Phil’s Faves: Albums, April 23, 2023

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my “Theme Attic Show,” Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, April 23, 2023

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Philbys Return This Wednesday; Unofficial Philby Hot 100 Songs of 2022 Countdown #1!!!

The Philby Award

After a four week hiatus, the Philbys return to Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” from 12PM-4PM EDT!!!

Check out the show update when it gets posted for more detailed information!)

Following a pattern that I established last year, I have decided to give priority to themes over the Philby segments, and then work them in so they have their own special random show.

That feels best to me since I hate to miss out on a theme.

And although we are far into this year, I have yet to post an unofficial update, and I need to catch up.

The list updates will also be in reverse order so that those closer to #100 will get more  attention, too!

I would also like to state that unless a song has appeared on a weekly Faves list, it will NOT show up on the final songs list.

I will also provide submission info at the end of each one of these updates!

Here is the first Unofficial Philby Counrdown List!:

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

100.Struck By Lightning—The Chats (Single)

99.Maybe Someday—Pkew Pkew Pkew (Single)

98.Big Man on the TV—King Ropes (Way Out West)

97.Weekends—Clifford/Wright (For All the Money in the World)

96.Happy Medium—Katie Pederson (The Landing)

95.Jazz for All Occasions—The Doug MacDonald Quartet (Organisms)

94.Tightrope—Vandenberg’s MoonKings (MKII)

93.You Make Home—Upstairs Party (Upstairs Party)

92.Don’t You Know I Know—New Chums (Shruggin’ Off the Feelings)

91.Mine Mine Mine—The Rosebuds (Sand and Silence)

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Here’s a section on submissions:

I am accepting entries for Philby consideration!

The album selections are made from a sliding four year pool of music.

The pool for 2022 is 2020-2023.

One of the reasons that I use a multiple year submission scale is that just getting music out to the world is sometimes difficult for an artist.

A lot of them are not really wired for self promotion.

Making music is totally different than drumming up interest in it, especially for independent musicians.

Yes, there are promoters that can help with that. And nothing against promoters because they have a role to play. But they cost money, and the artist already had to pay to record the music, and may not be prepared for the process of promoting it.

After looking at how some other independent awards are handled, I figured a four year window allows me enough time to serendipitously run across someone’s music.

I have told this story several times, but I try very hard to listen to everything that is submitted.

Although I work on my list, starting literally on January 1st, using a four year sliding window, I carry over some of what would qualify from the prior years.

So, if you’ve made some music dating back as far as 2019, I will accept that music for consideration.

If you have something older than 2019, send that, too, but identify the release date. I’m always looking for GREAT music.

For the Philbys, I’m looking for full albums.

However, if you only have a single, I’ll accept that, too. Don’t forget that I also have a Philby Hot Songs list, and more artists are releasing singles these days.

But please don’t send me an incomplete album if you have one.

So, please don’t edit for me.

I dislike that and I might not even check out the item. I don’t know why anyone would only send selected songs instead of their whole work of art for consideration.

Please don’t send me links to listen to music. That’s not how I listen to music.  And I probably won’t listen to it if you send me a link to stream it. Either send me the album to download or request my mailing address to send a physical copy.

Every year I say that if your item came out later than May, it may not end up on this year’s list. So it’s possible that submissions entered now may only be considered for 2021. (It sounds so good to think of 2020 being finished!)

However, this year will be totally different than other years. I have not received any where near the amount of releases that I normally do.

It might be an excellent year to send a submission.

I will accept any genre of music. I like a variety of styles, even on the same album!

So, please e-mail your mp3s, and please make sure it is an mp3 only, to phil@philmaq.com.

If you want a physical address or have other questions, please e-mail me at the same address. Because selections will be considered for more than a single year, there isn’t an expiration date at the present.

If you want someone who will actually listen to your music, I am that person.

If you want some recognition for working hard and baring your soul, that might be me, too. I can’t make any promises, but I will listen to your music.

If you are reading this and are not a musician but know someone who is, please forward this to them.

Good luck to all who participate!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “I Wanna Be Green” by Joanie Leeds!!!

I have a feature to recognize a slice of good music: The Most Awesomest Song of the Day!

Here’s a link to the complete list: https://philmaq.com/most-awesomest-songs/

I want to emphasize mostly, relatively newer music, just like on my weekly “Theme Attic” show, Wednesdays, from 12PM-4PM ET! (But it doesn’t have to be.)

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

If you’d like to know what I think are even better than the awesome songs, have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”:https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

But I can promise this: I will not force my selections. If something doesn’t hit me, I won’t post one.

Everything I do has always been about shining a spotlight on the artist and their music.

Now I will have the potential to shine 365 more spotlights if I want to!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

Since the first Earth Day in 1970, many songs (Many of them are great!) have been written on subjects  like the environment, climate change, the current state of the planet, etc…

I feel that Joanie Leeds’ “I Wanna Be Green” may be the best of all of them!

The melody is so contagious that only the most hardened listener wouldn’t sing along!

Ever since I first heard it, I have been hooked, and often sing it to myself as I take out the recyclables, or make an effort to change an old habit for the sake of chipping in to save our planet!

I LOVE this song, and I don’t say that very often!

The positive message in the lyrics appeals to people of all ages, and, in my opinion, is a modern day equivalent of “Whistle While You Work” because it makes any green project easier!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “I Wanna Be Green” by Joanie Leeds!!!

And…they are NOT in chronological order.

PhilMaq.com Celebrates Its 12th Anniversary with “Thank Yous, Tags, and Mentions!!!”

Last week, an important date passed that I want to recognize: I just had a twelfth Anniversary for philmaq.com!

Yes, that’s right!

Its been twelve years since, after many years of some immediate family members suggesting that I put my rambling, sometimes cohesive, thoughts into the world.

I remember staring at a blank digital page before I started typing my first digital words and thinking, “How do I put those thoughts into some kind of shape?”

Well, I toughed it out through that first post, and felt pretty good about it…until I felt I should do a second one!

Eventually, it became easier, as I developed a consistent pattern that emphasizes mostly new music, while respecting the legacy music that contributes to the artists making their new music.

I also like working a timeframe that is consistent, but is my own creation, so I am not trapped by the constraints of time.

Anyway, it works for me.

My continuing effort–the same it has pretty much been my whole life, is to keep bringing attention to music and artists that deserve attention, but are not getting it.

Before I became a DJ, I campaigned, in the same way, with my friends about my new musical “discoveries.”

Apparently, using my microphone and website to recognize artists and their works of art has been appreciated by many!

Recently, I told someone that I’m like the promoter you never hired!

Yeah, it’s a big self pat on the back for me, but I feel it’s somewhat accurate.

In the next sentence, though, I’m not saying I’m anything special.

However, I’m still the same music obsessed person I’ve always been!

As time continues to pass, I am happy to reflect upon the growing number of artists that have thanked me in their liner notes.

That is amazing to me, and I consider it to be the highest compliment that a musician can bestow upon me in my position as a DJ!

In fact, a couple of things happened in the past couple of weeks that triggered my memory in this area.

Sultans of String were awarded two Junos (the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys)!!

They have appeared twice live in the studio on my show as well as once for a phone interview!

The album cover for “Subcontinental Drift,” my Philby Album of the Year for 2016 is on the left in the banner!

So, it took awhile for the rest of the world to catch up, but Sultans of String acknowledged me early on!

Congratulations to them for their Juno award winning album, “Sanctuary!”

Another artist, Mike Ward: Psychosongs, has just released a new album, “Love Never Rests” (the cover is on the bottom on the right in the banner!), that gave me a shout out!

I am a huge liner notes reader, and it never gets old to stumble upon one’s name in the notes!

It’s an album from a singer/songwriter who continuously hones his craft and raises his own bar for each new release!

Here are some other artists that have mentioned me!:

I’ve been playing Joanie Leeds for almost as long as I’ve been a DJ!

Joanie won a Grammy in 2021 (announced by Dua Lipa!) for her all female album, “All the Ladies!”

I received my acknowledgment in her album, “Bandwagon!” (The cover of the album is second from the left in the banner!), which was released in 2013!

Joanie‘s song “Falling,” was my 2013 (Pre Philbys!) Best Song winner!

She has begun working on a follow up to “Ladies,” and I can’t wait to hear it!

At the end of 2021, Tom Curless released an album called “Person of Interest!”

Performing in several bands–all of them rockin’!, Tom is a multiple Philby Award winner and gave me a “Thank You!” in the liner notes!

It was unexpected and much appreciated!

And finally (for this moment), Nora Jane Struthers won my 2015 Album of the Year with her “Wake” album!

I got an acknowledgment in her 2017 release, “Champion!” (The album cover is in the upper left corner of the banner!)

She has a large catalog filled with excellent songs and albums!

Looking at this short, but supremely talented, list of artists, I am pleased for yet more reasons:

Sultans of String-World Music (Primarily Canada plus several other countries)
Joanie Leeds-Kindie Music (New York)
Mike Ward: Psychosongs-Folk Music (Michigan)
Tom Curless-Rock Music (Michigan)
Nora Jane Struthers-Americana (Nashville)

It is a list I’m very proud of!

There’s a variety of music as well as artists both local as well as from other countries!

It makes me happy just looking at it!

There’s major award winners!

And the door is still open for the other artists to receive the same!

I don’t normally “beat my own drum” when it comes to these wonderful thoughts that I’ve been lucky enough to be included in, but I see the musicians giving me a “Thank You,” as their own award to me!

Since I feel that I am in the trenches with the artists on their musical journey, I consider that mention to be a high honor!

I try to tag as many artists as I can for my shows, and it’s touching to receive it back!

If I have neglected others that have thanked me in a release, I blame it to a faulty memory.

Please remind me and I’ll do a follow up!

As I’ve said, each one is precious and meaningful to me, and I hope there is more in mine, and our, futures!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, April 9, 2023

There’s plenty of other musical things to browse!
