Phil’s Faves: Albums, October 31, 2021

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my “Theme Attic Show,” Wednesdays 1PM-4PM ET on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, October 31, 2021

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 1PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

It’s a 6th Prime Time Anniversary on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic,” 1PM-6PM EDT!!!

I used to do a Monday night show, too, called, ahem, “Prime Time Theme Attic.”
Even though it disappeared a couple of years ago, I like to remember it around its anniversary.
Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” with Phil Maq will be similar in spirit: It will be supersized, from 1PM-6PM EDT! The last two hours (4-6), will be mostly Jazz as I fill in for Mr. Jags this week for “Afternoon Jazz!”
Some big things will be included for the 1PM-4PM EDT section: My first interview in almost two years!!!
JC of Jc & The Disciples and Vern from Second Hand Mojo are putting on a show this Saturday, November 6th at The Old Miami in Detroit!
Jc & The Disciples‘ album, “Hammered,” was my Philby Album of the Year for 2019, and they will be playing several songs from it this weekend! We set up an interview and discuss new musical horizons as well as their rockin’ Saturday night show!!!
Second Hand Mojo are new to “Theme Attic,” but they will become familiar to listeners going forward!
Besides that, a new entry to my “Theme Attic Hall of Fame”– Pink Floyd, will be highlighted!
And a Top 9 at 2:09 album Countdown adds to the festivities!
Some post Halloween seasonal songs will add some additional “color” to the show!
There will be tunes from at least 12 Southeast Michigan artists over the complete show!!!
Pack a snack, invite a friend to listen, and come along for the ride Wednesday from 1PM-4PM EDT with Phil Maq!
Tune in to 89.3 WHFR.FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area, ask Alexa or Siri to find the station for you, download the WHFR app, or use this special primetimejcandvern link : https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/ to stream it!!!
Feel free to share and spread the fun!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “The Creature From the Tub” by Andrew Gold!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 1PM-4PM ET.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Here’s a link to have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”: https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

Ooooooooo!

This one is really scary—especially if you’re a little kid!!!!

It’s bad enough that you have to take a bath when you’re young, but all of the dirty water might cause an apparition to appear: THE CREATURE FROM THE TUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was the mid 1990’s and Andrew Gold, [Hall of Fame], had young children. He took a look around the Halloween musical landscape and didn’t like what he saw—or heard. Outside of a couple of Rhino Records collections, or the CDs that rhyme with “Drew’s,” there really wasn’t much to choose from. There was the old tried and true, and either boring, done to “death,” or just plain awful choices. So he did what any father who’s a musician that noticed there was a hole in the musical spectrum would do: He decided he’d make his own family fun music.

Not only did he put together 10 solid songs on one CD, “Halloween Howls,” but he also made one of the best Halloween albums of all time!

To me, the best song on the album is “The Creature from the Tub!”

While Andrew sings the lyrics, he does an excellent job describing the bathtub textures and scene. To authenticate the experience, you get to listen in on the mother and son talk about it. The music is a staccato metronome type of beat to simulate dripping water. The musical interludes have nice little synthesizer fills.

And the lyrics are ultra cute.

Andrew sings the song from the perspective of the boy and gets to describe the tub water as getting “slimy” “icky,” and “sticky” and hopes the monster “doesn’t lick me.” He even tells his “mommy, it’s not funny.” It is possibly the cutest and most creative song about a monster you may ever hear!

I swear (Of course I do.), this song always makes me laugh. Not because it’s so good. But because it’s so baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad! It’s the only Halloween song I can think of where one of the monster’s actually has an offspring.

Allan Sherman was a comedian, who peaked in the 60’s. He made a series of silly comedy albums that usually included song parodies. Sherman was best known for a brilliant musical letter home from camp known as “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah.” He was the “Weird Al” Yankovic of his time—but he really couldn’t sing. He was just funny.

Anyway, back to the song. It starts with something falling over. Music stands? Sticks?
Hardened nuclear waste? I don’t know. It’s like an abstract, avant garde beginning, giving the song way more credibility and class. When I listen to it, especially, if it’s something I’ve edited, I skip this part. It just delays the “good” parts of the song.

Doing a terribly bad imitation of Dracula, the chorus consists of him shouting “BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD”

The verses are pure, stupid genius where Allan rhymes long lines that end with the likes of “dental floss” and “Red Cross.” His dad actually is warning people to stay away from him because he needs “BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!” What a good thing for a father who is  disappointed in his son to do!

The music is cool lounge Jazz with purposely placed wrong piano notes, muted drums, and nicely accented cymbals. Towards the end, there is even some cowbell … and woodblock! The total effect is a dark brooding song with silly words constructed to keep the listener off balance. There’s even a “ratchet” sound throughout to make the song even more irritating.

But the ultimate irritation is when I play this tune around other people—for them, not for me.

I’m usually too busy laughing!

It is a relatively unknown Halloween classic!

I really didn’t remember hearing this Halloween song as part of “The Blob” movie. I stumbled upon it as part of a Rhino Records collection. After listening to it for several years, I became aware of the song’s musical “royal lineage!”

“The Blob Theme Song” is a mostly instrumental one with a pretty awesome saxophone solo—and I am not even a big sax fan! I usually only like it when it’s right, and it’s right in a big way on this song!

It starts out with a nice acoustic guitar riff that pops up again later in the song. Then the sax and the rest of the band falls in, including a group of male singers who get to sing about such exciting things as a “splotch” and a “blotch.” The song has a kind of “Tequila” by The Champs feel to it, with an occasional break to tell you to “Beware of the Blob!”

The song also includes “pops” done before every chorus. The type of pop I’m describing is the kind where you put your finger in your mouth and pull it out to make that noise.

Many years ago, I saw Burt Bacharach [Hall of Fame] in concert, and he took great pleasure in making that sound—and he should have because he and Mack David (not Hal David) wrote the song! It was his first hit!

Hard to believe, huh! The guy who gave us great romantic songs like “(They Long to Be) Close To You” and such huge anthems as “What the World Needs Now” started out writing the ending credit song for “The Blob” (the one with Steve McQueen)! No one could have imagined Burt Bacharach would give the world such great music!

“The Blob Theme Song” usually makes me laugh if I haven’t heard it in a while, and it certainly wouldn’t be Halloween to me without it!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “They Don’t Scare Me!” by Mickey Mouse and Goofy!!!

I have a feature to recognize a slice of good music: The Most Awesomest Song of the Day!

Here’s a link to the complete list: https://philmaq.com/most-awesomest-songs/

I want to emphasize mostly, relatively newer music, just like on my weekly “Theme Attic” show, Wednesdays, from 1PM-4PM ET!

But I can promise this: I will not force my selections. If something doesn’t hit me, I won’t post one.

Everything I do has always been about shining a spotlight on the artist and their music.

Now I will have the potential to shine 365 more spotlights if I want to!

There are a lot of bad or repetitive children’s Halloween collections that are available (I won’t name names but most of them rhyme with “Drew’s”), so it would make perfect sense that Walt Disney Records has put out several good ones over the years.

My only complaint is that their releases are usually split equally between a handful of songs and sound effects.

I picked a song that I think is one of their best: “They Don’t Scare Me!”

It’s a duet between Mickey and a Dr. John sound alike. Mickey bravely stands up tall to all of the spooky things that his singing partner throws at him by chuckling that “They don’t scare me!” Behind all of this is a nice background of piano and backup singers done in a New Orleans swing style.

At the end, it is obvious that all of Mickey’s responses were actually a false front as the other singer drops out. And when he doesn’t respond, Mickey starts to sheepishly ask if that noise he’s hearing is Goofy. A spooky majestic organ

I think Mickey survived.)

Phil’s Faves: Albums, October 24, 2021

Phil’s Faves; Songs, October 24, 2021

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my show on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

A Spicy and Spooky Halloween Show on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic,” 1PM-4PM EDT!!!

Halloween looms closer, but there’s still several days to go.
Therefore, Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 1PM-4PM EDT will feature some “normal” eerie tunes as well as many “spiced” selections–those that were not written specifically for Halloween, but have that seasonal feeling!
And even though this won’t be an official Showcase show, nine artists I’ve never played before will be part of the musical festivities and no less than five of them are new releases!
At least seven artists will be from Southeast Michigan!!!
I’ll also include a weekly Top 9 at 2:09 Faves Song Countdown that will feature several worthy Halloween type entries!
Don’t worry. Most of the usual characters will materialize–in one form or another!
Songs by artists will include new Solomon King Music Inc., Deni Bonet, The Forty Nineteens, The Stranglers (Official) (The album cover for their new album “Dark Matters” is second from the right in the banner!), Sarah Borges, new Rage In My Eyes, Bob Leslie (His album cover for “In Praise of Crows” is in the banner on the right!), Mary Ann Kirt Music Page, Tom Curless & the 46%, Kenny Young and the Eggplants (Their album cover for “Plantastic Voyage” is in the banner on the left!), King Ropes, Lucrecia López Sanz, Robin Tucker (His album cover for “The Way Out” is second from the left in the banner!), Black Pistol Fire, Jc & The Disciples, new Royston Langdon, Joanna & the Jaywalkers (Two songs!!), Bobby Pennock, Joe Peters & Friends with Michael Longcor, new Makar (Twin Vision), Becki Digregorio, Jo Serrapere & the LaFawndas, ShwizZ, Jay Stott, The Wag, Groovie Ghoulies, Dead Winter Carpenters, Wild Ponies, Mick Clarke, Robin Bienemann, The Whiskey Charmers, Riders In The Sky, Xposed 4Heads, and many more!!!
Bring some candy, fresh garlic, someone else’s ears to listen with, and come along for the ride Wednesday from 1PM-4PM EDT with Phil Maq!
Tune in to 89.3 WHFR.FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area, ask Alexa or Siri to find the station for you, download the WHFR app, or use this special spoooooky link : https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/ to stream it!!!
