Here’s a section on submissions:

I am accepting entries for Philby consideration!

The album selections are made from a sliding four year pool of music.

The pool for 2022 is 2020-2023.

One of the reasons that I use a multiple year submission scale is that just getting music out to the world is sometimes difficult for an artist.

A lot of them are not really wired for self promotion.

Making music is totally different than drumming up interest in it, especially for independent musicians.

Yes, there are promoters that can help with that. And nothing against promoters because they have a role to play. But they cost money, and the artist already had to pay to record the music, and may not be prepared for the process of promoting it.

After looking at how some other independent awards are handled, I figured a four year window allows me enough time to serendipitously run across someone’s music.

I have told this story several times, but I try very hard to listen to everything that is submitted.

Although I work on my list, starting literally on January 1st, using a four year sliding window, I carry over some of what would qualify from the prior years.

So, if you’ve made some music dating back as far as 2019, I will accept that music for consideration.

If you have something older than 2019, send that, too, but identify the release date. I’m always looking for GREAT music.

For the Philbys, I’m looking for full albums.

However, if you only have a single, I’ll accept that, too. Don’t forget that I also have a Philby Hot Songs list, and more artists are releasing singles these days.

But please don’t send me an incomplete album if you have one.

So, please don’t edit for me.

I dislike that and I might not even check out the item. I don’t know why anyone would only send selected songs instead of their whole work of art for consideration.

Please don’t send me links to listen to music. That’s not how I listen to music.  And I probably won’t listen to it if you send me a link to stream it. Either send me the album to download or request my mailing address to send a physical copy.

Every year I say that if your item came out later than May, it may not end up on this year’s list. So it’s possible that submissions entered now may only be considered for 2021. (It sounds so good to think of 2020 being finished!)

However, this year will be totally different than other years. I have not received any where near the amount of releases that I normally do.

It might be an excellent year to send a submission.

I will accept any genre of music. I like a variety of styles, even on the same album!

So, please e-mail your mp3s, and please make sure it is an mp3 only, to phil@philmaq.com.

If you want a physical address or have other questions, please e-mail me at the same address. Because selections will be considered for more than a single year, there isn’t an expiration date at the present.

If you want someone who will actually listen to your music, I am that person.

If you want some recognition for working hard and baring your soul, that might be me, too. I can’t make any promises, but I will listen to your music.

If you are reading this and are not a musician but know someone who is, please forward this to them.

Good luck to all who participate!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, May 7, 2023

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my “Theme Attic Show,” Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, May 7, 2023

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The 2023 Spring New Music Showcase #1.90, Mother’s Day, and Jazz on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic,” 12PM-6PM EDT!!!

Even fours for a show is not enough time to fit in the themes that I’d like to do!
Therefore, this week’s 2023 Spring New Music Showcase will have to make room for a few songs about Mother’s Day (including plenty of new releases!), that don’t quite fit the new music criteria, so I have lowered the show title to #1.90 instead of 2. (Specifically, three songs.)
That’s ok, though because the rest of the show will be stuffed full with the normal eclectic variety of music on “Theme Arric” with Phil Maq from 12PM-4PM EDT, and then it changes to another two hours of Jazz from 4PM-6PM!!!
Slip in a Top 9 at 2:09 Countdown of this week’s Fave Albums and this should be one special show!
Here’s this week’s stats: 17 artist debuts, 20 new releases, 1 unreleased, 1 world premiere, 7 artists with SE Michigan Ties, 12 singles!
Not too shabby!
I will divide the tags into sections, but they will only be an estimate.
I can’t guarantee that everything will fit into those slots, but I will try very hard to stick to them!
But…they are NOT in chronological order.
There will be three sections for today’s show!
Songs by artists between 12PM-209 PM EDT should include Tom Chapin (Tom Chapin), Low Cut Connie, Texas, Deborah Wesloh, Chris Caffery, Sid Simons, The Nutmeg Horns, Chris Shiflett, Donna Frost (Donna Frost). Silas Hite, Composer (Silas Hite‘s new “Out West” album is third from the left in the banner!), Nico Padden, Shinyribs, Josie Bello, Wild Pink (They are playing at El Club Detroit on Thursday night!), Cosy Sheridan Music (Cosy Sheridan), Phil Ayoub, Elle PF, Scott Waters, Stuart Kabak, Ben Abraham, Sarah Cade Music, A.J. Fullerton, and more!!!
Songs by artists from 2:09 PM-4PM EDT should include, Tamar Berk, The Steve Taylor Three (Steve Taylor), Roger Ponder, Sarah Morris (Her new “Here’s to You” album cover is on the far left in the banner!) The Joedai Warriors (Joe Peters & Friends), Sarah McQuaid, Scott Baker Music (Scott Baker‘s new album cover for “Purpose” is second from the left in the banner!), Bobby Pennock, Tom Alter Music (Tom Alter is appearing tonight at Berkley Coffee & Oak Park Dry in Oak Park, Michigan!), Jeff Karoub (Jeff’s new album cover for “Between the Commas” is on the right in the banner!), Xposed 4Heads, Judith Hill, Ransom and the Subset (Their new album cover for “Perfect Crimes” is second from the right in the banner!). Lady Lark, DownTown Mystic Band (Their new album cover for “AmeriKarma” is third from the right in the banner!) (Robert Allen), Liz E. Brooks (Elizabeth Efroymson-Brooks), and many more!!!
The music changes to Jazz around 4PM and continues to 6PM EDT with Sundae + Mr. Goessl, Mary Lou Newmark, Billy Brandt Music, and many more!!!
So bring along a pen and some paper to jot down a few notes, get a friend to listen with, and come along for Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” from 12PM-6PM EDT with Phil Maq!!!

Very Late, But Not Never: New Year Music Goals!!!

New Year 2023 Stickers - Free birthday and party Stickers

It may be several months into a new year, but I’m finally getting around to posting some goals for the year.

That’s right.

On May 7th!

Although I say it often enough, anyone who really knows me knows that I’m not into time, man.

Never have, never will be, unless it is something that is mandatory and I can’t get out of it.

And it would seem pretty simple to trot out the usual musical goal that I have every year that I see no reason to change: 2 new artist debuts on every show!

I see many benefits of this goal since it forces me to continue to find new good music and not become complacent or lazy.

Sure, I could increase the number, but I have given reasons before as to why I don’t want to increase it.

The main reason is that I do some shows during the year that I can only legitimately feature two new ones.

Rest assured that I have been working and meeting all goals since the beginning of the year!

A new one that I have been working at is playing an average of two new songs designated as singles by promoters per show!

I am making this goal a weekly average, not specifically two singles per show, because I don’t want to be boxed in to having to choose only among songs by artists I have never played before, and they also have to be singles.

Another new goal that I started at the beginning of the year, is to keep a statistical running total of artist debuts, singles, new releases, and local artists.

I will post a blog about those stats sometime in the future.

Those are my station goals.

Now I will shift to my personal musical ones.

Actually, now that I think about it, one is a combination station and personal goal: To sing with as many performers as I can on the show.

So far so good!

I have had a lot of fun singing with Mike Ward: Psychosongs, Judy Banker, and Roger Ponder!

I’m not going to make it mandatory to appear, but I intend to ask everyone if they would like to do a song together!

Another goal is to have a song that I write and one that I perform on released out into the world.

Well, that’s already happened with “Faded Rose Prelude,” (written by me), and “Faded Rose” (sung by me) on the album “Beyond Collaboration” by Joedai Trobairitz  and Troubadours (Joe Peters and Friends) released at the beginning of the year!

I’m not sure if a new release will happen by the end of the year, but I will concentrate on creating new songs, unless an opportunity for something else finds its way to me.

I think that would also rule out my own new release, but I’ll include it as a stretch goal.

I would also like to have a song I record included in a new compilation or tribute release.

And finally, the reason that motivated me to post about my goals today: I would like to begin performing at live events.

That statement needs some clarification:

I have played many times over the years in various bands.

In most of those appearances, I played drums.

On some others, I played guitar.

But I have never performed as part of an Americana act.

However, the opportunity presents itself tonight, Sunday May 7th, at The Empty Chair show at Trinity House in Livonia.

Since my friend Terry Collins is co-hosting tonight, and since he also plays on “Faded Rose,” the odds are in my favor that it could happen, but it’s not guaranteed because there is a random selection process.

But we’re gonna be ready!

If I happen to be chosen to perform tonight, then my goal would be to perform as part of a Songwriters Show!

So, there they are!

I’m already off to a good start, and I will keep you posted!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Mexican Moonshine” by Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Here’s a link to have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”: https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

I have the perfect song for tonight’s twin event of Cinco de Mayo and a full moon: “Mexican Moonshine” by Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers!

Listening to their 2004 album release, “Americano,” I became an instant fan and strongly attached to both the band and the song, “Mexican Moonshine!”

It is one of my favorite songs for almost twenty years, and shows up fairly regularly on my show!

The song’s arrangement and shuffling rhythm provide a wonderful, party soundscape that works both as a background for those who like to gaze at our favorite celestial object, sip tequila, or both!

And Roger Clyne was smart enough to turn his song’s recognition into a profitable liquor!

The Peacemaker’s are a fun, party band that can deliver some Tex-Mex rock’n’roll!

On “Mexican Monnshine,” the mariachi horns, twangy guitar, and wicked cool rhythm section that maneuver through many breaks, combine to form a heady, musical concoction!

I singalong to it every time I hear it!

One of The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded is “Mexican Moonshine” by Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers!!!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, April 30, 2023

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my show on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

Many Events to Celebrate on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic,” 12PM-6PM EDT!!!

As if this annual show wasn’t already difficult to plot out with so many events, even more things are happening to make it more difficult and out of control for this week!
Here’s some of the themes: May the 4th, Kentucky Derby, Birthdays, Artists in town, Full Moon, Lunar eclipse, a Coronation, Cinco de Mayo…and maybe more!!!
And then I also throw in a Top 9 at 2:09 of this week’s Fave albums, and then go on for another two hours after my show with some Afternoon Jazz until 6PM!
