expect from a song on an album called “Never an Adult Moment!”
8) “Little Misunderstood”—I, myself, stumbled upon this Barbara Lynn Doran cut that is as good as her other song that has caught my attention for the past two months! It’s a somewhat autobiographical song about not quite fitting in to a conforming world when you have different aspirations. It’s very touching…and it rocks!
9) “Dig Gravedigger Dig”—I’m going to put Corb Lund’s latest offering onto my Halloween favorites! It’s an eerie folksy foot stomper that looks at the life of a gravedigger, who thinks of his job as doing “piecework,” and has nice rhymes around things like cadavers!
10) “Maybe I’ll Fly”—Barbara Lynn Doran’s other song is ready to fly away. I thoroughly enjoyed the time it spent visiting!

3) “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye”—I haven’t changed my mind on Luke Bryan’s current video because I like it even more!
4) “Cruise”—If you ask me, there aren’t enough videos with strip poker scenes. Thank you Florida Georgia Line for taking care of that shortage!
5) “I Like Girls That Drink Beer”—Hey, Toby! Who doesn’t?!
6) “You Know the Night”—A relaxed performance by Jackson Browne assisted by bassist Rob Wasserman from a Woody Guthrie tribute “Note of Hope.” “Mellow music” just sounds so right when Jackson Browne plays it!
7) “Feel Again”—Well, well. Another surprise for this year. I’ve been holding back on talking about One Republic’s latest video because I wasn’t sure if I really liked it. Well, I do!
8) “Your Body”—Christina Aguilera has put out a new sexy and creepy video. It’s…..interesting………………
9) “Take a Little Ride”—This one could fall into that upside and backwards year category…but not really. I like Jason Aldean. I just don’t always care for all of his singles picks or the way they are portrayed. His first video from his new “Night Train” album captures him the way I perceive him to be!
10) “50 Ways to Say Goodbye”—Train is now officially on life support………………

5. Hellbound Train—Savoy Brown

1) “Summertime”—Alright, I have to admit it…I still like Jessica Dayle’s song more than all of the others! Get it at itunes.com!
2) “The Leaves are Changing” —Lindsay Lou & The Flatbelly’s hang around at the runner up spot for a second week. The song is a nice contrast to the other Halloween songs I’ve been listening to!
3) “Haunted Castle”—A relatively unknown instrumental classic from The Kingsmen that was the flip side of “Louie Louie.” It’s a nice spooky-lite Halloween instrumental that’s really hard to find! I suggets you look for it at youtube.com.
4) “Mumbo Jumbo”—Another voodoo song and another title track from a band that is at the top of it’s game! This is an off beat song that can really pump up your Halloween party!
5) “Hellbound Train”—Savoy Brown has put long extended jams on many of their albums over the years. “Hellbound Train” is the title track from a 70’s album, and it just happens to be the best song on it. It’s a really cool song and should be played VERY LOUD!
6) “Maybe I’ll Fly”—Barbara Lynn Doran is flying a little lower this week, but it’s been a good run!
7) “Death Trap”—Charlie Peacock sticks around with his Randy Newman-esque wordplay about arguments!
8) “Tecolote”—“Tecolote” is taken from Bread’s “Guitar Man” album, and the band shows its teamwork with inventive instrumental work. There’s a nice organ solo, that follows a blistering guitar solo, and Mike Botts’ drumming sounds otherworldly and hypnotic! This song was never meant for Halloween, but it more than meets the requirements!
9) “Earthtones”—I am judging this song strictly on its merits. I think it is a very catchy rock song. Ted has been known to compose a few over the years. And by doing an instrumental, he doesn’t have to say anything………………
10) “Don’t Fear the Reaper”—A group known as Bobtown, originating out of Battle Creek, Michigan, took on what I consider to be a classic Halloween song from the mid-Seventies, that leaves the listener cold and haunted!

2) “Beer Money”—Hey now! I found a better reason to like this video than Kip Moore: His passenger in the truck changing into her jeans! Now that’s what music videos were made for!
3) “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye”—Luke Bryan finally put together a package that works on all levels and he should get rewarded!
4) “Cruise”—Florida Georgia Line open their video with a beautiful girl in the water and then go cruising with her and her friend. Sometimes less of a plot is better than having one!
5) “I Like Girls That Drink Beer”—I have a feeling that beer is a factor in the videos above Toby Keith. He didn’t quite follow their lead with a good video, but the melody pulls this one through!
6) “Stars”—A killer song and vocal performance from Grace Potter but not much of a video…………..
7) “50 Ways to Say Goodbye”—Once again, I thought Train would be off my list but they continue to hang around. A good video will do that for you!
8) “Everybody Talks”—“Everybody Talks” but they’re not necessarily talking about Neon Trees. This video’s run is over, it’s only a matter of when…………..
9) “She’s So Mean”—A big fall for Matchbox 20. The end is near…………..
10) “Pontoon”—Probably the last week for Little Big Town…………………….

3) “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”—Taylor Swift took a big fall out of the Top Ten on CMT, but is number three on VH1. Talk about a schizophrenic video and who it was targeted to…………………………
4) “Too Close”—Alex Clare is quietly moving up towards the top on VH1. If he continues to move up there, he’ll continue to rise here………………
5) “Ho Hey”—Last week was a mistake-ay. The Lumineers move back into VH1’s Top Ten again……………………….
6) “Cowboys and Angels”—I’m really getting tired of writing things for Dustin Lynch’s video. Dustin, take a hint from the leaves and fall off the charts…………….
7) “As Long As You Love Me”—Justin Bieber shows some staying power and that means he has staying power here, too…………….
