Phil’s Faves: Videos, November 27, 2011

This will be a personal weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best videos currently available on TV. I don’t, as a rule, go searching for old music videos, so that’s why it will focus mostly on current or recent videos. For this category, I am also going to include any live performances on talk or variety shows that I see during the week.

This week, Britney Spears makes it to the top and Taylor Swift drops to the second slot. Ah, isn’t that what videos are for…………………………………………..

1. Criminal–Britney Spears
2. Sparks Fly—Taylor Swift
3. Paradise–Coldplay
4. Red Solo Cup–Toby Keith
5. A Thousand Years–Christina Perri from “Breaking Dawn, Part One
6. The One That Got Away–Katy Perry
7. In Performance at the White House: The Motown Sound featuring Sheryl Crow, Seal, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Natasha Bedingfield, Gloriana, John Legend, Jordin Sparks, Ledisi, Nick Jonas, Jamie Foxx, Martha Reeves, and Greg Phillanganes
8. (It’s Not My) Baby—Jimmy Fallon as Justin Bieber from Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
9. Mr. Know It All–Kelly Clarkson on the American Music Awards
10. Why Can’t We “Unfriend”—War on Jimmy Kimmel Live

1) “Criminal”—I think this one is a “bear song” and the only thing moving it up is the video. I really hate it when they show a shortened version because I enjoy seeing Britney kick her boyfriend in the “nads” after he slaps her! I would prefer not seeing the slap ever, against any woman, but the kick makes me laugh every time!
2) “Sparks Fly”—What can I say about this one that I haven’t already said? I like it! OK?
3) “Paradise”—I like the impeccable timing of the giraffe in the video!
4) “Red Solo Cup”“Red Solo Cup/You’re not just a cup/You’re my…friend!”
5) “A Thousand Years”—Still only a countdown contender on VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown. I’m tired of waiting for everyone to catch on—if they ever will. I’m moving this one up because I like it a lot!
6) “The One That Got Away”—It seems a drag that the guy loses his life after Katy throws paint on his painting after he rejects her input. A steep price to pay, but a good video anyway!
7) “In Performance at the White House: The Motown Sound—I thought this show was going to be passable karaoke versions of Motown hits and boy was I surprised! This isn’t new and I happened to stumble upon it when I couldn’t sleep at 5AM. I have seen it three times now and I would watch it again!
8) “(It’s Not My) Baby”Jimmy Fallon’s impressions are sometimes a hit or miss proposition, but this one is incredibly funny! Fallon does a spot-on Justin Bieber— including dancing, as he parodies Bieber’s “Baby” song while denying that he’s the father from the paternity claim brought against him!
9) “Mr. Know It All”Kelly Clarkson boldly takes a jab at those who try to force her to do things “for the good of her career” by performing her hot new single as a swing variation of Benny Goodman’s “Swing, Swing, Swing!” I usually like Kelly and I even have more respect for her now!
10) “Why Can’t We ‘Unfriend?’”—Another hilarious spoof for Jimmy Kimmel’s National Unfriend Day,” this one performed by War! They do a nice job using their own “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” as the base song!
