Phil’s Faves: Albums, September 25, 2022

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my “Theme Attic Show,” Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, September 25, 2022

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

Autumn and Anniversaries: Remembering Different Versions of “Theme Attic” and Autumn on Wednesday, 12PM-4PM EDT!!!

So, it’s out with Summer and in with Autumn!
Or Fall if you like that better!
It really doesn’t matter to me.
It’s just the time of the year when everything starts to die and the weather progressively gets colder.
Yeah, now I see why a large percentage of my friends LOVE this time of the year!
Er, not really.
Regardless, Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” and host Phil Maq will have some seasonal fun playing songs about September and the fresh new season–before it wears out its welcome, from 12PM-4PM EDT!!!
I also intend to remember a couple of shows I don’t do anymore: “Prime Time Theme Attic” which was on Monday nights from 8-10PM that came to an abrupt end, like everything else did with the pandemic, after 228 shows!
This is the 7th Anniversary!
And I also want to recall “MId Day Theme Attic,” which was a show that I started on October 4, 2017, for 20 shows!
This will mark it’s 5th anniversary!
That’s right! 3 shows a week!
It was fun at the time.
I thought it would be fun to throw some “arms” around those long gone shows! “Arms” will be another subject as well as “September!”
There will also be a Top 9 at 2:09 of this week’s Fave Songs!
It will be a mixture of mostly new takes on the new season with some classic songs to recall some memories!
Numbers are fairly impressive, too!: 14 artist debuts, 3 new releases, 10 songs by artists with Southeast Michigan ties!!!
I will divide the tags into sections, but they will only be an estimate. I can’t guarantee that everything will fit into those slots, but I will try very hard to stick to them! They are NOT in chronological order.
Songs by artists between 12PM-2:09PM EDT should include new Duncan Sheik (His album cover for “Claptrap” is second from the left in the banner!), Annie & Rod Capps (Annie Capps will have a solo album release show for “How Can I Say This?” on Saturday at The Ark – Ann Arbor!), Lindenthoburnmusic (Linden will be opening for Annie Capps at that same Ark show!), Ariane Lydon, Mick Hayes Music, WENTUS BLUES BAND, Miranda Lee Richards (Her album cover for “Existential Beast” is second from the right in the banner!), Thunderwüde, Karl Stoll and The Danger Zone, Stoll Vaughan, Jack Hardy, Lindsay Lou and The Flatbellys, Dave Karchner, Iron & Wine, The Rocketz, Billy Burnette (Official), and many more!!!
Songs by artists from 2:09PM-4PM EDT should include Jc & The Disciples, Your Gracious Host (Tom Curless), Bill Price (His album cover for “I Can’t Stop Looking at the Sky” is in the banner on the right!), Sultans of String, Miss Sophie Lee, Shawn Adam Williams Official, Nell & Jim Band, brand new The Flatliners (Their album “New Ruin” is in the upper left corner of the banner!), Kate Hinote Music, Sarah Morris, Jimmy Carpenter, Joanie Leeds, brand new Rachel Beausoleil and Evandro Gracelli (Their album cover for “Sol de Capital” is in the center of the banner!), Sue Horowitz and Jillian Matundan Music (Hudson Harding Music), Chalino Sanchez with Los Amables del Norte (Their album cover for “Alma Enamorado” is in the lower left corner of the banner!), Bill Edwards (Edwardsongs), Jimmy Carpenter, The Volebeats Detroit, Turkuaz, Julie Gold, Jill Suttie, Susan Cowsill and more!!!
So grab a pumpkin spicy something, get a friend or two to listen or share with, and come along for the ride on this Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” from 12PM-4PM EDT with Phil Maq!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Guacamole” by Texas Tornados!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Here’s a link to have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”: https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

How about a bonus song by a band that I refer to as Mexicos’ Beatles!

I’m talking about Los Texas Tornados otherwise known as Freddie Fender, Flaco Jimenez, Augie Meyers, and Doug Sahm!

They put out a zippy little tune on their “Hangin’ By a Thread” album!

We should all go make some “Guacamole” today!

It’s good for you!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my show on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

The 2022 Summer New Music Showcase #3 on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic,” 12PM-4PM EDT!!!

The days of Summer are quickly disappearing.
That means I better fit the 2022 Summer New Music Showcase #3 in on this Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” with host Phil Maq from 12PM-4PM EDT!!!
The show is wall to wall new music!: Approximately 3 plus hours of music and artist debuts as well as a Top 9 at 2:09 with album cuts I’ve never played before as part of the countdown!
The music is of a wide variety from folk to metal to country and blues and many styles in between!
You know. A typical Theme Attic show!
And here’s some fairly large numbers: 28 Artist Debuts, 29 new releases, 2 unreleased, and 11 artists with SouthEast Michigan ties!!!
I will divide the tags into sections, but they will only be an estimate. I can’t guarantee that everything will fit into those slots, but I will try very hard to stick to them!
Songs by artists between 12PM-2:09PM EDT should include brand new Jason Didner Music, brand new The WAEVE, brand new Dystopica, brand new The Natural Lines, brand new The Great Get Gone with Lois Mahalia, brand new Native Sun, brand new Cutter Elliott Music, brand new Sofia Talvik, brand new Michael Simmons, brand new Dearly Beloved, brand new Lacrimas Profundere, brand new Cole Anyway, brand new KaelAlden, Mick Kolassa – Music with Erica Brown, brand new Love Tractor, brand new Christine Sweeney, brand new The Lagoons, brand new Trent Agecoutay, brand new Sugar Lime Blue, brand new Adam Newman, brand new Elliot Szabo, brand new Todd Michael Bradt, and more!!!
Songs by artists from 2:09PM-4PM EDT should include Jon Shain, Sultans of String, Roger Ponder (His new release “September Songs of 2021” is on the right in the banner!), Ben Levin Piano, unreleased Voxanna, who are playing Berkley Coffee this Friday!), brand new unreleased (for 2 more days!) Crossword Smiles (Their album cover for “Pressed and Ironed” is second from the right!), The Armoires (Big Stir Records), Gerard Smith, George Stephen Kelly, brand new Laura Rain and The Caesars (Their album cover for “Rise Again” is in the upper left corner of the banner! They are playing LIVE Ann Arbor this Friday!), Modern English, Dave Caruso Music (His album cover for “Radiophonic Supersonc” is third from the right in the banner!), The Legal Matters, The Empty Pockets, brand new Marci, Mary Ann Kirt Music Page (Her New album cover “Transitions de Bien” is second from the left in the banner! Her album Release show is this Saturday at YpsiAlehouse!), brand new Joe Marcinek Band, Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin, Patty PerShayla & The Mayhaps (Their album cover for “Cheap Diction” is in the lower left corner of the banner!), The McnaMarr Project, and maybe more!!!
So grab some paper and a pen to take notes with so you don’t forget the groovy music, get a friend or two to listen or share with, and come along for the ride on this Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” from 12PM-6PM EDT with Phil Maq!
