Phil’s Faves: Albums, January 21, 2018

Over time, my listening habits have changed and at the moment I usually listen to albums completely through. I haven’t done that in years, but it’s actually very rewarding—particularly when the album is good. Every album that will be on this list will fit that category.

Songs from the albums on this list forms the basis of my countdown list for the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show,” (Mondays, 8P-10P ET) on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Songs” lists!

There’s also a new “Top 9 at 3:09” on Wednesday afternoons on my “Mid Day Theme Attic Show” from 2p-4P ET that does the list that wasn’t featured on “Prime Time Theme Attic that week! (Whew!)

They may also turn up on my “Theme Attic Show,” (Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET)

Here’s a link:

Listen live: www.whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html

It’s another peak into my listening habits—which is a goal of mine. If you want to know where I’m heading or what I think about some new music, you will find it here.

I honestly don’t expect there to be much volatility on this list because these albums are what I have been basing many of the sets on my show.

Once again, there will be no boundaries. I will go wherever my musical muse takes me.

Phil’s Faves: Songs, January 21, 2018

This is a weekly Top Ten list of what I consider to be the best songs that I listened to the previous week. Most songs will be current, but there are no boundaries. I’ve already stated on this web site that I am obsessed with music. I am constantly hunting it down whether it’s online, on CD, from my personal collection, from a library (Yes, I think the library is a great source of music–especially for music that you aren’t sure about.), TV, or radio. Since most of these sources mostly emphasize new music, the odds are pretty good that most of the songs on this list will be new. But in my search, I don’t use any boundaries for the other sources. I am just looking for good music that I haven’t heard, or happened to forget about. Everyone, including myself, has forgotten way more great music than they can ever remember-even if they are also music fanatics.

Also, there will be no rules concerning songs on this list. A song can show up or drop off a number of times. This will be the most volatile of my lists. It all depends on how much music I am exposed to during the week and what I find interesting. On really obscure stuff, I will try to include the source, if I know it.

Most of the songs heard on this list have been played on my radio shows, “Theme Attic,” heard Wednesdays, 10A-12N ET, or “Prime Time Theme Attic,” heard Mondays, 8P-10P ET!

This list forms the basis of my countdown list on the “Top 9 at 9:09” segment of my “Prime Time Theme Attic Show” on alternating weeks, along with my “Phil’s Faves, Albums” lists!

Phil Ayoub and Kris Delmhorst in The Spotlight on “Mid Day Theme Attic,” Wednesday, 2PM-4PM ET!!!

Wednesday’s edition of “Mid Day Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 2PM-4PM ET, (right after “Afternoon Jazz” with Mr. Jags from Noon-2PM ET), will feature a couple of spotlight albums that I found roaming around the station’s archives. One of them, “Arrivals and Departures” by Phil Ayoub (album cover on left), has such a variety of musical styles that it’s no surprise why I like it! The second one features sharp songwriting by Kris Delmhorst called “Blood Test” (album pictured on right)!

The show will also have the first “Top 9 at 3:09” this year counting down this week’s “Phil’s Faves Songs!”

There will also be a musical tribute to three important women in my life that passed away in the past month. Songs by other artists will include The Rosebuds, AQUILA YOUNG, SPELLES, The Decemberists, Ben Rogers, DetroitSecrets, ShwizZ, Danny Schmidt, Birdsong At Morning, Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights, Jesse Xavier, Animal Hours, the liquid scene, and maybe more!!!

2018 “Theme Attic” Winter New Music Showcase, Pt. 3, Wednesday, 10A-12 Noon ET!!!

Another new music extravaganza takes place on Wednesday morning!

After spending more than a month on the Philbys, I like the Showcases to kickstart the year as it lays out a possible roadmap for the next few months, and maybe beyond. I still look to add new music on a weekly basis, but I like the challenge of finding so many good albums and artists in a concentrated way!

Here’s my Facebook post about the show:

It’s time for a two hour tuneful grand finale on Wednesday’s “Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 10A-12 Noon ET!!!

The final episode of the “2018 Winter New Music Showcase, Pt.3 will feature songs never played on any “theme Attic” show by The Bayonets (album pictured far left), Eric Gnezda – Songwriter and Speaker, Ringo Starr (album cover pictured in the middle), Abbey Hoffman, Shannon McNally Music, Amy Petty, Olivia Millerschin, Blondie, Andy T Band, The Flamin’ Groovies, The Underground Divas, The HardChargers, Trio Reenactment, Dave Caruso Music, Charley & Jesi, Nina & The Buffalo Riders, Sarah McQuaid, and a nice sampling of Earthwork Music artists like Gordon Keepers and Elisabeth Pixley-Fink, Gifts or Creatures, May Erlewine, Joe Reilly, Joshua Davis, Strawberry Heritage, and more!!!

2018 Winter New Music Showcase, Pt 2, on “Prime Time Theme Attic,” 8PM-10PM ET!!!

I continue to focus on new music and artists to start the new year on “Prime Time Theme Attic” with Phil Maq from 8PM-10PM ET!!! My 2018 Winter New Music Showcase, Pt. 2 will also include a return of “The Top 9 at 9:09” featuring the newest weekly “Phil’s Faves Albums” list!

These are usually the albums and artists that I concentrate on for the beginning of the year. However, I have been known to attach myself to something early, and then play it throughout the rest of the year! I guess for me, it’s a type of musical imprinting.

Songs by artists on the show will include The Dalton Correction, John Holk & the Sequins, The Mighty High & Dry, Muriel Anderson, The Rallies (album pictured, second from right), Miles Tackett Music , American Housewife, John Barron, Lime Cordiale, RB Stone, These Curious Thoughts (album pictured, second from left), Mel Graham Music, Neil Stephen Morris, Pearl Earl (album pictured, far left), Travis Peery Music, Norman Collins, Tim Bennett, Delta Moon, Luke Winslow-King, Tigers Jaw, John Latini and the Flying Latini Brothers, The Static Dial, Mick Clarke, and maybe more!!!

Philby Top 20 Best Albums of 2017 on “Theme Attic,” Wednesday Morning, 10AM-12 Noon ET!!!

In Philbyland, Wednesday morning is the Super Bowl!

Yes, it’s a little late for a year end list, but the scope of the yearly Philby list is wider than just one year. Not that I wouldn’t be interested in doing a year specific list. But at the moment, everyone that knows me knows that I am not into time.

I’m more interested that my choices are “good” rather than timely. And, in general, the time factor takes care of itself.

I work on my list every day of the year. But I don’t ever think of it as work.

I have tried to gather info at the end of a year to compile a list. Man, that’s really difficult! Working on it on a daily basis keeps it as a bite size project. I keep a continuous master list. Anytime I hear something that catches my ear, it goes on that list.

The next step is to get the album onto my player. I currently have 305 albums on it. I then eliminate the songs that I think I won’t play. There are several reasons why a song may be eliminated. It may have a lot of swearing. Cussing doesn’t automatically cause a song to be jettisoned. I don’t mind doing some editing, but that also means that I have to do extra work, and just like everyone else, it’s hard to find the time to do it.

The next step is to play a song from the album on one of my shows. This usually happens as an opener or a finale, but I try really hard to work the songs into my themes.

I won’t put an album on my list unless I have played at least one song from it on a show. Also, a song can’t be placed on one of my “faves” lists unless I have already played it on air. As silly as it seems, I feel that I need to hear a song on the radio to see what it really sounds like. That also gives the listeners the opportunity to give me feedback on a song or artist. That’s really important to me, too. I like to get a little echo chamber going on my selections.

Around Thanksgiving, I typically compile a smaller master list. Then comes the painstaking task of making sure I haven’t forgotten something I wanted to be considered. But every year, I make some mistake that puts me on the spot. That means I have to take something off the list to make room for the error.

Last year, I removed Nick Waterhouse for another album. This year, I forgot to make sure that Nick Waterhouse was included to make up for last year until a couple of days ago. So, I had to remove an album that I really wanted on this year’s list. Hopefully, I’ll remember it for next year’s list.

Also, the list is always fluid until I play it. In fact, I just did some tweaking a few hours ago. I hope I have provided some insight into how I do this. I will occasionally try to explain  some of my process.

Alright! Kickoff is at 10 AM! I hope you can join me!

Here’s my Facebook post:

OK. Let me start off by saying that the albums in the photo are in the Top 20, but they are not the Top 6. I don’t want to cause any confusion. Other than that little point, the big show is tomorrow!

“Theme Attic” with Phil Maq, Wednesday morning from 10A-12Noon ET, will have the Philby Top 20 Albums of 2017 Countdown!!!

Songs by artists will include Michael on Fire, The Accidentals, Edwardsongs (album pictured, bottom row, far right), Luke Winslow-King, The Hangabouts, Mark Jewett Music (album pictured, bottom row, far left), Alison Krauss album picture, top, far left), Greg Kihn, Nick Waterhouse, Wendy Webb (album pictured, top right), DownTown Mystic, American Housewife (album pictured on bottom, second from left), Olivia Millerschin, The Whiskey Charmers, Seth Bernard, Samantha Fish, Muriel Anderson, Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights, Windborne, Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers, and more!!!

Philby 100 Best Albums of 2017, Pt. 4, on Monday Night’s “Prime Time Theme Attic,” 8PM-10PM ET!!!

Another 20 gems will be revealed on Monday night’s “Prime Time Theme Attic” with Phil Maq, from 8PM-10PM ET!!!

Doing some calculations, I figure that in the past year, I have played approximately 3500 individual songs on my shows. Since I play old tracks with new ones, I’m guessing that I pulled songs off of at least 400 albums.

And since I try to pick artists that I want to revisit several times over, I’m calculating that I probably played, over the airwaves, about 200 fairly complete albums. It’s all part of the process to pick the Philbys!

After an opening track by David Crosby which references Martin Luther King, Jr., the countdown begins for albums 21-40 on Pt.4 of the Philby 100 Best Albums of 2017!

Songs by others will include The Garden of Soul, RB Stone, John Barron (album cover, second from left), Deni Bonet (see album cover, far left) , Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles (album cover, second from right), Mental Health Day, The Vegabonds, Thornetta Davis, Jo Serrapere & the LaFawndas, Alice Cooper, Matt Jones and The Reconstruction (album cover on far right), Eddie Martin, Ben Rogers, THE STEEPWATER BAND, Frank Bang and The Cook County Kings, Jim McCarty, Xposed 4Heads (album cover in the middle), Mimes On Rollercoasters, Danny Schmidt, Birdsong At Morning, and possibly more!!!

Tune in to 89.3 FM (89.3 WHFR.FM) in the Dearborn-Detroit area, Echo or Tune In Players, or with this special Philby, Pt..4, streaming link: http://whfr.fm/images/stream_audio.html Please share freely with your fans, friends, and families, but say something about yourself in the comments section when you repost it, so that everyone knows why your posting it!
