Phil’s Faves: Albums, January 28, 2024

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my “Theme Attic Show,” Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

There’s plenty of other musical things to browse!

A list that you might find interesting is my list for “The Most Awesomest Songs of the Day”: https://philmaq.com/most-awesomest-songs/!

If you’d like to know what I think are even better than the awesome songs, have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”:https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

My somewhat unusual Hall of Fame can be explored here: https://philmaq.com/hall-of-fame/!

Lastly, but most importantly, is my Philby Awards link! A Philby is my annual award for brilliant musical achievement! https://philmaq.com/philbys/!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, January 28, 2024

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

Round Up Them Cowboys and Doggies for Wednesday’s “Theme Attic,” 12PM-4PM EST!!!

Some of the most beautiful and moving imagery in poetry and song centers on and is written by Cowboys!
Yes, they’re still around still doing what they always do!
So, once a year when there is a Cowboy poet gathering in Nevada, “Theme Attic,” heard on Wednesdays from 12PM-4PM EST with host Phil Maq, like to look at a wide variety on Cowboys and the West!
Now, I’m not saying anything that I play will be on the same level of those artists, but some of them might be pretty darn close!
And there will be some songs about groundhogs, woodchucks, and other assorted varmints!
Don’t worry your pretty little haid. There will also be a Top 9 at 2:09 of this week’s Fave Songs, a Buddy Holly tribute, and the New Theme Attic Hall of Fame Inductee, Enoch Light!
That ought to be enough to keep things jumpin’ enough for most folks!
14 artists with Southeast Michigan ties on today’s show!
I will divide the tags into sections, but they will only be an estimate
.
I can’t guarantee that everything will fit into those slots, but I will try very hard to stick to them!
However…they are NOT in sequential order. (I often make changes during the show!)
Songs by artists between 12PM-209 PM EST should include Goodnight Moonshine, Jane Penny, Open Book, Sue Radner Horowitz, Riders In The Sky (Their “Silver Jubilee” album cover is on the left in the banner!), Roger Ponder, Lizzie No (Their “Halfsies” album cover is second from the left in the banner!), Kathy Johnson, Erin Zindle (Erin is playing Trinity House Theatre in Livonia, Michigan this Saturday!), Enoch Light, John Latini – Roots & Blues Music, John Doe, Rod Johnson, Wolf B. Reuter, Tommy Stinson, The Stone Souls, Barker & Broski (Michael Snyder-Barker), George Stephen Kelly (George S Kelly), The Claudettes (Johnny Iguana), Joe Peters & Friends, and more!!!
Songs by artists from 2pm-4PM EST should include Kenny Young and the Eggplants (Kenny Young), Billy Truitt, Mike Ward: PsychoSongs (Mike Ward, Angela Malisani Ward), Jeff Scott Music (Jeff Scott), Jon Shain (Jon Shain), Crossword Smiles (Tom Curless, Chipper Saam) The Armoires (Big Stir Records), The Cribs, The Blueflowers (Kate Hinote), Linden Thoburn, Casey Lee Penn, Blockhouse Valley (Blockhouse Valley are playing The Hawk Black Box in Farmington Hills, Michigan this Saturday! Their Ep album cover is second from the right in the banner!), The Grain Hoppers (Their album cover for “Fireflies Trapped in a Jar” is just left of center in the banner!) SUSTO (Their album cover for “And I’m Fine Today” is just right of center in the banner!), and many more!!!
So, grab a bandana, get a pard to listen with, and come along for Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” from 12PM-4PM EST with Phil Maq!!!

If you’d like to know what I think are even better than awesome songs, have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”:https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

Winter Invades “Theme Attic” This Wednesday, 12PM-4PM EST!!!

Timing is everything, and I picked the winteriest weather in two years for Southeast Michigan to highlight music about it on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 12PM-4PM EST!!!
A Top 9 at 2:09 Countdown of this week’s Phil’s Faves Albums will give us a respite from the cold! (Or will it…………?)
There will also be a new Theme Attic Hall of Fame inductee this week: Fleetwood Mac!
Stats for this week’s show are ok, but have been obviously slowed down by the cold weather: 4 new artists, 3 new releases, 10 artists with Southeast Michigan ties, and 2 singles!
I will divide the tags into sections, but they will only be an estimate.
I can’t guarantee that everything will fit into those slots, but I will try very hard to stick to them!
However…they are NOT in sequential order. (I often make changes during the show!)
Songs by artists between 12PM-209 PM EST should include No More Blue Tomorrows (Their new album is in the banner!), Aaron Lee Tasjan, Sue Radner Horowitz, The Decemberists, Nanowar Of Steel with Madeleine Liljestam (Madeleine Liljestam) and ELEINE (Their album cover for “Dislike to False Metal” is in the banner!), Jaspar Lepak (Jaspar Lepak), The Rubinoos, Rob Kneisler (His album cover for “Lift Me Up” is in the banner!), Cary Morin (Cary Morin, Celeste Di Iorio Morin), The Regulators, and more!!!
Songs by artists from 2PM-4PM EST should include Kathy Johnson (Kathy’s “Small Town Girl” album cover is in the banner!), Joe Peters & Friends, Djangophonique, *Djangophonique are playing The Ark – Ann Arbor, Michigan on Friday, DIRK KROLL BAND (Dirk Kroll is playing DIRK KROLL BAND live! @ Trinity House Theatre in Livonia, Michigan this Saturday!), Jim Allchin, Billy Brandt and the Sugaree’s (Billy Brandt), Kathleen DeViewmusic, Donna Herula (Donna Herula), Carrie Westbay (Carrie Westbay), Tom Alter Music (Tom Alter), After Blue (Their “What Is Now, What Is Real” album cover is in the banner!)(Katie Williamson) John Finan (John Finan), Teenage Joans, Jon English (Jenny English), Uncle Bonsai, and more!!!
So, bundle up, hot beverages are allowed and recommended!), get a friend to listen with, and come along for Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” from 12PM-4PM EST with Phil Maq!!!
