Phil’s Faves: Songs, October 14, 2012

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.
Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

1) “Summertime”—Jessica Dayle is still the queen of my faves list! Her web site, jessicadayle.com, is still under construction, but you can still locate this song at her Facebook page or iTunes! Do it!
2) “The Leaves Are Changing”—Lindsay Lou is probably the only person that could make stark trees and a gloomy late fall and winter sound perky and happy as she describes “Mother Nature in her underwear!” You go girl! Thanks for cheering me up for the winter!
3) “Maybe I’ll Fly”—Barbara Lynn Doran is starting to lose altitude on her smokin’ hot single! Check it out at her Facebook page!
4) “Soolaimon”—Neil Diamond put together an “African Suite” of songs on an album called “Taproot Manuscript.” It’s so difficult not to fall under the spell of the tribal drums and infectious gospel chorus that worked so well for him before on “Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show!”
5) “Copperleaf”—Dana Faloconberry hangs around for a second week with pretty harmonies and a catchy melody!
6) “Stars”—Any song that starts out with the line, “I lit a fire with the love you left behind” and then proceeds to describe that the stars might remind her of the ashes from that fire, is already so far ahead of 99% of all songs ever written, that you can’t help but feel for Grace Potter in this true life ballad! She makes pain sound so poetic with an incredible vocal!
7) “My Bet’s I’m a Fool”—It looks like one song from Jessica Dayle may finally be reaching the end of its run…but I wouldn’t “bet” against it!
8) “Awaken”—Yes placed this long extended track reminiscent of their “Tales From Topographic Oceans” days on their “Going for the One” album. It contains everything that makes Yes what they are: Obscure new age lyrics, multiple textures and time changes, great harmonies, etc. I was able to hear them play this one live for the first time this past summer and I never realized or appreciated what a majestic piece it truly is! It has been on my mind ever since!
9) “Death Trap”—Charlie Peacock releases his first vocal album in thirteen years, “No Man’s Land,” and it is a gem with dense arrangements that sometimes sound like the soul of The Band has been summoned for the sessions, and very deep lyrics as he finds his way through his family’s history! “Death Trap” is the lead track and as you bop along listening to it, you don’t realize that Charlie is singing that sometimes words sting in an argument and can be a “death trap,” so don’t use them that way. But he admits he can’t always follow his own advice. This is great stuff!
10) “Slouch Potato”—This is a very funky groove from Drew Schultz off his album “Back to Class!” The whole album is retro Motown soul, and the fact that it has members of The Funk Brothers as well as closely related musicians has a lot to do with that! It’s catchy and grooooooooooooooooooovy!

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best videos currently available on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus mostly on current or recent videos. For this category, I am also going to include any live performances on talk or variety shows that I see during the week.

1) “Lovin’ You Is Fun”—Abigail Klein, TV reality star, is the female having fun with Easton Corbin! I thought she looked familiar! Well, I would be honored to have her dance around while I sing a song to her, just like she does with Easton Corbin!
2) “Stars”—Grace Potter & The Nocturnals should not be this high. The video isn’t that good, but the vocal performance is stellar!
3) “She’s So Mean”—I guess it’s not going to be Matchbox 20 knocking out Little Big Town and I think the video has definitely peaked for me……………….
4) “Pontoon”—I think the end is finally near for Little Big Town and their “pontoon,” but they took us for some of the best rides of the summer!
5) “I Like Girls That Drink Beer”—The video is your average Toby Keith concert footage but the song is another winner and pulls it into the faves category!
6) “Cruise”—Florida Georgia Line have put out a hot looking summer video that finally is getting attention in the fall. I will not hold that against them because both the song and the video are worth checking out!
7) “50 Ways to Say Goodbye”—The “train” is finally leaving the station and probably the countdown………..
8) “Everybody Talks”—Now that Neon Trees finally reached the top, they have started to fade quickly. The song still sounds fresh!
9) “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye”—Finally, a Luke Bryan video that I like—and the song is good, too! It’s still overly dramatic, but at least the brunette is beautiful!
10) “Beer Money”—Kip Moore makes a second appearance on my favorite videos list. The video isn’t all that creative, but the song is pretty good!

“Q” Bombs: October 14, 2012

A “Q” Bomb, like an “H” bomb, will be my term for a music video that I consider to be subpar in music, video, or both. This will be a recurring weekly list that will focus on the worst videos that are currently on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus on solely on current or recent videos.
I hate to be so negative about music, but when an artist takes a “bad” song and then brings more attention to it by creating a “bad” video to support it, it will appear on this list. I honestly hope, and it could happen, that this list will be less than 10 items, but I have serious doubts that that possibility will happen. We are, after all, talking about an industry that uses art for huge profits. The companies can’t help themselves.
However, at this point, I will not do a 10 worst music list. I see absolutely no reason to waste time reemphasizing bad music. Once is enough.

3) “Cowboys and Angels”—Dustin Lynch’s washed out looking video continues to rise on CMT’s countdown. It may take both “cowboys and angels” to remove him from that list…………
4) “Too Close”—Alex Clare is moving “too close” to the top of VH1’s list…………
5) “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”—Taylor Swift’s song has crossed into the Top Ten on both VH1 and CMT. Unfortunately, it looks like this one’s going to be around a lot longer than I thought…………………..
6) “Ho Hey”—The Lumineers start to disappear-ay……………..
7) “As Long As You Love Me”—Justin Bieber hurls on stage and I guess everyone “still loves him.” The performance may have been better than his video……………….
8) “Walk the Sun”—I don’t think that the “sun or Anna Moon” can get me to like this song…………….
9) “Good Time”—Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen didn’t fall off the list fast enough. I’m worried “Good Time” is turning into a simbie for me. ODWITS!
10) “Hall of Fame”—I haven’t seen The Script’s new video all that much, so my opinion may change, but honestly, I don’t get what makes The Script as popular as they are without throwing will.i.am into the mix………………

1) “Summertime”—All right. Hard to believe, but I may have finally reached my limit on analyzing Jessica Dayle’s superb musical gem! I still haven’t gotten tired of it, and I smile every time I hear it! Find it at jessicadayle.com or iTunes.
2) “Stars”—A song that begins with the incredible lyric, “I lit a fire with the love you left behind,” and the fact that Grace Potter can’t look at the stars anymore because they remind her of someone who now brings her pain is an amazing personal revelation—and a great start to a song!
3) “Maybe I’ll Fly”—Barbara Lynn Doran plateau’s for another week……………..
4) “My Bet’s I’m a Fool”—My “bet’s” Jessica Dayle’s other song has unfortunately peaked……..
5) “The Leaves Are Changing”—Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys play some really nice folk/bluegrass. The songs are usually upbeat like the title of their second album, “Release Your Shrouds.” If autumn could ever sound upbeat and happy along the lines of Jessica Dayle’s “Summertime,” this song would be a perfect example—even as she sings about a “co-wo-wo-wold winter!”
6) “Copperleaf”—Dana Falconberry explores the Michigan landscape on her new CD, “Leelanau,” which is a separate peninsula in the Lower Peninsula west of Traverse City. She almost makes losing summer as the leaves change sound like fun!
7) “Sweet Cider”—Gathering Time, a singing folk trio, have put together a nice happy paean to apple cider! (Could there be an unhappy one?) Find it at gatheringtimetrio.com or iTunes!
8) “She’s So Mean”—“She’s so mean” she’s getting Matchbox 20 kicked off this list. I think this is the best thing they’ve done since “Unwell!”
9) “Time Is Love”—Josh Turner is ending his run……….
10) “After School”—A wistful “angsty” song from 1957(?!!!) by Randy Starr, a male singer who later wrote songs for Elvis Presley, scored a minor hit with this little song about a boy anxiously waiting for a girl after school who wonders if he’s being played for doing it. A hefty dose of whistling and a few echo drenched handclaps draw the listener’s attention away from the fact that this might be a sad song…but we never find out. I really like this haunting melody! 5) “50 Ways to Say Goodbye”—Yeah, Train is finally starting to lose interest to me………..
6) “That’s Why I Pray”—I really wish I knew how sincere Big & Rich are about their song, because I think it’s really good, but they have based their careers on being partiers and buffoons………
7) “One More Night”—It might be “one more week” for Adam Levine & Maroon 5…………..
8) “Everybody Talks”—I have to admit that I didn’t think I would ever put Neon Trees’ video on my faves list. It was kind of creepy while the song sounds happy. But I also knew that I would have a different opinion if it were out around Halloween—especially since it was a homage to campy sci-fi monster movies. I just didn’t think it would hang around long enough to make it to October. Well it did, and naturally, took the top spot on VH1 this week. Being used in a major commercial helped it along as it took many months to climb up the list. Way to stick it out, Neon Trees!
9) “Guess Who’s Knockin’”—Ryan Bingham did a blistering performance of this blues song centered around an incredible guitar riff on Jay Leno’s show! My monitor is still smoking!
10) “Some Nights”—fun. makes it through another week…………….. QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

2) “Blown Away”—Carrie Underwood continues to climb the charts and looks like she’s going to anchor down for awhile and not get “blown away”……
3) “Cowboys and Angels”—Ironically, many cowboys have left this world and ended up as angels………………….
4) “Too Close”—Alex Clare moved into the top ten on VH1. I guess Newton’s Third Law of Motion, “To every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction: or the forces of two bodies on each other are always equal and are directed in opposite directions,” is in effect on my “Q” Bombs list and VH1’s. The Lumineers move down one slot, but Alex Clare moves up one spot to take it’s place. Gee, couldn’t they both have gone down…………………
5) “Ho Hey”—The Lumineers finally slipped a touch this week. Maybe the beginning of the end has started………………………
6) “Walk the Sun”—Anna Moon hits that exposed, raw nerve. The longer this video sticks around, the more pain it will inflict………….
7) “As Long As You Love Me”—Justin Bieber is still hanging around on VH1, but he’s not causing me much grief…………………
8) “Oh Love”—It looks like Green Day are getting ready to do the honorable thing and fall off…so I’ll leave them alone………………….
9) “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”—Taylor Swift hung around with her video too long and has now become a nuisance. Sorry, Taylor………………………
10) “Good Time”—Owl City’s video and song is far from a “good time” for me……

5) “Lover Please”—A snappy little instrumental from Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers from their “Back in Your Life” album! It’s a throwback to 60’s surf music and it rocks—but not too hard!
6) “Wonderful Summer”—Robin Ward put out a wistful end of summer ballad in the early 60’s that popped into my head this week, so I had to hunt it down!
7) “Stars”—That haunting melody from Grace Potter & The Nocturnals is getting into my head!
8) “She’s So Mean”—I think Rob Thomas and Matchbox 20 is getting close to the end of their run……………
9) “Time Is Love”—I think Josh Turner is running out of time on this one………………
10) “Pontoon”—Once more around the lake, please, for Little Big Town, and then the “pontoon” can be put up for the winter………… QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Little Big Town beat the odds and returns to the top of my faves list for a third time and for the ninth week! I had “Pontoon” at the top for the first time way back on June 10, 2012! I can’t believe that it’s still around to become #1 three and 1/2 months later! That could only mean one thing:There really aren’t that many good videos out there right now. Since some old favorites disappeared, I decided to give a little love to a few lesser videos that I have ignored. I’m not trying to be nice. It’s just the product that’s out there right now…………….

1) “Pontoon”—I am not proud to admit that I still watch Little Big Town’s video every time it comes on! Welcome back to the top!
2) “50 Ways to Say Goodbye”—I guess Train is really going to stick around for awhile. Right now, they haven’t overstayed their welcome!
3) “She’s So Mean”—But not mean enough to keep Matchbox 20 from moving up higher!
4) “One More Night”—Alright. I still like Adam Levine and Maroon 5’s video, but that awful nonsense line (“Ooo-woo-pooo-poo-poo-pooh”…ad infinitum), the second worst ever written—right behind “Moves Like Jagger’s,” nonsense line, is really getting to me now………..
5) “Lovin’ You Is Fun”—Not much movement for Easton Corbin, but things may change…………
6) “Stars”—I’m not sure if I’m really that sold on Grace Potter & The Nocturnal’s new video, but I liked the song the first time I heard it!
7) “That’s Why I Pray”—Big & Rich’s video keeps returning to the list because every time I see it, the song rings true and speaks to me!
8) “Time Is Love”—Josh Turner’s song is growing on me, but the video for it is a pedestrian one……………
9) “Some Nights”—A strange little Civil War-type reenactment from fun.. Apparently, these guys like to film fights (“We Are Young”) and do it in a big way………

“Q” Bombs, September 30, 2012

A “Q” Bomb, like an “H” bomb, will be my term for a music video that I consider to be subpar in music, video, or both. This will be a recurring weekly list that will focus on the worst videos that are currently on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus on solely on current or recent videos.
I hate to be so negative about music, but when an artist takes a “bad” song and then brings more attention to it by creating a “bad” video to support it, it will appear on this list. I honestly hope, and it could happen, that this list will be less than 10 items, but I have serious doubts that that possibility will happen. We are, after all, talking about an industry that uses art for huge profits. The companies can’t help themselves.
However, at this point, I will not do a 10 worst music list. I see absolutely no reason to waste time reemphasizing bad music. Once is enough.
