Summer Is Fleeting: Time For Philby Submissions!!!

The Philby Award

Another season is ready to pass on to the next one.

And that means Philby season is getting closer!

I don’t know exactly what format or how they will be presented, but they will be presented!

I do know that my string of listening to 3,000 albums every year will sadly be coming to an end.

It will still be over 1,000, but I’m not sure how far over.

Since all normalcy is out of alignment, I’m thinking of opening the doors to more than just the sliding window of 2017-2020.

I’m thinking of doing it for next year, too!

There will be another update or two regarding that in a future post.

The next section describes how to get my attention!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

I am accepting entries for Philby consideration!

So, if you’ve made some music dating back as far as 2017, I will accept that music for consideration.

If you have something older than 2016, send that, too, but identify the release date. I’m always looking for GREAT music.

For the Philbys, I’m looking for full albums.

However, if you only have a single, I’ll accept that, too. Don’t forget that I also have a Philby Hot Songs list, and more artists are releasing singles these days.

But please don’t send me an incomplete album if you have a full one.

Please don’t edit for me.

I hate that and I might not even check out the item. I don’t know why anyone would only send selected songs instead of their whole work of art for consideration.

Please don’t send me links to listen to music. That’s not how I listen to music.  And I probably won’t listen to it if you send me a link to stream it. Either send me the album to download or request my mailing address to send a physical copy.

I usually say that if your item came out later than May, it may not end up on this year’s list.

This year will be totally different than other years. I have not received any where near the amount of releases that I normally do.

It might be an excellent year to send a submission.

I will accept any genre of music. I like a variety of styles, even on the same album!

So, please e-mail your mp3s, and please make sure it is an mp3 only, to phil@philmaq.com.

If you want a physical address or have other questions, please e-mail me at the same address. Because selections will be considered for more than a single year, there isn’t an expiration date at the present.

If you want someone who will actually listen to your music, I am that person.

If you want some recognition for working hard and baring your soul, that might be me, too. I can’t make any promises, but I will listen to your music.

If you are reading this and are not a musician but know someone who is, please forward this to them.

Good luck to all who participate!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “The Things That Matter” by Matthew French!!! (M French)

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

I would usually follow that by saying that I would eventually start a category for it, but then never get around to it.

Well, now I’m getting around to it!

My radio show, “Theme Attic,”  is on Wednesdays 12PM-4PM ET.

The show can be heard on WHFR 89.3 FM in the Dearborn-Detroit area of Michigan, or it can be streamed with this link: https://www.whfr.fm/streamer/!

The Greatest Songs will pretty much follow the pattern of The Most Awesomest Song of the Day.

I’ll select a song to celebrate and then give my thoughts about it. Nothing really brand new here that hasn’t been done before. But since I have a website, I can collect them and lay out what my own greatest songs are.

Here’s a link to have a look at “The Greatest Songs Ever Recorded”: https://philmaq.com/the-greatest-songs-ever-recorded/! Occasionally, an “awesome song” crosses over to become a “Greatest Song!”

Even though I always emphasize new music and artists, it’s always fun to take a short drive through the legendary artists, since they influenced those other artists!

But a song doesn’t have to be old or done by a legendary Theme Attic Hall of Fame member to be thus honored.

I can think of several songs that are only a few years old or less that I could identify as One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded.

This will be fun, and hopefully you will join me on my journey!

Somewhere in my “About Me” description, I grew up in a time where most of my friends truly believed that the world could be changed with music.

I still believe that way whether it may be naïve or not to think so!

Therefore, I have the perfect song for today by Philby Award winning artist, Matthew French (M French), from his Sweet Lovealbum!

I can’t say for sure, but I don’t think it was written as a Holiday song.

However, I am making it part of my Christmas playlists!

After all, many Christmas carols and songs are sung wanting peace on earth.

“The Things That Matter” is my inspiration for continuing to fly into the sun during incredulous times and advocate for peace!

The lyrics could have been written this morning.

And they are powerful!

These verses describe how we can’t even communicate on a level field as a society, when opinions are presented as facts, and some people believe them as such.

“These days it seems/
We’re living in a crazy dream/
Right ain’t right/
And wrong ain’t wrong.

Turn on the news/
Opinions matter more than truth!
I ain’t givin’ up on you/
You’re my brother, you’re my sister.”

Even though some people are lost in that minefield of deceptions, Matthew French (M French), is not giving up because somehow, some way, we have to get along on some level to make our world work. And underneath it all, we’re all connected to each other.

That’s the truly touching part!

The chorus tells us to stay the course. Things will change if we all try to do the right things! And regardless, he’s still going to do them himself because it’s the right thing to do!

“Keep on doing the things that matter/
Try and keep the peace.
Love each other.
Hold out your hand and open your heart.
Faith and hope carry each other

The world needs it now more than ever/
With a little love we can make it better.
Keep on doing the things that matter!”

I really like the line: “Faith and hope carry each other!”

The middle eight explains that he still has some uncertainty, but French feels that he can at least change what he can control:

“I don’t know where all of this ends/
But I know change starts with me!”

The melody is simple and catchy, the way important songs should be!

And Matthew‘s yearning vocals ring as true as his words!

I can’t listen to this song without crying! I want it so much to be true!

And it can be!

Change starts with me…and you if you’re willing!

Even though I didn’t care for this summer (Way too hot! Pandemic! Fires! Floods! Hurricanes!), I still hate to see it go. I’m not a fan of cold, snowy weather either!

I like it the way I like it, and that’s it!

Every year, when I wrapped up the last segment of my show, I always played, “Summer’s Almost Gone” by The Doors, from their “Waiting For the Sun” album–probably the sixth album I owned.

The song sounds like a lot of other Doors‘ songs. Like it was recorded after a hot night of partying and they decided to roll tape at four in the morning.

It’s very moody and atmospheric. Ray Manzarek’s piano sounds very sad as does Robbie Krieger’s slide guitar.

Even though the calendar and seasons are changing, I say it’s still summer until nature says it isn’t!

There’s still plenty of warm days before the weather really starts getting cold, but you don’t want to waste them.

Jim Morrison’s sorrowful vocal says it all–especially the last line!

On this annual “Talk Like a Pirate Day,” I want to reflect on that infamous scalawag Jaqbeard, the scourge of Zug Island and the Rouge River.

Maybe you’ve seen his ship off in the distance from I-75 while going over the river.

I’ve never seen it, but I’m OK with that because I’ve seen Jaqbeard close up and it’s an experience that sometimes gives me nightmares!

I also learned, over time, how to spell his name correctly.

Sometimes people talk about a “love-hate” relationship with someone.

My personal experience with Jaqbeard is more of a “scared-hate” relationship. (But don’t tell him that if you have an encounter with him and my name happens to come up!)

A few years ago, I was in the middle of doing my show when he and his men stormed the station and took over my show until it ended.

Since then, I’ve come to expect it, and I even decided to give in and just invite him on the show.

It was still a very uncomfortable experience.

I mean the dude always complains about the seats at the station and always wants to know which one’s the captain’s chair!

Regardless, I don’t know what he’s doing today, nor do I care.

But if you feel so inclined, you can let loose with a spirited, “Yaargh!” and maybe he’ll show up!

That’s brings us to today’s song.

“Seasick Sailor” by Philby Award winning artist, Coral Creek, from their “Free Dog” album is more of a tale of a pirate than a sailor.

The guy apparently had a PR rep!

The yarn has a lot of detail and always keeps things interesting!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

I had forgotten about this song: “Show Me a Brick Wall” by Lindsay Lou and The Flatbellys.

I was reminded of it when I caught Philby Award winners,  The Sweet Water Warblers, a super group of of women artists: May Erlewine, Racheal Davis, and Lindsay Lou!

They were at The Magic Bag in Ferndale, and I think it was the last show I experienced before the pandemic hit.

It absolutely was going to be one of the best shows, if not the best, I would see this year, in a very active music calendar of really great shows up to that point!

Well, The Warblers rolled the song out and it sounded so fresh and awesome with their perfect three part harmonies!

“Dang!” I said, both to myself and to no one in particular!

So the question that needs to be asked and answered is, “How can somebody ever forget about One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded?”

I can think of a couple of reasons.

One is that multiple Philby Award winners Lindsay Lou and The Flatbellys have plenty of great songs that I was into at that time!

I have been playing them on my show since I started. They were also the first group that I ever wanted on my show!

(They worked it out and it was a blast!)

The other reason, if I remember correctly, is that I think it was a bonus track on the band’s Ionia” album. It kinda got lost in the shuffle of music I listen to.

“Brick Wall” is a cover of a Carl Smith song.

Lindsay Lou’s vocal is as beautiful as she looks in the video!

Joshua Rilko, plays a sweet mandolin solo!

PJ George III anchors the song with his acoustic bass!

And Mark Lavengood (“Huggybear’) smacks it all in line on the cajon!

Harmonies and dynamics are tight!

And for a bluegrass/Americana band, they lay down a pretty funky groove! (Funkgrass?)

I LOVE this song (and video)!!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, September 13, 2020

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

(Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu)) on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded: “Bottomless Heart” by The Ragbirds!!!

For as long as I’ve been on the radio, and definitely for as long as I’ve been writing a blog, I will occasionally make a reference to a song being “One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!” (GSER)

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

I find it difficult to write about today’s song because I want to say so much!

Hailing from Southeast Michigan, multiple Philby Award winning artists, The Ragbirds, are one of the best live acts out there today!

Led by the always effervescent Erin Zindle, the band bends many genres into a variety of soundscapes!

From The Ragbirds’ 2018 Philby Album of the Year,  “The Threshold and The Hearth,” “Bottomless Heart” kicks off with opening drums and a shuffling Paul Simon inspired world beat, that sets the background for a night of sensuous adult fun!

It’s difficult to sit still!

Erin’s fiddle and expressive vocals guide “Bottomless Heart!”

The song centers on a couple whose relationship is getting boring, and the woman wants to spice things up.

The lyrics are wonderful and detailed!

She tells him:

“Take my pulse darling/
It’s been awhile since I’ve broken a sweat.”

“…I want you to take me out/
Light me up/
Look me over like you can’t get enough/
Charm the flames out of a young girl’s sparks!”

Whew! Those are some incendiary lyrics!

The second verse keeps things interesting with a martini simile:

“Open the window/
Put the needle on the vinyl
When you see things settling down/
Seems so boring, so final/
Now my poor heart’s getting dusty/
Like an old bottle of gin/
So stir me up like a martini/
Come on and drink me in!”

The middle eight has fun with some role playing:

“Let’s pretend that we are strangers/
And let’s meet/
Let’s get lost on the most familiar street/
Let’s get lost!”

When Erin sings the last “lost,” “Bottomless Heart” goes through a few measures that remind me of “A Day in the Life” by The Beatles, when Paul McCartney “went into a dream!”

After a complete break, the song kicks back into the chorus!

One more thing I really love about “Bottomless Heart,” is the ascending phrases of the chorus and the middle eight! They lift the heart and make the song feel lighter than air!

The harmonies with Erin’s brother T.J. Zindle, are tight and beautiful as sibling harmonies should be!

T.J. also does a great job on the guitar with the interplay of Erin’s fiddle!

And finally, listening to a woman who is in control of her sexuality, brings a special strength to “Bottomless Heart!”

I love, love, LOVE this song!

One of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded is “Bottomless Heart” by The Ragbirds!!!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, September 13, 2020

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, Prime Time Theme Attic,” currently on hiatus. (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET)

(Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu)

Today’s song is short…and fast!

“Fire” by Harts, an Australian artist, from an album called “Smoke Fire Hope Desire” is so fast, it’s finished in one minute and 41 seconds!

I think of it as an instrumental even though there is some talking on the track. However, the spoken part kinda lays beneath the frenetic music.

Sounding a lot like Prince on guitar, it’s best for the listener to just hop aboard and hang on for the ride!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Fire” by Harts!!!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day: “It Ain’t Paradise” by Joanie and Matt!!!

Here’s a link to the complete list: https://philmaq.com/most-awesomest-songs/

I want to emphasize mostly, relatively newer music, just like on my Monday night show, “Prime Time Theme Attic.” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu )

But I can promise this: I will not force my selections. If something doesn’t hit me, I won’t post one.

Everything I do has always been about shining a spotlight on the artist and their music.

Now I will have the potential to shine 365 more spotlights if I want to!

Please share the post to help spread the word!

Regardless of everything going on in the world that is way more important than my daily post, I will continue, nonetheless, in case someone is looking for a few minutes of respite.

OK, everyone.

Open your Bibles for today’s lesson and song, “It Ain’t Paradise” by Joanie and Matt, from their Philby Award winning, Sterlingalbum!

“Sterling” is full of Biblical songs that put a fresh spin on ancient stories!

The song centers on the relationship between Adam and Eve.

Joanie Leeds is at or near the top for total Philbys, and is a multi faceted artist with a warm, rich voice!

It’s a warm voice, that is, unless she’s playing a snarky, Eve with an attitude!

As the only couple on earth that can’t get along–and I mean only couple because there aren’t any others, Matthew Check is the perfect foil for his partner as Adam!

And Adam is not going to win this argument!

Eve tells him that,

“I labored eighteen hours and birthed us Abel and Cain!

What have you done today?”

And then she digs the knife in deeper with a condescending, “Adam!”

All he can respond with is a weak, “Whoo!”

There are a lot of good lines in “It Ain’t Paradise” and I usually laugh at something when I listen to it!

At the least, it should put a smile on your face!

If you can’t imagine what a toe tappin’  bluegrass song with fiddle, banjo, and tight harmonies sounds like, you have to give it a listen…or two!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “It Ain’t Paradise by Joanie and Matt!!!
