Dave Roof, Rooftop Recording, and Sara Gibson Have Had a Sizable Influence on Phil’s Faves Song Lists For Several Weeks!!!

I am reposting this for several reasons.

The first one is that I originally misspelled “treacherous.” It was a typo and has since been corrected.

However, it made me think about the list a little more than I usually do, and I noticed some additional interesting things.

The obvious one is that Linden Thoburn‘s magnificent “Treacherous and Beautiful” remains this week’s #1 weekly Faves song! (Lindenthoburnmusic)

Another somewhat obvious point to those who are aware of it, is that half of the recordings were created at Rooftop Recording helmed by David Roof!

This wasn’t on purpose and is actually quite by accident.

In fact, over the years, there have been many weeks with multiple Rooftop Recording artists on the list.

This has been happening even before I was aware that David Roof ran a recording studio.

Currently, there have been five recordings on the list FOR THE PAST SIX WEEKS!

And one song dropped off and was replaced by another Rooftop Recording during that span!

David Roof does a great job of getting the most out of anyone recording at his studio!

Now, as special as that is, any followers of my list would notice that this isn’t the only studio, or group of artists with a connection, or even a label that has multiple lines on any given list.

Generally, this has always been the case in music where talented and like minded artists released consistently quality material!

I am only commenting because others were commenting, and I think a six week run with five recordings on a weekly Faves list is pretty remarkable!

Another thing that I would like to point out is the contribution that cellist Sara Gibson has contributed to three of the recordings!

When I do my show, I try to point out and name Sara Gibson because her name may be in the credits of a song, but it isn’t on the “mast head.”

I’m not really sure how many music fans are aware of her contributions on many Southeast Michigan recordings, but I try my best to give her the attention she deserves!

Like right now!

Sara’s mastery of her instrument makes Linden Thoburn’s “Treacherous and Beautiful” even more treacherous, beautiful, and soul tugging, Gary Browe’s “Memory in the Rain” more powerful and moody, and Mike Gentry’s “California” more thoughtful and wistful!

I honestly believe that Sara makes every song that she plays on automatically better!

The other two Rooftop Recordings on the list besides the three Sara Gibson contributions are “Living in the Right Place” by The Dirk Kroll Band, and “Failure Brings Smiles” by Bobby Pennock!

That’s all I have for the moment, but it’s quite a bit!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, January 29, 2023

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, “Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET!

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 2:09” segment of my show on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!
