But I can promise this: I will not force my selections. If something doesn’t hit me, I won’t post one.

Everything I do has always been about shining a spotlight on the artist and their music.

Now I will have the potential to shine 365 more spotlights if I want to!

Please share the post to help spread the word!

Regardless of everything going on in the world that is way more important than my daily post, I will continue, nonetheless, in case someone is looking for a few minutes of respite.

Let’s stay local for another day.

Blueflowers, a multiple Philby Award winning artist including last year’s Circus on Firealbum, have been making their dark moody music for Detroit denizens for a number of years!

Dynamic lead singer, Kate Hinote, fronts the slow, plodding, hypnotic attack on “Look at Yourself.”

The atmospheric song has powerful dynamics that kick in strong on the chorus!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Look at Yourself” by Blueflowers!!!

Let’s keep it local and have some Friday Music Fun!

Put your dancin’ shoes on!

Crank up the cowbell!

Cue the back-up singers!

Prepare for those fun bell hits on the cymbal!

Get that groove started, and let’s get down to an R&B flavored song that might have filled the floor of The Cavern Club when The Beatles were on break!

Singer/Songwriter/Rocker Rod Johnson released a Philby Award winning album, When My Baby Comes Around,” that’s jammed full of songs ranging from personal introspective memories to just plain heat seekers like “No One’s Fool!”

It’s an album that works on many levels, and the listener can choose how deep they want to go on the varied types of songs!

But all I know is, you don’t want to be a fool by not dancing and singing to today’s selection!

It’s not going to be anywhere near as hot as yesterday, but I won’t mind another glass of lemonade.

Since I normally cover musical themes on my show, I can’t resist picking a complimentary song by local singer/songwriter Kathy Wieland to go with yesterday’s choice by Seth Bernard!

Kathy’s Philby Award winning album Momma Liked to Fish included a song called “Makin’ Lemonade,” which is her take on the cliche’ to turn lemons into lemonade!

Sounding happier than is humanly possible, Kathy sings along as she plays her uke and turns all of her problems into sweet juice!

Phil’s Faves: Albums, June 7, 2020

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

(Here’s the link for when that day comes: http://rdo.fm/r/4qntu)) on mostly alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

It’s going to be hot today, so let’s keep it local and have a nice, cool beverage–like lemonade!

Seth Bernard‘s catalog is full of adventurous songscapes that challenge the listener to pay attention!

He is another artist that does not talk down to his audience, and I’ve looked up subject matter to try to understand his music more!

Seth advocates getting involved in civic projects like clean water, and often uses his music to encourage the listener to engage, too!

A multiple Philby Award winner, he has released a series of “Eggtones” albums on various subjects, and I have chosen a song from Eggtones for Peace.”

“Honey in Your Heart (Lemonade)” turns a cliche into a tasty melodic song–after a psychedelic guitar noise intro!

When life gives you lemons/

You’ve got to make that lemonade!

Trying to keep our daily lives positive in an ever changing pandemic world, The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Honey in Your Heart (Lemonade)” by Seth Bernard!!!

Phil’s Faves: Songs, June 7, 2020

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio show, “Prime Time Theme Attic,” Prime Time Theme Attic.” (Monday nights 8PM-10PM ET when it returns.)

Yesterday’s selection, “Breathing” by Vandenberg’s MoonKings talked about having the power to hold on.

That choice made me think of “Just Keep Holding On” by Marcia Ball from “The Tattooed Lady and The Alligator Man.”

Marcia’s been sharing her musical gumbo (Come on! How can you NOT say that about her music!) for quite a few years, to all corners of the world!

I find the sincere vocal, mellow R&B piano groove, twangy guitar, soulful sax solo, and positive, hopeful lyrics to be the right elixir and musical friend for me, any time I feel that the world is against me!

I hope you will experience that, too!

QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ

How about a power ballad for today’s selection?

I have had this song on my player for years now!

This is a multiple Philby Award winning band that features guitarist Adrian Vandenberg of Whitesnake!

I even wrote a post about their 2014 self-titled album, Vandenberg’s MoonKingsbeing in my personal rotation years after I should have moved on.

It’s still on my player!

Vandenderg just released a new album, “2020,” so he continues to rock on!

However, I am choosing a track from “Vandenberg’s MoonKings.”

I have now listened to “Breathing” many times over the years, but it spoke to me today.

I’ve mentioned this before, but music works in magical ways!

I thought it was a good song, but never really heard it.

Today I did, and with everything going on in the world, including someone stopping George Floyd from breathing, the lyrics really hit home:

As long as you are breathing/
Flowing blood in your veins/
Never stop believing that you can do anything!

You’ve got power to keep holding on/
You’ve got strength/
You need to carry on/
Never stop believing!

A song about hope!

A song about hanging on–one of my favorite topics!

Each breath is precious!

As long as you’re still breathing, you’re in the game!

Great string arrangement!

Great vocals!

Powerful lyrics!

Dramatic delivery!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Breathing” by Vandenberg’s MoonKings!!!

It’s That Time of the Year: Spring and Philby Submissions!!!

The Philby Award

I’ve always planned to do a post about Philby submissions in the spring, if not sooner, for as long as I’ve been doing them.

This is the earliest I have ever done one!

If you’re unfamiliar with what I’m talking about, the Philbys are my annual personal recognition for brilliant musical achievement!

There are two lists: One for songs and one for albums.

The album selections are made from a sliding four year pool of records.

This year that pool is 2017-2020.

The song selections are usually from the same years, too, but I’m a little more open to almost anything, since over time, there have been plenty of older songs that have found new life years after they’ve been recorded, even ending up on a hit movie soundtrack.

Needless to say, this year is going to be unlike any year.

However, I have arrived at the realization that there will be issues every year no matter what I plan.

One of the reasons that I use a multiple year submission scale is that just getting music out to the world is sometimes difficult for an artist.

A lot of them are not really wired for self promotion.

Making music is totally different than drumming up interest in it, especially for independent musicians.

Yes, there are promoters that can help with that. And nothing against promoters because they have a role to play. But they cost money, and the artist already had to pay to record the music, and may not be prepared for the process of promoting it.

After looking at how some other independent awards are handled, I figured a four year window allows me enough time to serendipitously run across someone’s music.

I have told this story several times, but I try very hard to listen to everything that I get my hands on.

There’s about seven months left in the calendar year.

Although I work on my list starting literally on January 1st, with my four year sliding window, I carry over what would qualify from the prior years.

This year, the total number of albums that I might seriously consider from day 1 is the largest ever at six hundred!

Five months into the year, that number has swelled to seven hundred and forty which is close to where last year left off!

At the time, that was the largest number of albums I had ever considered.

There’s still seven months of the year left!

But let’s talk about this year, which is absolutely the weirdest year ever!

I haven’t even done a show for almost three months!

I haven’t any idea how this will affect either list.

However, I will come up with something that makes sense.

And as large as my working list is, I know I have room for more.

I can never have enough!

Therefore, I am accepting entries for Philby consideration!

So, if you’ve made some music dating back as far as 2017, I will accept that music for consideration.

If you have something older than 2016, send that, too, but identify the release date. I’m always looking for GREAT music.

For the Philbys, I’m looking for full albums.

However, if you only have a single, I’ll accept that, too. Don’t forget that I also have a Philby Hot Songs list, and more artists are releasing singles these days.

But please don’t send me an incomplete album if you have one.

So, please don’t edit for me.

I hate that and I might not even check out the item. I don’t know why anyone would only send selected songs instead of their whole work of art for consideration.

Please don’t send me links to listen to music. That’s not how I listen to music.  And I probably won’t listen to it if you send me a link to stream it. Either send me the album to download or request my mailing address to send a physical copy.

I usually say that if your item came out later than May, it may not end up on this year’s list.

This year will be totally different than other years. I have not received any where near the amount of releases that I normally do.

It might be an excellent year to send a submission.

I will accept any genre of music. I like a variety of styles, even on the same album!

So, please e-mail your mp3s, and please make sure it is an mp3 only, to phil@philmaq.com.

If you want a physical address or have other questions, please e-mail me at the same address. Because selections will be considered for more than a single year, there isn’t an expiration date at the present.

If you want someone who will actually listen to your music, I am that person.

If you want some recognition for working hard and baring your soul, that might be me, too. I can’t make any promises, but I will listen to your music.

If you are reading this and are not a musician but know someone who is, please forward this to them.

Good luck to all who participate!

When I was a kid, the normal Sunday morning routine consisted of waking up, going to Church, and then returning home for breakfast made by my mother.

For some reason, and I mention this specifically because pretty much every other morning she would never have music on, Ma would have a Renfro Valley show that featured gospel music on the radio.

Today’s selection is a song by singer/songwriter Linda Hicks from her “In the Corner” album, that reminds me of those mornings!

Linda occasionally performs as a member of Joe Peters and Friends–a conglomeration of many other talented musicians that play together on each other’s individual albums or songs.

Her crystal clear vocal, delivered with calm confidence over wonderful harmonies on such a beautiful song, makes it a great way to start off a Sunday!

Or any other day!

The Most Awesomest Song of the Day is “Early” by Linda Hicks!!!
